Marshall's doing just fine at the moment.

Here's the conference revenues for the big names in C-USA and SunBelt for the last year available.

Go back to 2014 and we're lapping everyone in both leagues.

Heck, we've pulled in more total conference distributions in the last 6 years than ECU - and they are in the "money-printing" AAC. We're almost punching even with Houston as well.

When the SunBelt can give us a $6 million annual distribution, then we'll talk...

I don’t think you understand the conference distribution system.

With this pandemic exposes the financial issues with the far-flung conference. They really make less money than the SBC with lousy football. SBC will not leave for a new conference because where will the money come from? Georgia State is not good in football. Both App State and Georgia Southern will stay where they can be top dogs. Where JMU goes? Delaware will follow them.

Now that I think about it CUSA did bring up Charlotte and ODU straight from FCS as precedence for a non-bottom tier conference (SBC was below at the time) to call up a program.

Conferences generally don't like to add a second program in the same state for the instate competition. Virginia already has ODU in CUSA and Liberty as an Indy. JMU is in a location that is tough to get to. MAC was willing to pair them with UMass since they had less options out east.

Half the problem is that CUSA has 2 schools in FL and SBC has 2 schools in Georgia instead of having them in the same conference.

The problem is not quite as bad in the west where CUSA has 4 TX and 1 LA school while SBC has 2 TX, 2 LA, 2 AR so while its overlap it isn't gaps which is more annoying.

RE: C-USA Split Rumor
Could the CAA potentially host a breakaway FBS contingent?

West - Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, Appalachian State
East - Delaware, James Madison, Marshall, Old Dominion, Charlotte

C-USA then invites Texas State:
West - UTEP, Texas State, UTSA, North Texas, Rice
East - Louisiana Tech, Southern Mississippi, UAB, FAU, FIU

That then leaves the Sun Belt with the following:
Louisiana, Louisiana-Monroe, Arkansas State, South Alabama, Troy, Coastal Carolina, Texas-Arlington (non-football), Little Rock (non-football)

That would then leave the following schools in search of new homes: Towson, Northeastern, Hofstra, Drexel, William & Mary, Elon, UNC-Wilmington, College of Charleston

Texas-Arlington and Little Rock join C-USA for all sports but football, while FAU and FIU transition to football only and park their other sports in the Atlantic Sun. The Sun Belt takes in UMass and UConn for short-term football deals while Kennesaw State and Missouri State transition to FBS; and then Elon, UNC-Wilmington, College of Charleston, and William & Mary as non-football members. Drexel and Towson join America East, which takes over FCS football from the CAA. Hofstra and Northeastern join the Northeast Conference.

A good idea but probably too complicated to get all the conferences to coordinate.

There are Lamar, Sam Houston State and SFA that wants or eyeing FBS. I could see FAU and FIU goes back to SBC.

RE: C-USA Split Rumor
Turning a G5 in to a G6 reduces the chance of getting a NY6 bowl, reduces exposure for the conference and splits up the CFP payoff.
Adding schools from FCS dilutes the payoff and dilutes the talent pool.

The type of realignment that might make sense would be a trade of Texas St., ULL, ULM, Arkansas St., UALR and UTA for Marshall, UNCC, ODU, FAU, FIU and WKU. Then both conferences would have 6 original schools for continuity and both would have 12 football members.

Which of those 3 Southland schools are eyeing FBS? There has been nothing in 10 years that suggests as much.

Its Davidst. He thinks every school wants to go FBS and is capable of doing so....

FAU and FIU rejoining might be problematic for the Sun Belt. This would be more likely for the Sun Belt:

West - Sam Houston, SFA, Lamar, Texas State, NM State
East - Arkansas State, ULM, Louisiana, Troy, USA

If the Florida twins come back, there's now room in C-USA. Texas State and Louisiana bolt, leaving the Sun Belt with this:

West - Sam Houston, SFA, Lamar, NM State, ULM
East - Arkansas State, Troy, USA, FAU, FIU

Or this:

West - Arkansas State, ULM, Troy, USA, Missouri State
East - FAU, FIU, Kennesaw State, EKU, ETSU

Even as far north as EKU is, it's nearly 100 miles closer to FIU than Arkansas State. It's even 10 miles closer than ULM. The last scenario also groups the teams by time zone.

It's very generous of the majority of CAA schools to abandon the CAA for lesser conferences for the sake of the current CUSA and SBC schools.

If you could peel off some A10 football schools? You might land the big name basketball schools as well which could actually bring the value of a tv contract up not just for football, men's basketball and baseball.

I can’t but think schools like the F*Us and other SBC pickups (UNT?) are in mind with the split. It becomes clearer that in the ensuing chaos of those years back when CUSA got sacked by the Big East/AAC and the MWC merger, there may be regrets now.

Like, I don’t find it surprising this talk emerges from both CUSA and CAA. Keeping in mind where CUSA and SBC picked up some membership, but, also remembering who advocated/sponsored the likes of Charlotte and ODU. This wasn’t the CUSA they thought they were getting. IIRC, Charlotte leaned on Tulane and ODU had ECU behind them?

Could also be that there’s word the AAC will backfill UConn, and it comes at CUSA’s expense, and what that means for CUSA and how those eastern schools feel?

Yeah, a conference where you pick out CUSA’s northeastern-most members, but also pick up some familiar CAAF faces? And not just the rumors of James Madison, but seeing maybe Georgia State? And, yeah, still can’t forget UMass. It’s partly why I can’t not think about Stony, either.

UMass
Stony Brook
Marshall
James Madison
ODU
Charlotte
Georgia State

I know you’re not at eight, but I don’t think it would be hard to get those additional spot(s) filled.

This is an interesting question.

A 10 team conference with UAB, WKU, MTSU, Charlotte, ODU would be attractive for basketball, especially in a smaller 8-10 team format where it was double round robin.

App State has a very good FB team and that is something ESPN would like to put on TV ala Boise St.

Marshall has great fans and should be included on that basis alone for a new conference. I sense there is some fear they may be left out and have to go back to the MAC but I doubt it.

I'd say the risk bullet is more of the P5 expanding with most of the AAC teams and creating a G4.

Then the powers that be on the next contract might say the G doesn't need more representation since most of its best schools have moved up to the P level.

If it goes the other way where pressure continues on the CFP through teams challenging for the Top 25 and even more schools move up the justification for greater access exists.

A basketball centric conference with some emphasis on football would be intriguing.

My set up for that would be a core of
Charlotte
ODU
WKU
MTSU
UAB
Ga State

with JMU, App, Marshall, and Ga Southern there for football and numbers

I would offer FIU and FAU football affiliate membership if they were interested
