State support for Louisiana schools has been low for a while and indications were the Louisiana bunch was looking for more support from those four Texas schools. Would you want to pay to keep your competition up with you?

Correct. That was part of it. The schools in Louisiana are struggling to enhance their budgets and are not having - for the most part - the enrollment growth that we are still seeing in Texas where student fees play a huge role in helping with the budget!

Northwestern St plays basketball in what looks like a WW2 hanger. Football stadium is mid size Texas high school equivalent. I think Southeastern La is improving their facilities but are still behind. UNO uses Lake Front Arena owned by New Orleans for games.

University of New Orleans owns Lakefront Arena. It is not a city facility, it is a facility owned and operated by the University that ideally would provide a lot of revenue back to the campus (and athletic department) but do not believe it has been able to operate at the same level since prior to Hurricane Katrina as a revenue generator for either party.

EWU is not dropping FB, nor are they dropping a division. Be serious.

As the noise from EWU fans (upon which the observation was based) subsided, I was ready to let this go. But we’re to the next problem... stuff keeps adding up such that the AD needs to say something, the President would be wise to give even the “dreaded vote of confidence.”

But no. There’s crickets.

The administration says they will make a decision in June. This seems awful late to make changes right away, so I guess I won’t bet on this. But their actions are what you do if you have a 5-year plan to eventually deliver bad news, not something that shores up a program in need of some work.

The President/AD need to make an announcement that nothing is going to change wrt to NCAA status? I'd expect noise if a demotion from D1 was actually something real. Yawn.

So if the four teams leave the Big 12, which probably means it’s death, what happens? What’s the fall out for the WAC and other mid-majors?

You do realize the article you are reading and linking to is from 2011?

Nope. Sorry. It was on my Twitter feed tonight so I assumed it was current. I did goggle and found several articles stating similar discussions.

Its easy to miss the date when the topic is essentially ongoing and still timely.

Big 12 breakup would definitely create ripples but I don't see it happening in the near future.

Since I expect the FBS playoff to expand in the next couple of years I don't see anything that would cause the Big 12 to break up.

Texas would have to make some major concessions with the Longhorn Network to make a move. Personally don't see them moving. Others maybe, but UT and OU are the two that other conferences would be focused on.

RE: WAC Expansion/FCS - for real (Official Discussion Thread)
Of more recent concern is the thought that the MWC might be down a couple (or three) programs in the not too distant future with Boise St., SDSU and CSU moving to the AAC. Not sure if it actually happens or not, but if there are 3 spots open in the MWC, do they backfill? I believe there are 12 football playing members so they wouldn't have to backfill but it would probably be prudent with at least one football member. My guess, if it is just one, it is UTEP. The question then becomes, what do they do with their Oly sports? With Hawaii being football only, losing those three teams would bring them to 8 Full members. That's kind of precarious. You add UTEP (who I would suppose would come with all sports), and you have 9. Again, you don't have to expand if you don't want to so it may not affect the WAC at all. If they choose to go further with their expansion, it could have an affect (NMSU, GCU, etc.).

Just some random musings, I suppose.

GO AGGIES!!!!

If the MWC loses 3 that puts them at 8 plus Hawaii football. I’m inclined to think, that for stability sake, they either pull in 1 full member or 3.

8 full members is just too tiny.

That is kind of my thought. One other thought, what if the TV deal were to suffer enough that some of the teams may be open to leaving the MWC? Either A) there would be even more spots open, or B) could some of the members be convinced to come to a conference that is on the way up (eg. WAC)?

In order to be big, you gotta think big. I obviously have no idea how any of this plays out, or what these other schools are really looking to do. I think some schools are starting to realize that chasing the P5 is fools gold. We need to find the happy medium and carve our own niche in the college sports landscape. The P5 are gone, there is no catching them and I think more and more schools are starting to fine that chasing scraps may not be worth it.

GO AGGIES!!!

Boise fans (who, when you look at it objectively, have had so much practice at this that they understand the most what prompts conference realignment) are mostly sure the AAC window has come and gone.

Something can change this, but I can also tell you that San Diego State won’t be a part of this in the current political climate.

This could be nothing at all, you are correct. At this point, I am pretty much in a wait and see attitude. In other words I’ll believe it when I see it. At this point, I have no idea how it would affect the WAC. I feel like we are getting a motivated group of schools together that can probably rise together. Not sure I, as a fan, would want to leave that behind for a collection of schools and administrations that look down their noses at others all the time.

As a fan, I would rather be with a group of schools that were working together. We’ve been with those in the MWC and have seen first hand that they really aren’t about working together so much as they are about stepping all over each other to chase “the dream”. I’m not against schools bettering their lot in life, I’m really not. I just hate seeing people stomp all over others on the way.

Understand that I am speaking for myself. If those schools were to really want to work together, it could be a great conference. I’m just not convinced that is the case. Of course, that is looking from the outside for the past decade too, so take that for what it’s worth.

But havent most of these upcoming WAC schools done just that to their old conference? i dont think you can preach virtue about not wanting to be with MWC schools because of past moves theyve made when the newcomer WAC schools are currently doing the same thing. I dont really see a difference and there's nothing wrong with that. When it all comes down to it each school is only their for themselves. Gotta do what you gotta do.

The Mountain West is a great conference btw. I dont really see themselves stepping over each other at this point. Maybe you could make a case for Boise but who could blame them? Why wouldnt they chase whatever bag they can get?

I dont really see a difference and there's nothing wrong with that. When it all comes down to it each school is only their for themselves. Gotta do what you gotta do.

The Mountain West is a great conference btw. I dont really see themselves stepping over each other at this point. Maybe you could make a case for Boise but who could blame them? Why wouldnt they chase whatever bag they can get?

Schools are only useful to one another, as long as they benefit one another.

GO AGGIES!!!!

You'd rather be in the WAC than the MWC? I think if this were to happen the MWC would invite yall despite UNM

Who's preaching? I'm just stating an opinion, which you are welcome to disagree with, that's fine. We have a history with UNR as well that isn't all that amicable. USU has always looked down their nose at NMSU as well. Then there is UNM. People have moved on since then, so things may have changed, I don't know.

I also understand and don't blame people for improving their lot in life. I do see your point in the new members, however I also don't see anyone coming in and trying to swing a big "stick". I see more about working together to raise the profile of the conference, or if they do leave, that they leave it better than they found it. The last few teams that left the WAC left it worse than they found it. That, I guess, is my issue.

GO AGGIES!!!!
