RE: WAC get's 10th member - for real (Official Discussion Thread)
I stumbled upon David Street's blog. Check out this article from 2012. It was written in the middle of the WAC collapse when it looked like the conference may dissolve. Among the many nuggets are Gonzaga joining the WAC along with VCU and Richmond. Keep in mind this is at the height of Shaka Smart and VCU making long tourney runs. He even has Georgetown listed!!!! This is pure gold...

The WAC will make it official on January 14, according to Pete Thamel.
It really is nice having reputable professionals expressing an interest and publicly sharing legitimate information about WAC. This is a far cry from the standard message board, conference realignment conspiracy theory drivel most of us who came over when this board started have been subjected to for years. While there is still PLENTY of nonsense out there, I am happy to own my skepticism and accept/admit being wrong on this one. Thanks for sharing, OWC.

Not surprised in the least. Again, this is someone a few posters think is a realignment guru. He will literally throw anything up and prays it sticks. A pathetic list.

You guys see WACHoopsDigest quote tweets Thamel and then says "A source with expansion knowledge pertaining to the WAC has confirmed that there will be an announcement on Jan. 14." Yeah we know that already Thamel told us. #GotScooped

Georgetown and Gonzaga were listed. That.. had to be a joke. He has schools from the east coast joining the WAC because of course schools are going to want to fly at least two time zones.
This is either a horribly executed joke, or David has lost all connection with our reality that he's hanging out with Rod Serling.

They also said sources noted that not everything Thamel says is accurate. I'm going to stick with the Tx4/SUU and not speculate on anything else.

It is good that the WAC registers on the radar still. Of course, a guy who hasnt commented on the subject until an announcement is imminent isn't predicting anything. In the meantime, sitting and waiting for something official doesn't give a message board much to talk about.

Maybe my problem is my preference for journalistic reporting over speculative predicting. I'm sure it is a fun exercise for some, but an exhausting waste of time for others. I guess it takes all types, right?

Agreed. But its great to see the interest in the WAC. We have one of more active boards on here. I'd be sad if no one wanted to talk about the WAC, even if some is speculation.

Can we assume if the press conference happens, it will be on the WAC Broadcast Network?

Well that's a good problem to have. I'll take either as long as it's known that the speculative predicting is purely speculative.

If its on here before an official announcement, its speculative...

How quickly could a merger between Corpus Christi & Kingsville happen? If they started the process on March 1, 2021, could those two schools merger by Fall 2022? If they combined, Kingsville football team would automatically become FCS- look at LIU Brooklyn- no football, who combined with CW Post- D2 football, and now LIU is a full Northeast Conference member.

It would need an act of the legislature. Theoretically they could just write a law to do it immediately, but practically it takes much longer. UTPA+UTB=UTRGV took about three years and making that happen required some accreditation irregularities we're just getting clear of now. TAMUK and TAMUCC are more stable and less entangled than UTB was, so maybe two years.
Keep in mind that the locals probably don't want it anymore than we did. The merger was the price for getting a medical school and was thought worth paying. Unless there's a similar incentive for the Corpus/Kingsville area I don't see their legislators buying in. Just an opinion.

Would they assume either name? Or create a new one?

No idea. LUI-Brooklyn and CW Post, became just LIU. The Pan American and Brownsville became UTRGV.

So it looks like this is really happening. After being a poster on the old WAC board when Hawaii was a member and then over the past ten years on this board watching the conference come close to disintegrating and then fight its way back to respect I'm very happy to see this. Thankfully there will be no more talk of the WAC having one foot in the grave and being the conference of misfit toys. Now there will be stability and interesting/hopeful prospects for the future. I'm particularly glad for NMSU which was the last member of the old FBS WAC left behind when everyone else bailed from 2010 to 2014 and has persevered through the difficult conference rebuilding process that's followed.
