But West Texas A&M seems like the safest choice.

Maybe it's WIU to be a travel partner for Chicago St.!! Seriously, the last D1 school to come to the WAC, left and went back to their old conference, UMKC.

It would be interesting if a D1 school moves to the WAC. A SLC school would go from sharing the pie with 12 other schools, to sharing it with 9 other schools, in a conference that is trying to stabilize.

WAC get's 10th member - for real (Official Discussion Thread)
A poster on the Reddit thread claims that someone from the Big Sky joining the WAC.

Leading me to think Northern Colorado, Southern Utah or one of the football-only schools (cal poly / ucdavis)

For me it will not be Northern Colorado as their Baseball program just moved to the Summit. Their school can jump to Summit to help with numbers. Southern Utah would need to restart Baseball and add women's sports to join the WAC or Summit. I think UC Davis or Cal POLY are ok with where they are at the moment.

With Covid related budget cuts, layoffs, and furloughs, there is no way Davis or CP would going from the Big West- all CA schools AND they get travel expenses to Hawaii paid for, to the WAC.

I don't expect UCD and Poly to leave their main league but they are football only members in Big Sky. If they move that affiliation over to the WAC, they can h

The TSU President said the WAC will add a 10th member. So, that assumes a full member. I do think if the WAC does add FCS football, they will invite Davis and CP for football only, since Big Sky schools has said there are too many football schools.

I think a school president saying a definitive statement like the Tarleton St president did, trumps a WACHoopsDigest Twitter account. There was no maybe or possibly in his statement.

Oh, absolutely.

I'm sure Hurley is accurate about the WAC decision, but after the WAC votes for a new member, isn't there some step where the new school's board of regents has to accept the invitation?

When saying a DI team will leave their conference for the WAC, please explain what benefits leaving an established conference for a currently transitional conference are.

HM, I respectfully disagree. Chicago State is struggling but they have a long tradition as a university and as a basketball team. The only reason NMSU and the rest of the WAC had a legit conference and a chance to go to the NCAA tournaments in 13-14 is because CSU agreed to join. For UTRGV it goes back further to 2008-2013; we only had a stable backetball schedule because CSU supported keeping the Great West "Conference" alive.

And aside from that mushy sentimental stuff, as a practical matter even 10 members isn't safe, we have too many schools that think they're too good for the WAC.

In my opinion they should have the option to stay as long as they can get the minimum number of NCAA-legal uniformed bodies onto an away court.

A team currently in an fcs conference who aspires to move to fbs (like the WAC says it does).

Ok - that might be valid, but would rule out NAU, SUU, UNC, Portland State, etc.

I also think that WAC FBS is a pipe dream

Opinions vary. That's what makes it fun to be here. IMHO 9 members is safe when the auto-bid minimum is 7, but I can see advantages to 10, e.g. it allows for an 18-game conference basketball schedule which is helpful for schools that have a hard time landing quality home OOC opponents.

This board isn't a huge sample size, but not many posters say their school is too good for the WAC. Do they say another conference would be a better fit for their school? Of course, but every school's fans and admin would say the samething. The worst case for the WAC, is every school getting an invitation to their dream conference. The best case for the WAC is a 10-12 schools who are committed to staying in the WAC. The reality would fall somewhere in the middle.

I’m not familiar with this blog/journalist/whoever he may be.. maybe some of you are.. but he states SUU is the one moving over to the WAC. The article is behind a paywall but there is a small thread in the post.

If the WAC is getting an already FCS school, that is amazing and a good sign.

The journalist who started the thread, wasn't the one who mentioned SUU. It was somebody else who replied to the thread.
