While I agree with the bolded segment above, UCA's situation involves membership in a conference which has a rule prohibiting an affiliate membership in another conference in a sport where their current conference, the Southland Conference, sponsors that sport. The conference rule takes precedence over a "would/could" type situation. It's not a matter of "would not". In the case of the SLC, it's "can't".

Take a look at the article link about the Southland Conference rule passed in 2010. Here are the key points as I see them.
1. UCA is a current member of the Southland Conference.
2. The conference has a rule precluding affiliate membership in another conference if the Southland Conference sponsors that sport.
3. UCA could not be an affiliate member of another conference in a sport sponsored by the SLC.
4. To move baseball means moving everything (which I was agreeing to originally).

Back to the WAC, it looks like UCA might be moving off the list of possible future members. As I recall, there were some posts listing them as a possibility.

Matt Brown’s looking mighty good right now. Why would UCA leave a LA/TX league for a southeastern league if Southland schools weren’t on the verge of moving to the WAC?

Not 100% credit. He did say that UCA to the WAC was possible

And, as a football-only member, it is still possible. the A-Sun doesn't have FCS football. So, maybe UCA is considering moving its football program to the WAC; while putting all its other sports in the A-Sun. Augustana could be looking at doing something similar with the Summit as well. Now, if the WAC adds, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Abilene Christian, Lamar and Southern Utah as full members while adding Central Arkansas and Augustana as Associate footballl members, the WAC would have a 9 member FCS conference. And, a 14 member basketball conference... just following Matt Brown's possible bread crumbs.

The ASun FCS teams plays in the Big South. If you were UCA would you rather play more regional teams in the Big South or play Dixie St and Southern Utah?

Didn't Northern Colorado just move their baseball team out of the WAC?

But UNC was only an affiliate member.

Right. UNC and Sac St are not full WAC members. The Big Sky doesn’t sponsor baseball. If they did they would both play in the Big Sky for baseball. Again, no school would move their baseball team to a different conference when their current conference sponsors it.

I guess it depends on which teams Central Arkansas wants to play in football yearly...

I don't know? I guess Central Arkansas has a choice between traveling to St. George Utah and Cedar City Utah or Hampton Virginia, Moon Township, Pennsylvania, and West Long Branch, New Jersey.

Big South football school's and potential WAC football school's miles from Central Arkansas (Conway, Arkansas)...

North Alabama... Florence, AL... 313.9
Stephen F. Austin... Nacogdoches, TX... 316.5
Sam Houston State... Huntsville, TX... 410.7
Lamar... Beaumont, TX... 428.3
Tarleton State... Stephenville, TX... 450.5
Abilene Christian... Abilene, TX... 522.1
Kennesaw State... Kennesaw, GA... 542.4
Gardner Webb... Boiling Spring, NC... 730.4
Augustana... Sioux Falls, SD... 755.2
North Carolina A&T... Greensboro, NC... 835.5
Charleston Southern... North Charleston, SC... 838.9
Campbell... Buies Creek, NC... 917.0
Robert Morris... Moon Township, PA... 923.2
Hampton... Hampton, VA... 1059.9
Monmouth... West Long Branch, NJ... 1247.9
Dixie State... St George, UT... 1375.9
Southern Utah... Cedar City, UT... 1394.4

Central Arkansas would be better off asking to join the Missouri Valley Football Conference as a football member.

Also, the CSU AD pitching the OVC as a possible destination to the BOT’s a month or two back makes more sense now, if he caught wind that the OVC may be losing schools instead of when the OVC had no room at the inn with 12 members.

Unless the Ohio Valley was on the verge of collapse, they would never take Chicago St.

I think with this news might be Matt Brown could be hinted.

We know several Southland schools are not happy with Incarnate Word, New Orleans an Houston Baptist to join. They wanted schools like Tarleton State, West Texas A&M, Angelo State and Midwestern State and maybe some others instead of those three.

Second, what are the finances of the Louisiana schools after this pandemic? Would schools get merged now?

If 5 schools leave the Southland for 21/22 season? It would make room for the large D2 Texas and Central Oklahoma to move up.

ASun commish said he wanted to form two conference from the ASun and the lone east coast single sport conference in 7 years. He said raiding from MEAC, Big South, Southern and OVC.

UCA may prefer to put football in the Big South instead of the WAC but may not have that choice.

While it’s true that the Big South has an agreement with the ASUN to harbor two of the ASUN’s three current FCS teams (the third plays in the non-scholarship Pioneer League), we don’t know whether that agreement extends to future ASUN members. Moreover the Big South is already committed to expanding from eight to ten football members when North Carolina A&T and Robert Morris come aboard in 2021. Is it really going to take on all three of the new ASUN additions as well, giving it an unwieldy 13 football members?

I think it’s more likely the Big South will cap football membership at 12 by adding the two OVC programs joining the ASUN (Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State), leaving the WAC as UCA’s most likely landing spot.

I have to say that it didn’t make any sense to me when Matt Brown floated UCA as a potential WAC addition, but I was looking at it as an all-sports membership. As a football-only membership it would make sense, if (and only if) multiple Southland schools in Texas were also jumping to the WAC.

As IWokeUpLikeThis says, Mr. Brown is looking mighty good right now.

Given the way the WAC was decimated by the MWC, potentially adding Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Lamar, Abilene Christian, and Southern Utah as full members and Central Arkansas and Augustana as affiliate football members is about the best the WAC could hope for moving forward. The WAC will never be what it once was in football but it could still become a fairly formidable basketball conference with the four Southland conference schools. We will see if this version of the WAC comes to fruition.

Western Division
Seattle University
California Baptist
Utah Valley
Southern Utah
Dixie State
Grand Canyon
New Mexico State

Eastern Division
Chicago State
Stephen F. Austin
Sam Houston State
Lamar
UT Rio Grande Valley
Tarleton State
Abilene Christian

FCS Football
Southern Utah
Dixie State
Abilene Christian
Tarleton State
Sam Houston State
Stephen F. Austin
Lamar
Central Arkansas (football-only)
Augustana (football-only)

UCA will be kick out of the Southland for the rest of their sports. It has to be all sports for them.

Matt Brown said the future look like the conference would be Arizona. Utah, Texas and Colorado. It does sound like Seattle, California Baptist and Chicago State will jump for a better spot.

West Texas A&M is a future WAC school. West Texas A&M needs to get their ducks in a row, and they will jump in two years or less.

This makes more sense:
https://athlonsports.com/college-footbal...tball-2020

Notice that no SLC Louisiana schools are being talked about. Texas schools, now Arkansas, but no Louisiana. In other words, half of the SLC is trying to jump ship, none of which are Louisiana schools. Should tell you something. As I've said all along the SLC has a Louisiana problem. Texas SLC public schools wanting to get away from the Texas privates is nonsense. What they really want, nay, NEED is to get away from the sinking ship that are the Louisina public schools in the SLC. They were all broke, lost and disfunctional long before Covid hit. I can only imagine their current state of affairs. My hypothesis: a while back, the football-playing Texas SLC schools gave the SLC Commish an "us or them" ultimatum, and didn't like the answer they received. With the WAC later bringing in Tarleton, now is the perfect time to make a break for it and let the SLC become the Lone Star FCS moveup transitional conference its destined to be. UCA in the WAC makes zero sense, but I could definitely see them in the ASUN. I agree UCA will be leaving the SLC, along with every other football-playing non-LA school, but it wont be to the WAC.

Hello, Abilene Christian fan here with a question for the board. Do any of you know of the WAC set any sort deadline for the schools it has approached about membership for making a decision? I know the ASUN said they were looking at a 60 day negotiating period but I’ve heard nothing about the WAC. Things have grown silent after an initial flurry of posts when word leaked out about invites to Southern Utah, ACU, Sam Houston, Stephen F Austin and Lamar.

My impression is the #Texas4 and Southern Utah aren’t prepared to leave their current conferences on their own. A unilateral move would leave the WAC far short of the six teams needed for a FCS football conference and the various schools have no desire to play as independents. It seems likely no a no announcement will be made until all or most schools are on board. It I have no idea when that might happen.

As an ACU fan how do you feel about potentially moving to the WAC vs staying in the Southland?

On our own? I think a move to the WAC isn’t in our best interest. ACU’s recruiting, alumni and fan base is to our east. WAC schools are to our west. For this and other reasons, I’m not excited about about leaving an established FCS conference for a nominal improvement in basketball RPI.

However, if we move in tandem with the other Texas schools I’m much more favorably inclined to leave the SLC. It really depends on what accommodation the WAC is willing to make to address concerns such as travel.

The SLC’s problems are known- neither HBU nor UIW have D1 facilities. HBU in particular needs major improvements that don’t appear forthcoming. The financial viability of the LA schools is an ongoing concern and is likely to be worse post COVID.

The Southland Conference will be further weakened if UCA leaves for the ASUN. There are two ways to address this— for the #Texas4 to join the WAC or for the SLC to poach Tarleton from the WAC to replace UCA. All things considered, I’d say a move would be in our best interest, although the WAC has some issues of its own.

I have no insight into what ACU is thinking. These are just my opinions. All I know is ACU is weighing its options and I was told several weeks ago that “no decision was imminent” whatever that means.
