We don't need national or even statewide mask mandates. It should be applied situationally. It makes no sense to have to wear a mask while pumping gas or sitting in a park in po-dunk Mississippi with no one within 50 feet of you. If you're in a crowded space, wear the mask.

And people are. Everywhere I go, the VAST majority are wearing masks when they need to be. We can actually make decisions for ourselves. The latest Pew Research indicates 85% of Americans say they wear masks regularly when in businesses.

There was a survey conducted by one of the national, liberal rags (WaPo maybe?) a couple of months ago about mask-wearing by country. The US fell pretty much in the middle of about 20 countries, with 59% usage at the time. This was higher than mask usage in all EU countries, except Spain and Italy with their high death rates and national mask mandates. Also, the survey showed that Nordic countries have largely resisted mask usage - from 1% to 9% wear them, depending on the country. Yet, most of these countries like Norway and Finland have very low death rates.

What sort of progress is being made?

Trials of the Oxford vaccine show it can trigger an immune response, and a deal has been signed with AstraZeneca to supply 100 million doses in the UK alone.

A group in China showed a vaccine was safe and led to protective antibodies being made. It is being made available to the Chinese military.

Having lived through a time as a child when we didn't have vaccines for killer illnesses, I feel very blessed and thankful to live in a time when you CAN protect yourself just by getting vaccinated. Sweden lost thousands of people to Covid because of their decision not to wear masks. And those Scandinavian countries have much younger populations than other European nations, so their death toll was lower. I wonder if you live in Memphis, because half of these idiots are NOT wearing masks. I disagree that most of us have common sense. Many of us do not believe something exists until we experience it personally.
