Bad News on Bowls?
https://www.cbssports.com/college-footba...d-shakeup/

If you read Jerry Palm's column (above) you'd believe so. Noteworthy: he has Boise replacing UC in a NY6 bowl (Peach) and says that the NCAA has dropped the requirement for minimum number of wins to be bowl eligible. So basically, 127 schools will be eligible meaning the P5 could fill more bowls than ever as a reward for playing less games than ever.

The bowls have contracts with conferences. They won't take away directly from the AAC. Only the handful of bowls that the P5 don't fill yearly won't be available (which is very few). The bowls won't want teams that are significantly below .500 either, as casual viewers won't want to tune in.

Boise could only jump UC if UC blows up.

RE: Bad News on Bowls?
Yeah, Boise doesn't have the opportunity to play any good teams this year & vault them over UC.

In the preseason poll that included all FBS teams, there wasn't a single MWC team ranked. Boise was the only one getting votes in the coach's poll, which means no MWC team was in the top 46 (although Air Force got 3 votes in the AP poll). And with no OOC games, there's no way for them to disprove those initial impressions.

In case you haven't noticed, there are some that think Boise is the only G5 school.

Jerry Palm is the same guy who prognosticates UC to the Gaspariila or Boca Bowl against Florida Atlantic or Troy every year. He’s a Purdue fan and a longtime UC hater. Back in the Big East days he used to always go on the radio in Columbus and say we played in the Big Least and crack on us.

I'm curious how far off the 2020 AAC is from the best years of the Big East when UC was playing in it. I think with UC, UCF, and Memphis we're getting pretty close.

Further off than you think, but the top is getting closer.

Just look at BK's time here.

Going by Sagarin
2007 the Big East was ranked forth ahead of the ACC and Big 10
2008 the Big East was ranked fifth ahead of the Big 10 and less than a point behind the Pac 10.
2009 the Big East was ranked second ahead of the Pac-10, ACC, Big 12 and Big 10. The SEC was way ahead in first.

The AAC has been 6th every season (though if you removed UConn last season they'd have been above the ACC).

I pretty much agree. That one West Virginia team that choked an end of season game against Pitt might have played for a national championship and won. That could have changed the perception of BE football at that point in time.

I realize Palm's projections are simply clickbait and it's way too early, especially in 2020, to project. But it's hard to take him seriously at all. Boise has yet to play a game and won't face a ranked team all year in their abbreviated season. Cincinnati is 2-0 with a win over a top 25 opponent and 2-3 more games with ranked teams. If Palm is a Purdue loyalist he has reason to hate UC after the 'Cats swept the football series and knocked Purdue out of the NCAA on Caupain's roller at the rim.

Yeah but his rants on Columbus radio were before we swept them in football and knocked them out of the NCAAT. I just think he is your classic "The B10 is the best at everything" homer from the Midwest.

With respect to the Big East vs. the AAC I think it is hard to compare due to the difference in size of the conferences (8 teams v. 12). Now that UConn is out of the conference, in football I think the depth is better in the AAC. People forget that Syracuse was basically Uconning it from 2005-2012. USF would sweep their OOC including a BCS school or two, but would be nearly swept after October. Also, there were legitimately only four good teams most years: UC, WVU, Pitt, UL and to add a fifth team I'll give you Rutgers. Often Pitt would shyte the bed and lose to Youngstown State, Bowling Green or someone like that. By contrast I think the top of UC, UCF, Memphis, Houston and SMU matches up quite well against that top tier. In fact possibly the AAC top is more athletic and explosive at least offensively than the Big East top group.

Out-of-conference records against FBS teams, including bowl games:
2006: 31-8 0.795
2007: 25-13 0.658
2008: 26-14 0.650
2009: 26-10 0.722
2010: 19-18 0.514
2011: 21-16 0.568

2017: 21-21 (also 1 loss to an FCS team) 0.500
2018: 17-26 (also 2 losses to FCS teams) 0.395
2019: 28-17 0.622

2019 was a great year for the American, but it would have been one of the worst years of the Big East.

Also, what good teams did AAC teams beat in 2019? Navy beat 8-5 KSU and 11-2 Air Force. After that, UC's victory over 6-7 Boston College was the best win in the whole conference (the next is either SMU over 11-3 FIU or 5-7 TCU, or Memphis over 4-8 Ole Miss).

The 2019 AAC is about comparable to the worst year we were in the Big East (2010).

In the Big East's 2nd worst year (2011), WVU crushed #14 Clemson in the Orange Bowl, USF (the worst team in the conference) beat 8-5 Notre Dame, UC beat 8-5 NC State and 6-7 Vanderbilt, Rutgers beat 6-7 Iowa State and 10-4 Ohio.

I never said the AAC was better. Maybe I am basing it on the classic “eyeball” test, but today’s UCF, Memphis and SMU squads could have competed very well in the old Big East. Pitt, Rutgers, USF and obviously Syracuse were poorly coached, particularly on game day. That is often why we were able to beat them- BK and to a lesser extent BJ outcoached and out schemed Dave Wannestadt, Bill Stewart, Greg Schiano, Steve Kragthorpe, etc.

RE: Bad News on Bowls?
What we now can anticipate:

American Athletic Conference Bowl Lineup (2020-25)
Annual Appearances
Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman (Annapolis, Maryland)
Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl (Fort Worth, Texas)/SoFi Hawaii Bowl (Honolulu, Hawaii) – alternating years
Bowl game to be named – (Boston, Massachusetts)

Four Selections Annually From the Following
Birmingham Bowl (Birmingham, Alabama)
Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl (Tampa, Florida)
SERVPRO First Responder Bowl (Dallas, Texas)
Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl (Boca Raton, Florida)
Frisco Bowl (Frisco, Texas)
AutoNation Cure Bowl (Orlando, Florida)
Myrtle Beach Bowl (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina)
New Mexico Bowl (Albuquerque, New Mexico)

If we get the NY6 great. If we do not let us hope UCF does and then we perhaps go back to the Military Bowl, because the other SUCK!

Attend a bowl game in frigid Fenway - I don't think so!
The others are the Tidy Bowls.

IIRC, the Fenway Bowl will be against the next to last AAC bow slot, compared to the Military Bowl which is the last AAC bowl slot. In other words, we might get a 7-5 team in most years as opposed to a 6-6 team. I suspect this will be the BC, Syracuse and on occasion Pitt Invitational. No way are you going to get a Florida State or NC State agreeing to play there.

Frigid Fenway in late Dec or early Jan. not my idea of fun.

Ok, I agree that UC, UCF, Memphis, and SMU would could compete well in the '05-'12 Big East. Navy might too.

But that's different than being as good. The Big East, which suffered in the eyeball test, still had several teams that were (to me) clearly better than UCF, Memphis, or SMU the past two years. '07 West Virginia, '11 West Virginia, Teddy Bridgewater's 2012 team. Brian Kelly's offense would smoke those teams. I think (hope) that '20 UC can be better than those, but it's not there now.

Also, the Big East was deep. The AAC is not.

Tulsa, ECU, and USF have all been worse in 2019/2020 than the worst Big East team. Syracuse's 2007/2008 teams went 2-10 and 3-9 but still beat 7-6 Notre Dame, 6-6 Louisville, and 5-7 Louisville.

Houston and Tulane in 2019/2020 would be in the basement of the Big East most years.

That's certainly respect and supports the narrative that Cincinnati football is something special, especially for the folks that have their P5 blinders on and are oblivious to the rest of college football.

The difference of course is if WI or GA lose to a ranked conference opponent they'll likely still land in Atlanta. If UC loses to a ranked SMU, I think you'll see a different G5 in the Peach Bowl projection the following week.

Hearing the new Fenway Park Bowl and the Holiday Bowl have been canceled for the season.

Have to wonder how many bowls outside the CFP and a few select major bowls will actually go forward.

Actually better off letting schools and conferences create their own matchups.

If UC isn’t slatted for major bowl the team is better off playing Louisville, Pitt, IU, Purdue, Miami U, Toledo or another regional team either at home or away for an extra game.
