I think with UC, UCF, and Memphis we're getting pretty close.
I pretty much agree. That one West Virginia team that choked an end of season game against Pitt might have played for a national championship and won. That could have changed the perception of BE football at that point in time.
I realize Palm's projections are simply clickbait and it's way too early, especially in 2020, to project. But it's hard to take him seriously at all. Boise has yet to play a game and won't face a ranked team all year in their abbreviated season. Cincinnati is 2-0 with a win over a top 25 opponent and 2-3 more games with ranked teams. If Palm is a Purdue loyalist he has reason to hate UC after the 'Cats swept the football series and knocked Purdue out of the NCAA on Caupain's roller at the rim.
Yeah but his rants on Columbus radio were before we swept them in football and knocked them out of the NCAAT. I just think he is your classic "The B10 is the best at everything" homer from the Midwest.
With respect to the Big East vs. the AAC I think it is hard to compare due to the difference in size of the conferences (8 teams v. 12). Now that UConn is out of the conference, in football I think the depth is better in the AAC. People forget that Syracuse was basically Uconning it from 2005-2012. USF would sweep their OOC including a BCS school or two, but would be nearly swept after October. Also, there were legitimately only four good teams most years: UC, WVU, Pitt, UL and to add a fifth team I'll give you Rutgers. Often Pitt would shyte the bed and lose to Youngstown State, Bowling Green or someone like that. By contrast I think the top of UC, UCF, Memphis, Houston and SMU matches up quite well against that top tier. In fact possibly the AAC top is more athletic and explosive at least offensively than the Big East top group.
Out-of-conference records against FBS teams, including bowl games:
2006: 31-8 0.795
2007: 25-13 0.658
2008: 26-14 0.650
2009: 26-10 0.722
2010: 19-18 0.514
2011: 21-16 0.568
2017: 21-21 (also 1 loss to an FCS team) 0.500
2018: 17-26 (also 2 losses to FCS teams) 0.395
2019: 28-17 0.622
2019 was a great year for the American, but it would have been one of the worst years of the Big East.
Also, what good teams did AAC teams beat in 2019? Navy beat 8-5 KSU and 11-2 Air Force. After that, UC's victory over 6-7 Boston College was the best win in the whole conference (the next is either SMU over 11-3 FIU or 5-7 TCU, or Memphis over 4-8 Ole Miss).
The 2019 AAC is about comparable to the worst year we were in the Big East (2010).
In the Big East's 2nd worst year (2011), WVU crushed #14 Clemson in the Orange Bowl, USF (the worst team in the conference) beat 8-5 Notre Dame, UC beat 8-5 NC State and 6-7 Vanderbilt, Rutgers beat 6-7 Iowa State and 10-4 Ohio.
I never said the AAC was better. Maybe I am basing it on the classic “eyeball” test, but today’s UCF, Memphis and SMU squads could have competed very well in the old Big East. Pitt, Rutgers, USF and obviously Syracuse were poorly coached, particularly on game day. That is often why we were able to beat them- BK and to a lesser extent BJ outcoached and out schemed Dave Wannestadt, Bill Stewart, Greg Schiano, Steve Kragthorpe, etc.
Ok, I agree that UC, UCF, Memphis, and SMU would could compete well in the '05-'12 Big East. Navy might too.
But that's different than being as good. The Big East, which suffered in the eyeball test, still had several teams that were (to me) clearly better than UCF, Memphis, or SMU the past two years. '07 West Virginia, '11 West Virginia, Teddy Bridgewater's 2012 team. Brian Kelly's offense would smoke those teams. I think (hope) that '20 UC can be better than those, but it's not there now.
Also, the Big East was deep. The AAC is not.
Tulsa, ECU, and USF have all been worse in 2019/2020 than the worst Big East team. Syracuse's 2007/2008 teams went 2-10 and 3-9 but still beat 7-6 Notre Dame, 6-6 Louisville, and 5-7 Louisville.
Houston and Tulane in 2019/2020 would be in the basement of the Big East most years.
