James Madison Shocks Football Landscape, Bowl Invitations Coming

In a football season that so few FCS teams chose to participate, JMU saw opportunity, and the decision is paying big dividends. It wasn’t the easy way out; scheduling involved relentless negotiations as teams pushed forward to play a season. “We had to make decisions on the fly, it’s not like we could plan ahead like a bunch of accountants preparing for the annual audit,” said Jeff Bourne, the smiling Athletic Director at James Madison.

Bourne shares the credit with President Jon Alger; President Alger kicked off an athletic department planning meeting in early August; “let’s find a way to make this happen, the players deserve that, so long as it can be done safely.” From that point on, it was a success mindset; Coach Cignetti called in some favors with scheduling, the players cheered and hugged when told they were playing; some had contemplated transferring to FBS schools , like Virginia and VA Tech; “I wasn’t going to let that happen” said a proud Jeff Bourne.

As the National Bowls consider teams to fill the prime time spots, James Madison is quickly emerging as a prized candidate. “As we began to look at what they offer; in addition to a winning football record, there is a rabid fan base that is hungry for a bowl experience, It is a win-win situation,” said an anonymous bowl director.

Bourn was quick to point out that success off the field is equally important. “fundraising is going through the roof, enrollment applications are skyrocketing, especially with the male gender; and recruiting has gone gangbusters; people want to go where there is a can do attitude; not where everyone acts like they are victims of circumstance. Sometime you just can’t wait for your ship to come in, you need to swim after it and get on board.”

While most FBS teams will play one game a season against FCS competition, James Madison schedule only Campbell and Western Carolina from the FCS ranks, instead, negotiating to play games against Liberty, Army, Marshall, Appalachain State, Wake Forest, Navy, Charlotte, and North Carolina, soundly defeating all of them, President Alger commented; “we aspire to play at the highest level every year, our athletic budget exceeds every team in the MAC, CUSA, and the Sun Belt, we have over 22,000 students now; we can no longer satisfy our fan base with lopsided sleeper games against William and Mary and Elon and Merimack”.

President Alger’s wish is coming true, as multi-year contracts were negotiated that bring numerous FBS teams to JMU in future years, “It was a perfect scenario” Alger reflected.

You can tell it’s realistic because of the reference to applications being up, especially among the male gender. This guy...

This horrendous dreck brought to you by semicolon.

Semicolon. Do you have a lot of thoughts; but no idea how to put them into proper sentences? Throw a semicolon in there; even if it's not remotely reasonable; there's no bad time; for; a; semicolon;

Well, it should (at the minimum) be relocated to OT.

In the spirit of creativity, you have to appreciate this post. Had this actually happened and not been a contrived fantasy, we all would have been pretty excited. It is good fiction.

Dukeman is a flaming idiot with no true sense of reality but a guy is allowed to dream. I found this post very entertaining and humorous. Some of his best work.

What's the obsession with more male students? Is there supposed to be some correlation of male:female student ratio to something that would actually benefit JMU by it going up?

Gotta ask Dukeman. He seems to want more dudes at JMU. Maybe because of historical athletic donation data. Maybe other reasons? Maybe he’s just a big fan of guys?

Though I don't have specific data, I'd wager that athletic contributions correlate directly to that ratio ( not that those contributions would make us a better academic school). On overall contributions, I have no idea.

Longhorn could better fill us in. My understanding in the past was that we could get higher performing female applicants that applied & wanted to enroll here. Getting the same caliber & amount of male applicants to enroll was more difficult. Could have been hearsay, but I did here that on a number of occasions.

OldDawg, you’re correct that JMU female applicant academic profiles are higher (and more numerous) than the male applicants. Nationally, across the country for universities of similar profile as JMU, women attending college tend to outnumber the men on campus by a ratio of 58-60% to 40-42%. That ratio will be closer to 50-50, or even favor men at the state flagship schools. Why do men attend the state flagships in greater percentages? Sports no doubt play a part, but also opportunities to study in strong business and engineering programs. JMU is still a relatively young university, as are the emerging strengths of JMU’s business and engineering programs. In many ways the growing strength of JMU academically and D1 sports mirror one another.

Interesting: Though it does appear that schools with strong engineering such as Tech, State, and TX A&M definitely attract the guys, but simply being a state flagship isn't the difference maker that I would have thought. Each of these schools are in the favor of females by at least 6% and most are much more.

UNC-Chapel Hill 41% male to 59% female
University of SC 46% to 54%
UVA 45% to 55%
UGA 43% to 57%
University of FL 44% to 56%
Bama 44% to 56%
Old Miss 44% to 56%
LSU 47% to 53%
Texas 46% to 54%
Kentucky 44% to 56%
FL State 43% to 57%
Delaware 42% to 58%

Thanks. I wish Texas was like that when I attended 50+ years ago! The numbers have totally flipped.

Those numbers represent what’s been trending for the last three (or more) decades.

More women are coming out of High School with not only the intent to earn college degrees, but in numbers vastly exceeding the number of men who choose a college career path. Additionally, the women are better prepared academically, both by the High School coursework they’ve taken, but as represented by their higher standardized SAT or other college admit test scores.

Face it guys, in the next half-century women are going to be running the joint. 04-bow

If you have any sort of job in the "real world" today then you know that the worst possible combination you can be is old, white and male (aka pale, male and stale, as I had one progressive female colleague state just prior to the pandemic). The next worst combo is young white and male. Followed by being male. At the top of the list of best combinations is artist formerly known as male. Perhaps this is what the author is of the Onion piece above is referring to. If you support males, you are a relic, living in the past, misogynistic, Donald Trump.
