Improved Communication
Roku, Amazon, or Apple TV simply use an app that streams the broadcast from the schools website. No different than CAA TV did before Flo. It's not obvious to me, other than some behind the scenes interview content, what Flo is providing now that the CAA wasn't already doing. Perhaps, like you said, they wanted out of the video production game. But, they were already doing it

RE: Improved Communication
I very much disagree that Flo is a long term or high upside play. Quite the opposite: they offered the most money so the league took the short term pay off. The downside is a complete inability to grow the audience (nobody is stumbling upon a game on FloSports) or take advantage of unforeseen opportunities (like your football games suddenly being played in the spring without FBS competition).

Oh for the days just two years ago when we produced our own W&M telecasts of home games and you had telecasts from NBC Sports Channel, MASN, and Comcast Sports.

Flo is an embarrassment.

Maybe there's a world in 5-10 years where Flo is a super popular streaming service, but I don't see it.

Paying for CAA.TV seems like it would've still made a decent amount of money, or if we went with ESPN+ at least you have a shot of a casual viewer scrolling past a Tribe game and watching it.

Say CAA.TV were $8/month, if each team got 1,000 fans to sign up for 6 months you've basically made all the Flo money, and that's assuming no ad money. You could also offer something like a $5 week long pass, for fans of OOC opponents to watch a game.

Of course, I'm not certain every CAA school would actually be able to get 1,000 paying fans...

But also there's the added expense of a support team that maintains caa.tv, customer support, etc. Not to say that it can't be done, but I'd be surprised if it could be done for $8/month in the CAA.

Did we have non-revenue sports being broadcast on Flo? In the reviews I was reading about Flo, one of their selling points was an outlet for track, gymnastics, etc. fans to watch those sports where there would ordinarily be nothing.

Did we have that stuff previously when CAA.tv was free?

You might need a contractor or two if CAA.tv is paid, but most companies don't really run their own support staff, it's not that expensive.

That's what I was thinking. All CAA games were free and they seemed able to broadcast all the games without issue. I'm pretty sure anything put out from Tribe athletics was available on CAA TV. The CAA TV app, that is still up on roku, isn't too bad. Broadcast through CAA TV, work in a reasonable pay wall, and you'd see marked increase In subscribers. And, I'd think, more shared revenue coming in. Only the most hardcore of fan is willing to pony up the Flo annual fees.

Just renewed my FloSports for $95.88 annually. Price of reality.

I'll probably bite the bullet as well. But, with the current Covid landscape, I'll probably sign up at the last minute.

I think it makes more sense to sign up for a monthly deal with Flo and then cancel it later, right now it's $12.49 a month but there's often some sort of deal to get it for less, if you figure we really only need 6 or 7 months of it to cover basketball and football seasons

Yeah, that's what I did last season. It worked well and apparently was simpler to cancel than what people experienced with the Annual subscription, while costing a little less overall.

RE: Improved Communication
For many of us who hate FloSports thought you would find this statement from the JMU AD of interest:

"I've hinted at this previously but in full transparency, James Madison did not (and still does not) support FloSports as the best option to meet the league's streaming needs. JMU was the lone dissenting vote. We had a platform available for free to our fans, and we were able to cover our costs via sponsorship elements within the broadcast. I'm not thrilled that our fans must pay ( $12.50 on a month-to-month basis or $7.99 per month with annual subscription ) to watch our events during a time when attendance is restricted. However, we are part of a conference and sometimes must abide by decisions made by the majority that might not be best for one institution."

It's a shame there weren't two dissenting votes. Maybe we should look in Harrisonburg for our next AD.

If you check their board, most would love to give their AD to us.

RE: Improved Communication
No one would want me for their AD but the optimum way forward for a mid-major on this topic is a no-brainer.

The value of an energized and enthusiastic fanbase able to easily and cheaply to view home and away games in all sports clearly outweights any piddly revenue a school may gain from revenues on a pay-for-view platform.

That the folks on this board (and we have all demonstrated an outsized loyalty to Tribe sports) are discussing whether the Flosports package is worthwhile and which strategies allow us to minimize its cost shows what a turnoff Flosports is.

Kudos to the JMU AD for opposing this move and shame on the other nine ADs (assuming all voted) for supporting it.

Especially important to minimize any subscription obligation this season when the odds of games being played for both basketball and football is 50/50.

I know there’s a lot of griping (mostly about football/conference stuff), but I think any sane JMU alum, if being honest, would say Bourne is an outstanding AD. He just hasn’t been allowed to operate like a real AD due to reporting to the Finance VP (who wields outsized power comparative to his VP position) instead of the President.

If Bourne wanted to come to W&M, he’d be a no-brainer hire. But he’s not leaving til retirement.
