Improved Communication
This is a very good, welcomed idea. Let's take a step back and applaud attempts at better communication.

Great idea.
How long before they put a cease and desist letter out to this page?

Doesn't take much sleuthing to see that our Tribe Talk predates theirs. In fact, are they paying a licensing fee to use our name? Of course, someone from Cleveland might have something to say to us as well.

Does this include satellite tv (Direct TV, etc)? Or can it also be seen on the Tribe tv on tribeathletics.com ?

Good questions.
Should certainly be available after the broadcast on the Tribeathletics website, at least temporarily. Understand not wanting to parasitize the viewership on TV, so ok to show it the next day etc.

RE: Improved Communication
I'll be a mild naysayer here.

This really isn't improving communication, is it? It's simulcasting a radio show that already exists on a local cable access channel essentially.

It's a good move, no issue with it - but I'm not sure it really does much to "improve communications" in the sense of what most fans/supporters/alumni/athletes are looking for.

I agree with you. Low hanging fruit to show "improved" communications. I still think it's great to put it on TV.

Improved Communication
The thread title is worded that way as a catch all for what Rowe promised. More to come, I hope. Tribe Talk is just the first initiative of what I see as an attempt to reach out.

Athletic Department is expanding the scope of the show to reach out to fans. It's not Huge fielding questions via Skype but it's improving communication by sharing information weekly. It shows, at minimum, some understanding of what Tribe fans want.

I would bet that, compared to the pittance W&M gets from Flo Sports, they could generate more revenue by offering everything for free and including a pointed message inviting fans to donate to support that free access continuing.

I’m absolutely positive that free availability would help lure borderline folks into becoming more regular fans (and some eventually to be donors). A lot of good will is being squandered with Flo for very little in return.

Monetize live stream games and force us to watch ads during timeouts. Super simple.

Heck, I'm happy to pay for an annual subscription if it goes to TribeTV.

I'd be 100% OK with paying a reasonable fee for a Tribe TV subscription. Seems like all CAA teams have in-house broadcasting. Why not cut out the middleman and offer a pay CAA service through CAA TV? An even split between participating schools seems like it could bring in more than Flo kicks back to the schools.

Having watched a lot of Tribe broadcasts on-line over the years, the Tribe broadcasts were generally head and shoulders above those of other CAA schools, and imho better than Flo Sports.

I'd gladly pay a reasonable subscription fee to Tribe TV.

I don't have direct knowledge of this, but I would guess that FloSports handles a lot of the overhead and logistics, even if we're just hooking up our own production to the FloSports feed. It would be a good question for the next Town Hall though.

Was it a conference decision to go with the Flo? (Sorry, couldn’t resist). If so, W&M is probably stuck with it anyway.

I'm sure Flo does handle logistics. But, if we remember pre-Flo, every CAA game was available for free on CAA TV. It seems like a better money maker for the conference as a whole to charge viewers for a CAA league pass and cut out the middle men at Flosports. These broadcasts aren't Flo broadcasts. They are just putting out the product already done by the schools. I could be way off, I'm just not sure what Flo really brings to the table other than a more polished website. I never had issues logging in to games on the much more spartan CAA TV website.

There is going to be a lot more use of Flo. I hope it can handle the increased volume of subscribers and feeds.

I agree with you that CAA.tv seemed easier for fans. My assumption is that the thing Flo is or will be bringing to the table is the legwork for advertising and distribution deals. I don't think the CAA wants to to have a media production staff. Flo's business model, based on their games available, is to provide leagues an alternative to the ESPN monolith, where we were (I think) paying ESPN to be distributed through their platform. Our biggest struggle is being an early adopter. At this point, Flo is still ironing out all the kinks. Hopefully, there's something in the contract for us that gets us a good deal if & when they get a larger footprint in the sports media landscape. It's a gamble, but one that could pay off for us long-term, despite the short-term troubles.

What I'm envisioning as the difference between CAA.tv and Flo is that in both cases, W&M is in charge of filming the game. When we were with CAA.tv, either W&M or the CAA had to make agreements with the providers/distributors, maintain the infrastructure to get the feed out, establish a relationship with Roku/Apple.tv/etc to enable people to receive the feed, and sell advertising and insert that into the broadcast. With Flo, we don't do any of that, W&M/CAA makes sure the feed gets to Flo, likely with some tech support assistance from Flo, and we're done. Since Flo is representing multiple conferences, they're able to leverage that content library and provide an interface for schools/conferences to get their feeds to providers that Flo has established a relationship with.

All of the above is pure speculation on my part, though. I don't have any information about whether what I laid out is correct or not. But I can see a school and/or conference not wanting to have to negotiate all the distribution contracts or manage the infrastructure.
