Yea and I think that’s what is intriguing NFL scouts about him. His improvement and his raw talent give him a high ceiling. I think he had a low floor as well, but the potential is clear with his arm strength, size, speed, and leadership wualities.

He'll never play a down in the league, but he is effective for college ball. The NFL relies on skills that are just so rare, much easier and more reliable to stock a college roster up with runners who can complete some simple pass plays. Increasingly, the best HS QBs are signing with MAC type programs where they can develop properly w/o risk of getting benched. Why risk the Burrow treatment? Even Brady had to fight for playing time at Michigan.

Link for the bold? Regarding Brady, all players fight for playing time. Michigan at that time was QB U, so fighting for a job was the norm. QBs to the NFL

I don't think Des as a prayer of being considered by the NFL as a QB. However...

If he continues to improve and develop as he is doing right now, I DO think that a team may take a late round flyer on him for a Taysom Hill type role.

He's got the size. He can run. I'm going to assume that he can catch a pass. And, he can step in and play QB in a pinch or on specially designed gimmick plays.

In other words, Des could be a backup quarterback who is actually useful if the starter is healthy.

Yeah, I could see that with the right coaching staff.

No idea if he plays a down in the NFL. I mean I don’t think he is an NFL starter, but injuries happen and we’ve seen 3rd/4th string QB’s be thrown into playing plenty of times.

His size, athleticism, and arm strength are intriguing and that is why he is already getting some attention among scouts. He still has to improve, but if he continues to put up the type of numbers and play the way he has over the last 5 games, he will be on an NFL roster.

Ridder will not play in the NFL. If there is any scout out there with some analysis that says otherwise I would be shocked to see. But his accuracy is still not close to NFL level, even though his decision making has improved quite a bit since earlier in the year. He is elusive and can make things happen with room, but is not a freak like Lamar Jackson.

No doubt Ridder still has flaws, but all college QB’s have flaws outside of a very, very few Elite QB prospects.

If he keeps throwing for 300 yards, and running like he has, there will be a team that drafts him and thinks they can fix his accuracy, or scheme around it. With his size, speed, and arm strength, someone will take a late round flyer on him, or at least sign him as an UDFA. Now whether he can keep up this level of play remains to be seen, but if he does he will get a shot at making an NFL roster and probably will be drafted in 2022.

Edit: of course he isn’t Lamar Jackson, but few QB’s are and I don’t think anyone is claiming he is a first RD pick, or anywhere close to it.

Don't know about Ridder in the NFL, but he does have future coach written all over him - smart, prepares meticulously, and his teammates love him.

Unless he has mechanical issues, there is no reason to think they can fix his accuracy. And I haven't heard anything about mechanical issues.

Correction. Ridder will not play a down in the NFL on purpose. But when Duck Hodges is getting 6 starts in 8 games and 160 throws for the Steelers last season, I'm gonna say anything is possible. Kid had 32 TD's and 16 picks in his final season at Samford, not to be confused with Stanford.

Ridder has had 5 great games. If he has another season full of those maybe someone gives him a look. I still doubt it will happen, but who knows.

Exactly, and this is just one example and what I eluded to earlier. How many QB’s have the Cowboys been through this season? How many had you heard of?

Nobody is claiming he is a future starter, but teams typically carry 2 QB’s + 1 QB on Practice Squad. They also carry more during training camp. If he keeps playing like he has, he will get a shot. Whether he ends up playing or not probably comes down to too many variables, like franchise, fit, injuries, etc... I pointed out that plenty of teams get down to 3rd/4th QB’s.

Yea, this also goes without saying, but I did say IF he continues playing like he has. I mean if he reverts back then of course he’s not getting drafted. If continues to play like the last few games though, he will get a look and likely get drafted based on his ceiling. It only takes one team to fall in love with his size, speed, arm strength and he will get drafted and has a shot at sticking around as a developmental QB.

It's kind of crazy to think about, but if Ridder returns...he may be on the Heisman shortlist with all of the people graduating/likely to declare.

Ridder's the same type of player as Taysom Hill. In the right system, he can be a very good player.

Very rare that someone is that good of an athlete to get drafted playing a different position or a hybrid role. I don't recall what Taysom was like coming out of BYU but when I see him playing on the Saints he's very physical and runs with power. I have never seen that type of physicality with Ridder.

As far as him getting drafted as a pure QB as good as he's been playing it's still making short throws with some intermediate. The only throws completed downfield were basically blown coverage. He's done nothing to show me that he's developing into an NFL level passer. He's playing as the perfect college running QB with enough passing to move the chains. That said when you're the QB of a highly ranked team he's probably going to get a team taking a chance on him late or at least a camp invite.

Agreed. Not Taysom Hill, Ridder has a totally different style.

I think Des is still the same guy from the beginning of the season. The biggest difference is, he started making a few plays, and now is playing with a TON of confidence and swagger. That was not there at the beginning of the year.

The difference is 5 games ago heading into the SMU game UC benched multi year starters along the interior OL for a true freshman Center and backup guards who are just flat out better linemen. Line play has been really good since then. Running game opened up and Ridder has had time in the pocket to relax and let things slow down.

Yep...oddly enough, High FBS D1 scholarships quarterbacks tend to be pretty decent when they don't have guys blowing up the pocket from the middle every play. You'll notice, a lot less of Ridder's throws have been roll outs this year...he's either stepping up, where he is able to develop more power and throw off of consistent feet, or standing in a composed pocket.

I never made my opinion of Robinson and Cooper much of a secret. The guys look like Tarzan but play like...well not Tarzan. Staff was in love with their strength in the weight room but at some point you have to be able to turn your guy without holding and not get stood up and pushed back allowing the defensive player into your chest most plays.

Thankful the staff finally saw enough. Best coaching decision of 2020, IMO.
