I had talked to Starkey 45 minutes earlier. The team was ready to play tomorrow, though they only had eight healthy players in practice today (four on Wednesday, five on Thursday).

They'll try to keep playing. Starkey said they were looking to play Wednesday at Ohio, earlier if the MAC found an opponent for Sunday or Monday.

Rutgers had eight games in a row canceled and supposed to play Sunday.

I have no idea how the MAC going to do tournament seedings if teams don't play the same number of games. In football, it was winning percentage but a team had to play half of its games. That would be 10.

So far the MAC is so wide open the seedings may not mean much. BG and Buffalo have lost two, and Central, Ball State and NIU three. Eastern and Ohhio are 6-4.

KSU, of course, is 4-0 but has played half as many games as any other team and six fewer than two others.

Good to know the team is getting healthy (sort of).

There's now a full story on the postponement and the team on the blog at https://wbbFlashes.com. It includes MAC standings. (I learned a new Wordpress trick.)

Kent is still in first place at 4-0, though Flashes have played half as many games as any other team in the league.

RE: Women's basketball 2020-21
It looks as if the women will finally get to play Wednesday.

Barring a last-minute COVID attack (which we had last week from Eastern Michigan), the Flashes will play at Ohio.

KSU hasn't played in three full weeks. The Flashes had five games postponed because of a COVID outbreak on their team, then had last Saturday's game postponed because of COVID problems at Eastern.

Kent State beat Ohio 84-80 back on Dec. 11. At that time, it looked like a pretty big upset. Coaches picked OU second in their preseason poll. Kent had lost its first two games.

Kent's win started a five-game winning streak that's still active. Ohio is 7-4 in the MAC and sits seventh in the league, though it's only a half game out of third. The Bobcats are 9-5 overall.

KSU leads the MAC at 4-0, but every other team has played at least nine games. Five teams have played 11. The Flashes are 5-2 overall.

Cancellation of the EMU game may end up working to Kent State's advantage. The Flashes had practiced only three days last week, twice with fewer than seven players. They would have been missing several players had they played Saturday.

Now they're at full strength with a full set of practices behind them.

Against Ohio, they'll have to contend with senior guard Cece Hooks, who is one of the hottest players in the country. She's averaged 30.4 points over her last five games and is second in Division I in scoring (26.4 points a game). Wing Erica Johnson averages 19 points a game for the Bobcats.

KSU's Nila Blackford leads the conference in rebounding (13 a game) and leads Kent State in scoring (16.4). Mariah Modkins averages 10.3 and Katie Shumate, Casey Shumate, Clare Kelly and Lindsey Thall all average between 8.5 and 9.8. (That's average in conference games only, which I consider a better indication at this time of years.)

The Flashes also announced Tuesday that their Eastern Michigan game had been rescheduled for Monday (Feb. 8). That means the Flashes will play three games next week.

I don't see any way KSU can make up all seven games they didn't play because of COVID. But they could well play three a week through the first week of March before the league tournament starts March 10. That would be quite a grind, but that's life in the time of COVID.

RE: Women's basketball 2020-21
The women lost 85-70 at Ohio in game that was closer than the score.

Flashes pulled within 72-68 with four minutes to go but just ran out of gas at the end.

That's not surprising for their first game back after a COVID-19 outbreak on the team. KSU had six games postponed over three weeks.

The team looked sloppy and slow at times and good at times. In the fourth quarter, they used a full-court press to score eight points in 52 seconds.

Katie Shumate led Flashes with a season-high 23 points. Reserve guard Hannah Young scored in double figures for the second straight game with 11 points. Freshman guard Casey Santoro had 10 points, all in the fourth quarter.

Nila Blackford had nine points, nine rebounds, three assists and four steals. She also had six turnovers as KSU committed 22.

Ohio's Cece Hooks had 29 points, nine assists and seven steals before fouling out with six minutes to go, but Kent State couldn't take advantage of her absence. Hooks is averaging 30.3 over her last seven games. Ohio's other star guard, Erica Johnson, didn't play because of a knee injury.

Flashes drop to 4-1 in MAC (5-3 overall) but are still technically in first place with an .800 winning percentage. But every other team has played at least twice as many games. Ohio is 8-4 (1-5 overall) and tied for sixth in the league. Aside from Kent, the next seven teams in the standings have either three or four losses.

RE: Women's basketball 2020-21
Kent State hosts last-place Miami at noon Saturday on ESPN+.

The Redhawks just won their first MAC game on Wednesday, beating 10th-place Western Michigan 73-64. Sophomore point guard Peyton Scott scored 37 points in that game. She averages 20.8 in MAC play this season.

Overall Miami is 2-14, 1-11 in the MAC.

Because of COVID-19 problems, Kent State has played less than half as many games as Miami and most of the rest of the conference. The Flashes are 4-1 in the MAC and 5-3 overall. They're technically in first place with a .800 winning percentage. Second-place Bowling Green is 9-3 in the league and 13-4 overall.

The game is the first of three straight at home for KSU. Monday they'll host Toledo in a makeup game of one postponed by the virus, and Wednesday they'll host Akron.

RE: Women's basketball 2020-21
The women edged Miami 71-69 on a putback by Lindsey Thall with 1.8 seconds to go.

Miami is better than its 1-14 record, but the Flashes clearly aren't back to where they were before they lost 15 days to a COVID-19 outbreak on the team.

Kent State is 5-1 (6-3 overall) and still technically in first place in the MAC with a .833 winning percentage. Second-place Bowling Green is 10-3 (.769 winning percentage) and 14-4 overall. The two teams play in Kent on Wednesday.

But first KSU hosts Toledo on Monday in a makeup game from one postponed by the coronavirus.

Nila Blackford had her fifth double-double in six MAC games with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Thall had 17 points, and Clare Kelly had 12 on 5-of-5 shooting. Freshman guard Casey Santoro had seven assists.

Miami's Peyton Scott had 34 points. She had 37 on Wednesday when the Redhawks beat Western Michigan.

Lots more details, including quotes from Thall and coach Todd Starkey, is on the blog at https://wbbFlashes.com.

Toledo outscored us 6-1 in the last seven seconds to send the game into OT. This will be a tough one if we lose.

Up 7 with 39 seconds. By my calculations Toledo can score 34 points yet.

THey have scored 9 but we are still ahead by 4 with 4 seconds left and the ball. Defense has been a rumor for the last 6 minutes or so.

RE: Women's basketball 2020-21
The Flashes had four players score in double figures in the overtime win over Toledo. All four had 10 points or more of their points after halftime.

Player of the game was Clare Kelly, who had 27 points and made 12-of-12 free throws. Her previous high was 20 points against Division III Hiram last year. Against D1 competition, her best was 14.

Katie Shumate didn't start for the first time this season (coach Todd Starkey wouldn't say why), and KSU trailed 39-30 at halftime. But in the second half, Shumate had eight points and had nine more in overtime.

Nila Blackford had 15 points and 13 rebounds, her sixth double-double in seven MAC games. Lindsey Thall had 14 and blocked three shots. She leads the MAC in blocks for the third-straight season.

Flashes went on a 15-4 run in the late third quarter and early fourth quarter to overcome a 13-point deficit. They led the last eight minutes of the game until Toledo's Sophia Wiard hit two 3-pointers in the last 3.2 seconds.

Big game Wednesday:

The first-place Flashes (6-1 in the MAC, 7-3 overall) play second-place Bowling Green (10-3 and 14-4) at 6 p.m. on ESPN+. The MAC ranks standings by winning percentage.

It will be KSU's third game in five days and fourth game in eight days after their 25-day break because of a COVID-19 outbreak on the team.

RE: Women's basketball 2020-21
Kent State's women face off against Bowling Green at 6 p.m. Wednesday for first place in the MAC. The game is on ESPN+.

Flashes are 6-1 in league play and have a .857 winning percentage. BG is 10-3 (.769). The MAC ranks teams by percentage.

Kent State has played far fewer games than BG and any other team in the league because of their 25-day COVID-19-related layoff in January.

BG leads the league in team defense (61.8 points per game) by nine points. The Falcons are also first in steals and turnover margin.

They have the clear leading candidate for freshman of the year in Lexi Fleming, who averages 17.7 points a game. BG starts two other freshmen, a sophomore and a junior.

The Falcons start five guards and bring a 6-2 post off the bench.

Kent State is coming off two close victories in the last seven days. They beat Miami 71-69 on a last-second shot Saturday and beat Toledo 93-87 in overtime Monday.

RE: Women's basketball 2020-21
Another overtime, but this one didn't go the Flashes' way.

Bowling Green beat KSU 80-79 on a basket on an offensive rebound with two seconds to play. Kent State's Nila Blackford got off a four-foot shot at the buzzer, but BG blocked it as the KSU bench screamed for a foul that was never called. (The video reply showed what looked like a clean block.)

The win moves BG into first place in the MAC with an 11-3 record and .786 winning percentage. Kent State is 6-2 (.750). The MAC using winning percentage to determine standings when teams haven't played the same number of games.

It was Kent State's second overtime game in three days, third game in five days and fourth game in eight days. All that came after a COVID-19 outbreak on the KSU team, six postponed games and 25-day layoff.

Blackford, who coach Todd Starkey said was playing exhausted at the end, had her seventh double-double in eight MAC games with 23 points and 13 rebounds.

Lindsey Thall had 18 points and six offensive rebounds (seven overall). Katie Shumate had 15 points and Clare Kelly 11, along with four assists and no turnovers.

KSU outrebounded BG 46-34.

The Flashes, which had committed an average of 21 turnovers in its three previous games, had only 12. Bowling Green had 13. BG had been leading the league in turnover margin at +7.

RE: Women's basketball 2020-21
The women trailed by as many as 21 in the first half, battled back to tie the game 71-71 in the fourth quarter, but then ran out of gas.

Central Michigan scored the last 13 points of the game to win 84-71.

Kent State drops to 6-3 in the MAC and a three-way tie for fourth place. Central Michigan moves to third at 11-4. Bowling Green leads the league, and Northern Illinois moved to second with a win over third-place Buffalo.

The game was KSU's fifth in 11 days after a 25-day break because of a COVID-19 outbreak on the team.

Flashes shot 69% in the third quarter in their comeback. Katie Shumate had 17 points and Clare Kelly 14. Nila Blackford had her eight double-double in nine league games with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Micaela Kelly and Molly Davis put on a spectacular show at guard for Central. Kelly, last year's MAC player of the year, had 35 points on 11-of-16 shooting and 5-of-6 three-pointers. Davis made 11-of-18 and also had five 3-pointers on her way to 32 points.

Kent State will try to end its two-game losing streak in a 1 p.m. Wednesday game at 10th-place Western Michigan.

The game is on ESPN+ on Internet radio on the Kent State Radio Network. Links to both are on the blog at https://wbbFlashes.com.

Kent State is tied for fourth in the Mid-American Conference with a 6-3 record (7-5 overall). The Flashes are 2-3 since returning from a 25-day COVID-19 layoff in January. They have played five games in 11 days, including splitting a pair of overtime games. On Saturday, KSU came from 21 points down to tie Central Michigan in the fourth quarter but fell 84-71.

Western Michigan is 2-12 and tied with Akron for 10th in the MAC. Overall the Broncos are 3-13.

Western’s Taylor Williams, a 6-2 freshman, averages 12.6 points and 10.0 rebounds a game for Western. She had 30 points and 21 rebounds in WMU’s 74-66 win over Akron Saturday. Guard Sydney Shafer leads the Broncos in scoring at 14.3 points per game.

Kent State’s Nila Blackford averages a double-double of her own — 15.8 points and 10.7 rebounds. Both numbers lead the Flashes.

RE: Women's basketball 2020-21
The third quarter, when Kent State only scored five points on five free throws, was the worst I've ever seen the team play since its opening 103-47 loss at Ohio State.

Western outscored KSU 21-5 in the third quarter. Kent State missed all 10 of its shots and 7-of-12 free throws. The KSU got within 12 in the fourth quarter, but it was never close.

The Flashes drop to 6-4 in the MAC and are in a three-way tie with Ball State and Eastern Michigan for sixth with a .600 winning percentage. Western is 3-12 in the MAC and 4-13 overall.

Nila Blackford led KSU with 14 points and 12 rebounds — her ninth double-double in 10 MAC games.

Story is on the blog at https://wbbFlashes.com. It includes updated MAC standings. Bowling Green beat third-place Central Michigan 76-67 to tighten its hold on first place.

RE: Women's basketball 2020-21
The KSU women play unusual back-to-back, Saturday-Sunday games at Northern Illinois this weekend to make up for two games postponed during KSU's COVID-19 outbreak in January.

The Flashes are playing their seventh and eighth games in 19 days since returning to action. Illinois has played only one game in two weeks because of COVID problems at Eastern Michigan and Ohio.

NIU is the hottest team in the MAC, having won five straight and nine of their last 10 games. The Huskies are second in the league at 9-3. First-place Bowling Green is 12-3.

Kent State is 6-4 and tied for sixth, but the Flashes have lost three in a row. They're 2-4 since they returned from the COVID layoff. Before it, they were 4-0 and in first place in the MAC.

Northern is led by guard Chelby Koker, who is fifth in the MAC in scoring at 21.0 points per game. She leads the conference in free-throw percentage. Forward A’Jah David had 17 points and 19 rebounds in NIU’s 76-63 win at Buffalo Wednesday.

RE: Women's basketball 2020-21
The women broke their three-game losing streak and Northern Illinois' five-game winning streak with a 69-65 win in DeKalb.

The victory means Kent State is 7-4 and alone in sixth place in the MAC. NIU is in second. But the second and eighth place teams are only two games apart in standings.

Flashes won with a 25-16 fourth quarter in which they made 9-of-14 shots and 4-of-5 three-pointers. For the game, they held NIU 11 points below its scoring average and to 4-of-15 three-pointers. Northern leads the league in 3-point percentage and averages nine 3s a game.

Nila Blackford just missed her 10th double-double of MAC season with 19 points and 9 rebounds, including 7 offensive rebounds. Lindsey Thall had 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Flashes had season highs in points off turnovers (25), blocked shots (9) and steals (11).

The teams play against at 2 p.m. Sunday on ESPN3 in what I think is an unprecedented MAC weekend double header. Games make up for two postponed in January because of COVID-19.
