The women play at Eastern Michigan at noon Saturday in their first game of 2021. The game is on ESPN+.

The teams were last supposed to play in the MAC semifinals last March, but the season was canceled the day before the game.

Kent State is 3-2 on the season and tied for first place in the MAC with Bowling Green, Buffalo and Central Michigan at 2-0. Eastern is 4-3 and 1-1 in the league.

Eastern guard Areanna Combs averages 18.1 points a game. Post player Ce'Nara Skanes, a 6-foot transfer from Florida International, averages 17.6 points and 10 rebounds. She had a school-record 23 rebounds against Tarleton in the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic.

6-2 sophomore forward Nila Blackford leads Kent State in scoring (14.6 points per game) and rebounding (9.4). Her rebounding average is second to Skanes in the MAC.

The women stayed undefeated and in a first-place tie the MAC with a 67-61 win at Eastern Michigan.

The Flashes are 3-0 in the league and 4-2 overall. All three of their MAC wins have come against teams with a good chance to finish in the league's first division. Wins against Toledo and Eastern (1-2, 4-4) came on the road.

Nila Blackford had her third double-double in three MAC games with 14 points and 13 rebounds. She's now averaging a double-double on the season.

KSU made eight of 15 3-point attempts, the third time in four games the team has shot above 50% from behind the arc. The Flashes held Eastern to 32% shooting, their best defensive performance of the season.

Mariah Modkins had a career-high 16 points. Clare Kelly, making her first start of the season, had 12, and Linsey Marchese had a career-high 10 points.

Coach Todd Starkey has tested positive for COVID-19, which led to the postponement of Kent State's Wednesday game against Northern Illinois.

The MAC announced the postponement of the game about noon; Allen Moff of the Record-Courier reported Starkey's illness Tuesday evening.

Moff's story said no other coach or player had tested positive.

KSU's game with Ball State at noon Saturday is still on. Associate head coach Fran Recchia will run the team.

The women are back in action at noon Saturday against Ball State. The game is at the M.A.C. Center, though no fans are allowed. It's on ESPN+.

Ball State, picked third in the MAC this season, is 4-4 and 2-2 in the conference. A week ago, the Cardinals lost to Bowling Green by 34 points in Muncie. On Wednesday they beat Toledo, which had lost only to Kent State, by 17.

Oshlynn Brown, Ball State's all-conference forward, missed the first four games of the season but has had double-doubles in the last three games.

Kent State is 4-2 and 3-0 in the MAC. That puts the Flashes in fourth place. BG, Central Michigan and Buffalo are at 4-0. Kent State has played on fewer conference game; Wednesday's game against Northern Illinois was postponed after KSU coach Todd Starkey tested positive for COVID-19.

Associate head coach Fran Recchia will run the team on Saturday.

Full preview is on the blog at https://wbbFlashes.com. It includes a statistical comparison between the two teams, in case you're a numbers junkie like me.

The women went to 4-0 in the MAC and won their fifth straight game, 70-61 over Ball State (2-3 MAC, 4-5 overall).

The victory leaves Kent State alone in second place in the MAC, a half game behind Central Michigan (5-0, 7-2), which beat Buffalo (4-1, 7-3) 79-63 in Buffalo. Bowling Green (4-1, 8-2) lost at home to to Northern Illinois (2-2, 4-5).

The Flashes are 5-2 overall.

Nila Blackford had her fourth double-double in four MAC games with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Junior Hannah Young and freshman Casey Santoro each had 12 off the bench. Young also had seven rebounds as the Flashes beat Ball State on the boards 43-33.

Santoro took over at point guard halfway through the second quarter when Mariah hurt her knee in a collision with a BSU player. Kent State outscored Ball State 49-39 when Santoro was running the team. Modkins' injury doesn't seem to be serious; the BSU player left the M.A.C.C. on crutches.

Fran Recchia got her first win as acting head coach. Todd Starkey missed the game — his first in 21 years of coaching — after he tested positive for COVID-19 early in the week.

Full story, including quotes from Recchia and Blackford, is on the blog at https://wbbFlashes.com.

RE: Women's basketball 2020-21
The women's two games this week have been postponed because of COVID-19. Practice and other team activities have been suspended.

The Flashes had been scheduled to play at Akron Wednesday and to host Western Michigan on Saturday.

It’s KSU’s third game in the last two weeks postponed because of COVID-19. Last week’s game in Kent against Northern Illinois wasn’t played after coach Todd Starkey tested positive for COVID. No other players or coaches had tested positive at that time. The team played and beat Ball State Saturday.

A KSU statement said team activities had been canceled “following COVID-19 protocols.” It didn’t say whether any individual had the virus.

The statement said the Mid-American Conference was working to reschedule the games, but there's only one bye date on KSU's schedule. Otherwise, games would be made up by playing three games in a week or canceled altogether.

The Flashes are 4-0 and in second place in the MAC.

A story with a few more detailed is on the blog at https://wbbFlashes.com.

They must be closing in on herd immunity. Either our protocols are very tough or they are awfully unlucky.

Virginia women’s team just threw in the towel. They have been locked down since 12/13 and are 0-5 on the season. ESPN speculated that since they had little or no chance to make the tournament that the effort wasn’t worth it.

San Jose St also shut down, mainly because of the restrictions on Santa Clara county

RE: Women's basketball 2020-21
Kent State's Wednesday game against Toledo was postponed.

It's expected. Quarantine last 10 to 14 days, and Wednesday will be nine or 10 days. Next game is scheduled to be at Northern Illinois Saturday. NIU lost its first two MAC games, then has won four in a row, including beating previously undefeated Bowling Green and Central Michigan.

Kent State is the only undefeated team left in the MAC at 4-0. Buffalo is 5-1; everyone else has lost at least two.

I'm trying to figure out how the league standings will work if teams don't play the same number of games. I suspect it would be like football, where they went by winning percentage if teams played a minimum number of games. To qualify for the NCAA Tournament, a team has to play at least 13 games (half of the maximum 25). If MAC did the same thing, that would be 10. Of course they can always change the rules. (See Ohio State football.)

Vanderbilt canceled its season today. That's three Power 5 teams -- Duke, Virginia and Vanderbilt. Plus San Jose State and Dixie State.

Dixie State?? I guess they will let anyone into Division I.
