Worst season for a power conference ever?

I was at Illinois that year. We played Michigan State in the season finale at home where the winner went to the Holiday Bowl and the loser went home.

I went to the Homecoming game that year! Wish I didn't! Illinois was up 26-6 and Northwestern scored 3 TD's to win the game! That's when Northwestern sucked and everyone scheduled them for Homecoming so when you lose to them you want to quit your season.

It was a different era scheduling wise. For example,, Iowa's 4 OOC opponents were

North Carolina State
#1 Miami-FL
Iowa State
#10 Colorado.

IF iowa would have scheduled their typical ooc schedule like they have the last 2 decade, they would have had 2 meaningless wins against an FCS team and a MAC team. Iowa is more likely now to play Miami-Ohio instead of Miami-FL

Instead of beating up 1992 Big Ten for having a losing record, you should be celebrating a time when major conferences didn't all have these ridiculous cream puff schedules that have now. The OOC schedules that Big Ten teams play now are ridiculously pathetic.

RE: Worst season for a power conference ever?
I'll follow up on goofus's comment. The following year (1993), Illinois was probably better than 1992. They beat Northwestern for Homecoming (not sure why they got to play Northwestern two straight years in a row at home). They stunned Michigan at Michigan. At one point they won four Big Ten games in a row and we were thinking of the ROSE Bowl. I was at a game they won (every year I was there I went to one game). But Illinois lost their last two games and didn't go to a bowl. They finished 5-3 in the Big Ten but 0-3 outside of it (at Missouri, Arizona, Oregon). No FCS games, no cupcakes. If Illinois scheduled one cupcake, they go to a bowl. It was also before the days when everyone played 12 games as well. It's harder to win 6 games when you only play 11 vs. when you play 12. That was the only year out of the four Illinois didn't go to a bowl when I was there. Compared to Illinois football today, that seems like a golden era of Illinois football to make a bowl three out of four years! We also made the men's basketball tournament three out of four years! Now we haven't made the tournament since 2013!

They were still pretty bad that year. When I saw the title of the thread, I immediately thought of the Big 10. Didn't remember the exact year off the top of my head, but I knew it was early 90s.

RE: Worst season for a power conference ever?
I remember the reason TCU played in the Sun Bowl in 1998 was because the Big Ten didn’t have eligible teams with winning records. It used to be Pac-10 #3 vs Big Ten #5. Yes, there was a time the Big Ten only had four eligible bowl teams which would be unthinkable now. The addition of the 12th game in the mid 00’s helped the power programs to schedule an extra game vs the non power programs and FCS to pad those records.

PSU joined the BIG the following year. The BIG quickly turned-around and re-established as the strongest football conference. I was really disappointed that PSU didn’t get a chance to play for the national championship in ’94. Then the 1995 was another great year for BIG football.

The weakest power conference season was likely the 1997 Big East. Miami had its only losing season in the decade...I believe it was on probation and Butch Davis was in full rebuild mode. Rutgers was winless and actually made Temple look decent. Big East made four bowl games...and lost them all. Even VT had a comparatively down-year in the middle of a great run in the 1990s.
