That beautiful cartoon 2.5 years about about Barbara Bush was the inspiration for my own little attempt just now about Justice Ginsburg:

Very nice, George. You’re a Mensch.

Early on when I started doing the webpage, I wanted to get some kind of permission to use the John Churchill Chase cartoons for game week cartoons and so on. I remembered as a little boy going to Rice Stadium And being Enthralled with the Chase cartoons on the program faces. So I finally managed to get ahold of his daughter, who by mail informed me that, as long as I never use them in connection with any money making activities, it was OK by the family. That was good enough for me. Totally charmed by your story about taking a class from Chase when you were a little guy. I think he taught you well.

Thank you, kind sir! I've been called a mensch many times -- as well as other Yiddish terms, which I assume are equally complimentary. 03-wink.

Chase was about 70 years old when I took that class from him. Years later as a Rice young alum I remember discovering that he had done some Rice program covers, but I had forgotten about that until you mentioned it -- thanks bringing that back. Chase clearly influenced Rice's longtime artist Charles Straub.

I'm curious: is the daughter you spoke of still in New Orleans?

Here is an article with some wonderful examples of Chase's cartoons:

And a terrific article about Chase and several other influential New Orleans cartoonists, by the New Orleans Bar Association: https://www.neworleansbar.org/uploads/fi..._16_17.pdf
