RE: ***Official Navy at Tulane Game Thread***
The Navy offense depends more on execution than on having superior athletes. The futility in the first 3 halves of this season shows how important spring practice & a full preseason are.

When Morris started hitting passes, the Tulane defense loosened up, opening up Navy's running game. I was surprised that Morris was named the starter over Olsen last week, having entered the season #3 on the depth chart with almost no previous game experience, as a Sr. I wondered what he did to win the starter's job during no contact practices. Now we know -- leadership & passing. Olsen's departure shows the coaches confidence in Morris, even though Arline started.

Listening to Ken's interviews, you almost got the feeling he thought it might be a mistake to play this season & he wished he had Air Force's schedule.
He's been suffering. I'm happy for him. The importance of this win for Navy can't be overstated.

Tulane looks good, bit of a collapse though. Not quite got it all together yet.

I looked at the bolded comment, and then I looked at 7/12 for 146, and I thought "That's about what we should have every game."

2019:
We had six games over 100 yards passing, with similar lines 6/9 for 103, 6/8 for 153, 6/8 for 162 etc. A seventh game, the Liberty Bowl was 6/9 for 98. We had five games with fewer than 8 passing attempts, and averaged 414.4 rushing yards in those games.

2019 passing totals: 55/104, 1,238 yards, 95.2 ypg
2018 passing totals: 54/127, 947 yards, 72.8 ypg
2017 passing totals: 42/102, 1005 yards, 77.3 ypg
2016 passing totals: 93/158, 1794 yards, 128.1 ypg
2015 passing totals: 64/122, 1280 yards, 98.5 ypg

Let's say, 91 ypg or more and we should expect to go 7-1 in the AAC.

Tulane's 330 lbs nose guard who was gassed by the 3rd Q, opening up the middle for Navy FB's.
Tulane's alligator armed receivers & QB who got rattled by Navy's blitzing LB's.

That's worth drilling down.

We knew that 330-pounder was there, and that's why we shuffled the line - moved 301 pound Banbury to center and Self over to the left side. Remember multiple high snaps early on with Arline in shotgun? So moving to Morris, more under center snaps, just the new center settling down... makes a difference from 1st quarter to 3rd quarter.
And we were definitely double teaming that NG early too. More than once, I saw on replay that the guy blowing up the play was able to do so because of the doubling. I don't know that we specifically stopped doing that (I do know Ivin told his daughter that the halftime speech was "we're just going to run our base stuff"), but yeah, one way or another he got gassed or accounted for and the fullback game started to deliver.
Tulane also has two NFL level talents on the edge, whose names I only heard called a few times. In our base the DE is most likely the first guy being "optioned" - that is, the DE is left unblocked and the read is dependent on what he does. If you get the reads right, then the DE isn't much of a factor. You can gameplan to have the majority of plays make a dominant player the guy optioned - with Manti Te'o that was the idea, and one year it worked out okay and the next year he blew up everything anyway. To my knowledge there have only been two defensive guys that the whole offensive game plan was designed around: Aaron Donald (I have it on good authority that the game plan was to call plays where he wasn't) and Ed Oliver.

Anyway, sometimes it's a little more complex/nuanced than "you switched quarterbacks."

SLH,
What’s your recollection of the 2011 game vs USC and Jadeveon Clowney? It’s been a while, but I thought we specifically ran away from him.

Sigh.

Our fan base is in full blown SEC meltdown mode. What isn't helping is that the media is absolutely leaning into it so far this week. A number of us want Fritz's head and are expecting something like a 2-9 finish. It's starting to feel like a horrifying overreaction to one game. A 3 point loss to Navy in the COVID season is not going to end what Tulane is building.

Had we played the FCS game, we'd be at 2-1 with a real shot at 3-1 come next Saturday. Fix the QB play, and the rest will slowly come together.

The USM game is now huge.

SLH,
What’s your recollection of the 2011 game vs USC and Jadeveon Clowney? It’s been a while, but I thought we specifically ran away from him.

It was the third game of his freshman year. Already an impressive talent. No shame in calling plays away from him, but I don't think we planned the whole game plan around him.
Niumat and Jasper HAVE talked about doing so for Donald and Oliver. And before that '18 Houston game I had the opportunity to ask a player on the offense against Aaron Donald and he confirmed it.

We're all rusty this season given the conditions.

When Navy gets in a bind in a Triangle Choke, and then all in good rythm and warmed up with the Triple Option.

Click through to the video.

Then turn the volume up for Navy play by play Pete Medhurst, inspiration from Coach Niumat, and more.
