Let me state my overwhelming ignorance on Tigers and the laws that govern and protect them.

So why do an autopsy; I don't know. I can't imagine there is a governing body that would require an autopsy. I would have guessed this is a private effort that Scott has agreed to. The reason i would guess is scientific? Certainly the facts presented here don't point to something criminal or illegal. Do they?

I think highly of Mr. Foreman and appreciate his effort here. Taking care of Tom was a significant Time and Financial commitment. Scott has made his statement. It is good enough for me. Tom was a big part of his life, I don't think posts that challenge the care given Tom are fair or reasonable based on the fact pattern today.

You think because I would like to know what killed him that I’m challenging his care? Ironically enough, my own cat just died a couple days before after a torturous downhill path — during which I was mostly powerless

I challenge nothing and no one. I just wanna know what killed him and why we can’t get another tiger to take care of. No matter what killed Tom, I blame no one

Cause of death is just for future information. We used to think a rat bite caused the bubonic plague but turns out it was mostly spread through the bite of an infected flea

I want another Tiger for a mascot. They have all been well taken care of. Got to be better than living with Carole Baskin or the tiger king.

TOM is getting an autopsy done at the Memphis Zoo.

This isn't some conspiracy. I'm sure any cause of death would result in him having an autopsy.

Its just very sad they don’t know what killed hiM
It means they were probably at a loss to stop his demise. It’s an awful awful place to be— especially for such a magnificent beautiful Tiger. I feel bad for them.

You've mentioned conspiracy twice. Nobody else has.

I think all legal and certified exotic animals in captivity go to a zoo when they die.

I'm curious as to what the autopsy reveals.

Something just doesn't add up to me.

You might want to look up the definition for conspiracy. I don't think you know what if means.

RE: Tom III passes away
Anybody have any legit estimate on the annual cost to feed and cate for TOM? I’m sure food and upkeep on his home were extraordinary.

With the financial uncertainty the UofM and Tiger athletics is facing now, I’m not at all surprised if the Highland Hundred and university think that the financial support currently going towards TOM could be put to better use elsewhere. I know it’s all donated money but those donations could provide significant support to other areas of need within the football program assuming many of the donors would continue to give for those other needs.

Still a shame to see this wonderful tradition end.

U of Memphis does not cover a dime of his upkeep. A special group from the HH takes care of TOM.

I too want to know what killed him. It wasn't that long ago that he had a check-up and was given a clean bill of health. He just took ill for some reason and there was a need to find out. Have to wonder if he had any no legged visitors in his compound.

Looks pretty definitive to me.

Sad to hear it, but I can think of no better source on the future of TOM.

I have absolutely no trouble believing Scott when he said a part of him died....The loss of his Tiger child friend must be almost beyond bearable... I really feel for him and admire his fortitude.

But now I'm more confused. How is wanting/wishing the Tom tradition to continue dividing us, and distracting us from our team... Are people on other social media platforms going nutso or something?

I don't know what's happening on other social media, but even in this thread you have people urging fans to besiege the AD with phone calls and e-mails to reconsider the TOM decision.

What I get from Scott's message on Facebook is:

"The decision is made. I'm not doing this any more myself. Please don't stir up a lot of controversy by second-guessing this move."

I enjoyed having the TOM's represent the University, but I'm totally willing to accept this decision and move on.

Agree.

Fond memories of all our Toms. They are all missed and will be until those of us alive during their proud years of service are gone.

Thank you Scott for all your years of taking care of Tom III. I cannot imagine your pain and sorrow.

Oh you sweet summer child.

Between the rest of what 2020 has brought us, and now TOM's demise, people have absolutely lost their minds on UofM fb groups.

Ike can appreciate Scott's feelings. Ike has two large dogs and the care feeding ect. is quite a responsibility,
A responsibility Ike gladly embraces but He cannot imagine what goes into caring for a cat like TOM.
Ike still remains hopeful that Memphis will continue the tradition with Tom IV. Ike will gladly pledge money for the purchase and upkeep of our TOM, Ike is sure others will also contribute.
GTG. GO TOM GO

Ike misses Scott's point.

There will not be another Scott for TOM IV, therefore there will not be a TOM IV.

Sad, but looks to be a closed deal, and one that was decided years before TOM III died. So much for your street.

We are so very fortunate that Scott Forman came along and put twenty years into this, and fortunate to have had the donors that made it happen. We were the last school to have a live tiger mascot present at football games. I understand why this is no longer doable. The lone live tiger mascot remaining is at LSU. The habitat is on campus and the tiger never leaves that habitat. They’re trying to have it become an accredited sanctuary. Care is provided by the LSU veterinary school. We have none of these options. Thanks for the memories.
