Actually, the conferences are ONLY about sports. They have no control over any other aspect of the member universities. I know that people like to sell this argument, but I just don't buy it. Each conference has some stellar academic members...and some that aren't necessarily the top of the heap. As an example, the predecessor to the AAC, Big East Football. Once upon a time they expelled Temple, a pretty good school, from the conference because they sucked so bad at football. Clearly academics played no part in that decision. Like others around here, I find it funny that some turn their nose up at the SBC. I would like to be in the AAC, but I don't think we need to act like anybody owes us anything.

Temple was kicked out because they didn’t honor their agreement to invest in athletics

So you agree with me that the decision was based entirely on athletics, and not any other factors like academics or what have you. Got it.

If conferences only care about sports and nothing else why isn’t Liberty in an athletic conference for football

So, your argument that conferences are about more than sports is "Liberty is an independent in football." Okay, watch this. Notre Dame is an independent in football. It is equally as true, and equally as irrelevant.

Why is Rice in CUSA? They are far superior academically to everyone else in CUSA....or the AAC.

This is exactly my point. They're in C-USA because that's the best they can do with their athletics. How good of a school they are doesn't matter. The same applies to us- we might be a great university, but in order to make it to a better conference we have to show we belong, athletically. I think we're making progress, but we aren't there yet. Football has improved on the field, and in facilities, but we haven't really broken out. Basketball has been down. And those are the two sports that really matter in all this.

You're right. Let's argue about a virus for a while. That's much better...

Yup. We were reinvesting football monies into basketball. A lot has changed.
