If I understand correctly, he's not positing a 5-1-2 CFP, just the existing 4-team CFP. BYU wouldn't qualify for the G5 spot under that either, and I see it he has Boise in the G5 spot meaning BYU would be getting an at-large spot.

But you raise an interesting question: If the playoffs are expanded to 5-1-2, with a guaranteed spot for the G5 in the playoffs, would there also be a guaranteed G5 spot in the remaining major bowls?

I would think not. The P5 would not want to give the G5 two spots among the major bowls/playoffs.

Agreed.

Georgia passing Alabama for the 4th spot may have been controversial; the two teams were 1-1 against each other, Georgia won the conference yet lost an additional game to Kentucky. The committee went with Georgia based off perceived relative strength (the Bulldogs had just won, and looked better against most common opponents).

IMO, if the results turn out as you indicate, Alabama would get the 4th playoff spot over Penn State. The playoffs would be Clemson, Utah, Georgia, and Alabama.

They're not going to put a Penn State team in with the same number of losses and two less wins over an Alabama team that beat Georgia, one of the playoff teams, B10 champs or not.

Hadn't thought of Penn State falling outside the Top 4. PSU's MOV was 18 (playing the top 3 teams from the West, too) while Alabama's was only 12. That, combined with the "P5 Champ" label, keeps the Nittany Lions above the Crimson Tide.

With so few OOC games, the computer committee has a difficult time giving weight to labels like "SEC" and "Alabama". How should a 7-0 MAC team be compared to a 7-0 Pac-12 team??? One of the tools they DO have is analyzing the interior stratification/parity within a conference.

In this particular simulation, only Georgia and Alabama completed their SEC schedule outside a 30%-70% conference winning percentage (and only A&M hit 7-3). In contrast, only NC State and Florida State finished inside that window within the ACC standings. The high stratification within the ACC means each team (note 8-3 Miami was #6) played 3-5 Top 25 teams while in the SEC, outside of Alabama and Georgia, everyone played a mess of mediocre 5-5 teams.

Now, in a year where 4 or 5 SEC teams finish with 2 or fewer losses, there will be enough Top 25 W's where 2 could make the playoff; but in Sim #131, there is room for only 1.

We're both just speculating here on how the committee will evaluate things, but I'm not convinced the committee will use your logic about internal stratification. Absent contact with external teams, which neither the B1G or SEC will have, internal parity doesn't tell us anything about how a conference compares externally. If the SEC has 12 teams that are all as good as the 1995 Huskers or 2001 Miami, then they will all probably end up 6-5 and 5-6. But that doesn't mean they are a "mass of mediocrity" in comparison to other conferences that have teams at 11-0, 10-1 and 9-2, all of whom might be no better than this year's USF or ECU teams but have eaten up a bunch of teams that are even worse.

The upshot is, internal parity, when there are no OOC games, just means that all the teams in the conference are at the same level. It doesn't tell us whether they are all at a very high level or a very low level as compared to the level of another conference. We just don't know, and so I do not think the committee would make an assumption either way.

Therefore, in this case, I think the decisive factors would be that (a) Alabama has two more wins than PSU, and (b) their best win is better than PSU's best win, and their loss is better than PSU's loss. The only thing PSU would have is the P5-champ label, and I don't think that will be nearly enough.

Just my take .... 07-coffee3
