Marshall played Ohio State in 2004 a 24-21 loss, lost on a 55 yard FG from Mike Nugent with .02 on the clock. The game was on ABC.

I knew in 1988 when Joan C Edwards stadium was proposed that we would be going IA soon, the stadium opened in 1991 and we were in the MAC in 1997.

At the time we jumped I thought the next 2 programs to jump would be McNeese State and Appy State. At the time McNeese was on fire now they are a middle of the pack team in a bloated Southland conference. It took Appy and GA Southern 17 years after Marshall but they eventually took the leap.

I may be in the minority, but I'm glad we jumped up when we did rather than in the 90's. The Miracle on the Mountain, the three FCS titles, the Michigan game--none would have happened if App moved up when Marshall did. Even if we had beaten Michigan as an FBS team, it wouldn't have been as super historic or impactful. Heck, App might have overlooked a QB like Armanti Edward's as an FBS program, so we might have never had The Great One.

By the time App left, there was no unfinished business left. The move up has been an indisputable success.

Don't take what I'm about to say here wrong. I get what you're saying and I enjoyed each of those things you mentioned as much as anyone, but who knows what could have been had we remained 1-A. When word of 1-AA began gaining steam in the mid 70's App's administration was firmly in the we want to remain at the highest level camp. We were on par with ECU from a football standpoint, attendance was booming and donations were flowing into the program. When Chancellor Wey, the guy who was driving the train, retired in 1979 all that came to a screeching halt. We got Mr Not Motivated, Do Nothing John Tomas. He pulled back the reins and stopped all the momentum dead in it's tracks. The stadium which was supposed to have been 30,000 seats wound up 18K. Vice Chancellor Bob Sneed was all about keeping App a small mountain teacher training school and put in charge of fundraising. The Yosef Club was hit with unbelievable restrictions and people eventually lost interest. We were basically in the doldrums until Ken Peacock arrived on the scene then 2005, 06, 07 and MOST importantly Michigan happened.

I honestly feel if this fumble did not happen in the semi's v Furman in 2005, we are not where we are today. This started the whole run in the 2000's.

No use wondering what things would have been different if we stuck with ECU in the '70s or Marshall in '90s or WCU in the '10s. Things are where they are because things happened the way they did and it's been a great ride so far.

This all makes total sense. I think the viewpoints differ based on the starts of when our individual fandoms of our alma mater were. I was a freshman 20 years ago right now. 1-AA with no Michigan game and no national titles was where App State football history began for me. But from your perspective, I can definitely see why a much earlier move up (or never moving down in the first place) would have been preferred.

I didn't know Appalachian was on track for a 30,000 seat stadium as long as 40 years ago. I'd have been frustrated with the leadership in that era, too. 04-cheers

This is great for both schools. Let's hope for a great game and App winning it. Maybe CBS is see how non SEC football works on their main channel instead of CBSSports.

I honestly feel if this fumble did not happen in the semi's v Furman in 2005, we are not where we are today. This started the whole run in the 2000's.

If Martin doesn't slip at the 1 yard line that fumble would't have made any difference and we don't win the NC #1. Had Mickey Matthews not gone completely brain dead with 22 seconds left giving the ball to a true freshman inside the 10 instead of kicking the chip shot FG we don't win #3. We can "what if" this to death, but one thing you really can not say with certainty is that we were better off because we stayed 1-AA/FCS. Prior to 2005 it sure didn't look like had been a good move. Yea we had been ranked a bunch of times and won a lot of games in the SoCo. However, most people tend to forget before '05 our playoff record was 4 games under .500 (8-12 / 6-10 under Jerry Moore) and we had only made it to the semi-finals two times in 22 years. Then to not make the playoffs in "03 & '04 losing to terrible Western team to end '04 things were not looking very promising. It all worked out and I'm thankful for it, but there's always been that part in the back of my mind that wonders where could we be had we been more proactive in the 80's.

Is Marshall not in CUSA? Am I missing something? I get what your saying but they are choosing one team from CUSA

focus on the marketz not choosen, not the conferences.

CBS/all stations choose the teams that will get the most eyeballs, they don't give a damn what city they're located in.

The original poster said “cbs didn’t choose one of the markets from CUSA for national coverage”. CBS chose App @ Marshall for national coverage which involves a home game of a CUSA school/market.

Maybe I should have been more clear. CBS didn't choose one of the bigger market schools that C-USA invited more because of market size and "potential" than actual results. CBS instead chose a school from little market Huntington and small town Boone. They didn't choose to air a school from the Miami area, Charlotte, Norfolk, Nashville area, Birmingham, Dallas area, Houston, San Antonio, or El Paso.

I didn't put it that way initially because I thought being concise and simple would be funnier and because I was being a smart aleck.

I have the original letter and postcard with the stadium rendering on it. There were billboards on 321 & 421 with the caption "We've Outgrown Our Stadium, But Coming Soon"... with a picture of the stadium. Those were some exciting times.

That’s something I’d like to see. I didn’t know anything about App football until I got to Boone in 2002. All I’d ever heard was App State was the best FCS program to never win a national title before that. Amazing how far we’ve come in only my 18 years following the program.

To further your point, CBS chose two teams from smaller towns over two teams (SMU and NT) in the Dallas market.

It is stunning to see the difference between the town where App State is located and where Clemson is located. Even the student population size is way off. (Not really)

Students: Clemson: ~25,000 | App State: ~20,000
Location Population: Clemson, SC: 17,102 | Boone, NC: 19,562
Closest Airport: Clemson: Greenville (45 minutes away) | App State: Tri-Cities Regional (45 minutes away)
Clemson: Small rural town in SC | App State: Small rural town in NC
National Rank: Clemson #1 | App State #24

If you are saying your market is what makes and defines you, you are destined to fail.

DISCLAIMER: Please check my math, my google skills may have failed me.

Just a couple mountain towns that know how to play football.

Quality over Quantity, what a concept! 04-cheers

Seems like a smart way to build a conference...

Agreed! But what does common sense mean this day and age? LOL

Inside baseball - Tudor’s Biscuits is a regional franchise on a popularity scale of, say ComeBack Shack in Boone. Awesome combos and huge biscuits! Coach Clark knows Tudors! [/quote]

Agreed on premium kickoff time. With all of the pent-up demand to see live sports, it should reach a ton of TV sets! And, as a bonus - fans in the stands!!! Both schools will be well-represented. I said earlier that I knew App would travel.....

Earlier ? about being on broadcast TV. The only time I remember being on CBS was the 1992 Natty Championship vs Youngstown St. Never on NBC or ABC as far as I can remember.....

We played Ohio State on ABC back in 2004.

I've eaten at a Tudor's Biscuit World - it's suprising gly decent. There is one in every sizable small town in central WV. Rather than Boone's Comeback Shack, it is more comparable (for App people anyway) to central NC chain Biscuitville in both market reach and menu selection/quality.

Attn App fans: UNCC just canceled their game against UNC due to COVID positives on the team. It’s weird how games are being canceled or postponed and is not even really effecting anything. We all just accept that it is happening and move on.

Per Coach Clark, App tested Sunday and Tuesday this week with 0 cases. I would imagine they are testing today or tomorrow too. Fingers crossed.

Listened in on Coach Clarks presser. So, like most all teams that travel to Huntington (whether by air or land), y'all are driving to Charleston Friday. Stay over night & bus into town Sat a.m. Just curious: When you have teams coming into KBS, where do they stay?
