If NIU goes FCS I'm done, just saying.
+1000- just would not be able to muster enthusiasm for less that FBS.
It would be pretty sad.

I agree but the MAC is the bottom rung in FBS. It’s a bottom feeder conference and at some point you have to wonder if they should stop the charade as they continue to fall further behind other FBS conferences.

I have no interest in watching NIU play football on a Tuesday night in February and the official MAC statement on continuing to sit so a “meaningful experience” can occur in the spring is beyond comical when almost every other conference is playing meaningful football now.

NIU is missing $1.5 million in OOC money. This is a lot of money. Many schools are testing twice a week to find out students are asymptotic or mild cases. We are in a pandemic paranoia. We need to protect old, obese and immune compromised. Those are ones at risk. If YOU feel afraid to contract, stay home and don’t allow people over. Washing hands, sanitizing surfaces, social distancing, not touching face and wearing mask will reduce YOUR chances greatly.

I have good friends in Montana that attended Montana and Montana State. They prefer FCS because they can legitimately compete for a national championship and they do not want to cling to the bottom rungs of the FBS. They are passionate about their sports. It's not all bad.

That's one way to get out of that ESPN contract!

I would still support the Huskies with season tickets and donations.

100% correct.

I can see having postponed the season but the MAC should follow the rest of FBS and have a truncated season starting in October. It's definitely doable; other conferences are doing it and seem to be thriving. Spring football, followed by a regular fall season, doesn't seem viable.

It's a moot point, the MAC isn't playing this fall. Ridiculous.

They left "already" out of the end of the quote.
There were no hospitalizations or myocarditis detected. LSU is ready for the season opener.

I'm gone as well if NIU ever dropped to FCS (assume thats crazy unlikely).

You'd lose alumni support (quite a bit of $ and intangibles), less big money games, and you still wake up to a great deal of football expenses regardless. No thanks to that.

I hope you're correct that it's unlikely. NIU, and the entire state of Illinois, have been on a slow decline for about 10 years now.
Illinois has a net decline of over 150K people in the last 5 years.
We know that fiscally the state is a basket case.

Hopefully NIU is repositioning itself to stay relevant, and it's proximity to the Chicago metro area may be a saving grace. I hope that the Facebook data center will provide some kind of spark to the DeKalb area, and NIU in particular.

In the meantime, I worry about the state of the football program.

"As we move into October and November, into what the experts say will be our worst days as COVID combines with the flu, the stops and starts of the conferences that are trying to play now tell us there are likely to be postponements and perhaps cancellations of Big Ten games.

Maybe some teams will get through a full season. Perhaps others will have to stop after a game or two, or miss games in the middle. Hopefully no one will get sick or spread COVID to others. We’ll see. This is the potential chaos the Big Ten chose when it decided to sell its soul for a few football games."

Edit: Just saw the statement from the MAC office, spring it is.

There was ZERO chance for "paycheck games" because the B1G was only going to have conference games only.

And now the MWC is being “aggressive” to begin playing this fall. MAC will be an afterthought even more so than they are now.

The optics are terrible if the MAC is the only conference refusing to play. The MWC and PAC 12 appear to be full steam ahead on getting a fall plan together. If you are a player at a MAC school and everyone else in FBS is playing while you are sitting I would think the transfer portal will be very active.

The commish does nothing good for the MAC. I’d be very surprised that they even discuss a fall season again.

ESPN will force the MAC to play beginning next month. They are chomping at the bit to showcase the conference to the nation on ESPN3!

Those schools really have no choices for FBS play anyway. The WAC is gone and the only conference that would make sense would be MWC but i doubt the MWC would want any schools in Montana.

Watching NIU play and beat P5 schools in non-conference, play bowl games (in which we've played multiple P5 opponents and even some really good G5's like Boise State and Fresno State), and play in the Orange Bowl (and had a chance to go to another BCS bowl the following season if not for pooping the bed in the MACC) is more exciting to me than playing FCS schools for a championship no one watches or cares about. The reason people know of NIU is because of our FBS football success. Drop down to FCS and no one will hear about us unless we make noise in the NCAAB tournament.
