Like, tomorrow?????

Like when the NCAA makes a decision on whether or not the AAC will have to add another team to continue holding their conference championship game. Right now they have a waiver through the 2021 season and will follow a format similar to the Big 12.

The only way the AAC adds a team is if they are forced to do so.

AAC granted waiver through 2021 season.

You realize that 2021 is next year? NCAA fiscal calendars begin July 1st.

Or two football seasons away. They can still play through the end of the 2021 season and not have made a decision. Not saying they will take that long but the AAC could do that.

Oh, they could and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if they did, but there are other factors mentioned below. I looked back and past realignment announcements were made Feb/Mar before July 1st. And, of course, we have to add in all the behind the scenes stuff (negotiations, legal agreements, TV deals, etc.) which would have to be around 3 months at least.

So that would mean, if the AAC is going to add a team, they could announce this Spring or Spring ‘22, but they have to announce something by the latter date. My personal guess, for whatever that’s worth, I don’t think ESPN is going to let them go thru another season w/out a CCG...I don’t think the AAC wants to either cause that is a TON of money to leave on the table (even if they add another mouth to feed, adding the money from a CCG breaks even at least...and, if it’s a quality basketball add* that can thrive with an AAC schedule, there’s more tourney units from NCAA). That means an announcement in Spring ‘21. So it could be sooner than we think or later, but no later than Spring 2022.

Would BYU now consider the AAC? With all the problem that BYU is having putting an emergency schedule together they might consider it. Otherwise, UAB is the logical choice.

Question without time to look it up. What about timing for lesser exit fees from current conferences? Sometimes that requires a longer than 1 year notice. Does that speed up the timeline for a school to announce in order to join in time for the 2022 season?

UAB should also be sensitive to C-USA members who may feel UAB owes a "gratitude debt" to the conference for being allowed to remain in conference while not playing football for two years. Some of them may feel the Blazers used up any "get out of conference free or cheap card" during the 2015-2017 period.

RE: Sunbelt Conference kicking butt today
CUSA knew that we would return within 6 or so months. The front office had no decision to make. They did not go one season without knowing we were coming back. I agree we should remember those schools that had our back. I hope they will continue to have our back should we move. They certainly would not want UAB voting against them, if they get a later invite or some other realignment starts to move forward. I would hope they all treat their conference mates like they would want to be treated if they get a chance to move on from CUSA.

Interesting notes on the timing. If an invite were to happen it would be great to know where we stand by next summer. All the more reason to have strong football and basketball seasons. Also would be good timing to be debuting the new stadium. Hopefully we can get the basketball practice facility pulled together too.

In regards to winning AND tickets (especially season tickets) and Blazer Booster memberships (starts at $50). Not sure how much in-person attendance is going to be considered this season with COVID restrictions, but we can still buy tickets.

If the recent realignments taught us anything it’s that contracts are made to be broken. And that if you’re good enough to move up the ladder, you likely have the deep pockets to handle exit fees on speed dial already.

But that is why I looked up the timing of recent realignment decisions. Not sure how much they were influenced by not spending fball and bball seasons with a huge bullseye and how much by time constraints. Like I said, I doubt the higher ups are ever caught off guard so the conference losing a member could already have a list of possible replacements.

From what I’ve read, BYU is still not interested & the AAC wants all-sports to get completely out of the NCAA’s “exemptions” and set up divisions. Funny that, after the return, I see UAB near the top of a lot of fans’ lists. As you said, we’re a logical option.

Definitely important. I think we'll see a solid uptick in booster count next year due to a much larger number of football season tickets having a seat donation component. Currently only two sections at LF require a seat donation while 11 sections at Protective Stadium will require a seat donation. Plus the number of suites will increase and the number of club seats will nearly double. Add that to increased demand for basketball season tickets after Kennedy's hiring and we should be in decent shape for getting our booster numbers up by next summer.

Since it's not normal to have to put together an emergency schedule and this season would be considered a one off this would not affect BYU's mindset in regards to staying an independent or joining a conference.

UAB doesn't owe C-USA anything after they brought back Charlotte. We can try to maintain some connection by schedule OOC games with our old pals, but we owe the conference nothing.
