https://www.dailyherald.com/news/2020091...19-warning

So can we assume all practices have been cancelled for two weeks?

Just as well football was cancelled. I was against it at first but it looks like it was the right move.

How so? There have been over 25,000 positive tests on College Campuses with no hospitalizations and no deaths. You were told Covid was deadlier than Flu now it less deadly than a bad Flu. Average age of people passing away from Covid is now 78. You can not wait for a vaccine. You need Herd immunity. The supposed long term effects are panic porn from our Media and Politicians who desperately want to keep the economy closed and limit your freedom. My opinion based in following multiple sources of information offered to counter others. No Trump lover here, but to see what this panic is doing to young people and business owners is just sad. A lot of them will never recover. I think the NIU President and the Governor are making catastrophic errors in judgement.

Obesety, diabetes, age, immune issues major reason for deaths. Numbers mean nothing without context. We originally shut down to give hospitals a fighting chance. 6 months later , know a lot more yet still throwing blanket over whole population. If you are healthy and 14 -30, very little chance of being hospitalized an/or die

RE: NIU goes online.
There are two hard options. Remain open or go online. NIU picked the one that would hurt the least.

What's the worse that could come out of remaining online? Businesses continue to suffer and we lose out a few more college experiences?

You both are right, the chances of COVID killing you are slim. However it's on a national spotlight right now. The worst case scenario for remaining open, is just one kid dying from it. If that happens, NIU faces more public scrutiny (on top of all the challenges they already had) and a lawsuit we know it can't afford. The NIU president will have no choice but to step down if that happens.

Way more suicides and drug overdose deaths due to policies.

They aren't not important and your facts aren't false. But the spotlight isn't on those issues at the moment.

I didn't say that wasn't the case. I said it's in the spotlight right now.

When that happens, someone is going to get in trouble for that. And the public is going to be very unforgiving. For Northern, they can't afford to take that risk when it comes to PR or financial impact.

Not yet, but college students are definitely getting infected and transmitting to others who are dying. With 195,000 deaths, it's hard to believe that tally cannot include some college students who may have had other medical issues which combined with Covid to bring about their death.

But why crater an economy for a few unfortunate deaths? Life is risk.

Because those in charge can let their jobs, ruin a universities reputation, and spend a whole lot of money in legal fees/settlements for a few unfortunate deaths. That's a risk not worth taking...

Stratify this. Vast majority are over 70 with health issues. 60k die a year from flu. I know how to protect myself and still live

For God's sake, what is the number of unacceptable deaths jprender believes to be worth "cratering an economy"?
From Johns Hopkins Medicine (Mar. 17, 2020): Mortality for COVID-19 appears higher than for influenza, especially seasonal influenza. While the true mortality of COVID-19 will take some time to fully understand, the data we have so far indicate that the crude mortality ratio (the number of reported deaths divided by the reported cases) is between 3-4%, the infection mortality rate (the number of reported deaths divided by the number of infections) will be lower. For seasonal influenza, mortality is usually well below 0.1%. However, mortality is to a large extent determined by access to and quality of health care. Speak to anyone who has lost someone significant (grandparent, parent, sibling, other relative, major friend) and they will take a different view.

This is 2020, logic and reason left along time ago. These are facts you present, but the ears have left the building.

Stay safe out there Huskies. Now and to the future.

Depression, suicide, overdose deaths way up. We have 350 million people. Why are you forcing me to stay in. I will take risk. If you are older and/or sick, you should protect yourself. Stay in and away from peopl. 18-24 year olds are not in danger.

There has been no correlation established between depression, suicide, and overdose deaths increasing because the MAC or any other college football league initially decided to postpone, delay, etc.
The problem with this country is the lack of leadership from the top and no nation-wide plan to deal with this from the beginning. EVERYONE should be forced (yes forced) to wear a mask, practice social-distancing, etc.
IF we as a nation had done that back in March through May, this thing would be so limited and virtually contained we could be back to almost normal.
IT IS NOT JUST GOING TO GO AWAY! For God's sake, it's not the difficult -- no shoes, no shirt, no mask, no service. So damn simple.
Why don't you just start running red lights, stop signs, and speed everywhere since you refuse to take responsibility for anyone but yourself.
For the 100th time, 18-24 years are in danger because not enough is known yet about long-term affects. And most importantly, 18-24 year olds are among the worst offenders and have proven to be carriers who can transmit the virus to others even if they are asymptomatic!
