Cal State system remaining online in spring
I feel badly for my nephews - they are attending separate State schools and were hopeful they'd be in person in the spring. But nope, the Cal State system just announced they're online in the spring too. Meanwhile, my daughters' school (Purdue) is doing relatively well and has already announced its (in-person for those who opt for that format) spring schedule. Outside of no Spring Break, they're confident they can continue to be in person this spring (about 80 percent of the Purdue's students are on campus this fall).

I'm really not sure how Fresno State and San Diego State (among others) can expect to play any sports at all this year.

IMO ridiculous to decide this almost four months in advance.

From a planning perspective, it's ridiculous to wait until one month out.

Students need to decide whether to rent by campus or stay home. Leases are often signed many months ahead.

Universities need to put caps on class sizes BEFORE students can register for classes. Spring class registration starts November 4th for SDSU, so class sizes need to be finalized by the last week of October to ensure a smooth rollout. So they need to know modalities by mid-October at the very latest to do a good job with class sizes.

Professors need to start lesson planning. I'm a professor, and I knew Fall teaching schedule by March and my Spring teaching schedule by May. I planned each of my fall classes and prepped my syllabi, then they switched to online classes 2 weeks before the term started. I had to completely rewrite the syllabus and 3/4 of my classwork in 2 weeks. I'm still catching up now, and the two primary results of the rush are a) almost two months with no attention paid to admin tasks such as student recommendation letters or legally required mandatory reports, and b) lower quality online classes than if we had just made the decision to go online in June.

Another note - this also affects hiring decisions. University jobs aren't like your job - every time instructors switch employers, they have to move their families to a different state or country.

Universities open positions about 12-18 months ahead of time, and the job market is mostly closed 6 months before the term. There's usually only a handful of instructors still looking for jobs 3 months before classes start.

My department had a tenured full professor turn in his 2 week notice about 6 weeks before classes started (because he read the tea leaves better than me and thought that the university would switch to online - which he wanted nothing to do with). How do you hire someone to replace him that quickly? We're in a small town; there's no one local who can do it. All the good candidates were taken. We had to list the job, wait for resumes to come in, conduct interviews that comply with diversity mandates, and convince someone to move (likely from over 1000 miles away) within 3-4 weeks or else we'd have to cancel the classes and screw over the students.
