The Big Southwest Conference: Create Your Own Future

Here's something on a little more positive note that hopefully will brighten up your day (or evening). (I'm technology-challenged, and this is my first post ever on any board, so if I did the hyperlink incorrectly, the website is http://www.mockingbirdsports.com, and you can go to the Projects page to view and download the BSW proposal).

I'm not a Rice grad. I'm a Baylor grad with a law degree from UT-Austin. But for several reasons, I have a lot of affection for Rice. So I hope the proposal leads to something better for Rice. And I hope y'all enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

Happy reading!

RE: The Big Southwest Conference: Create Your Own Future
Like the concept. I have proposed something similar, with a realignment of CUSA and SunBelt. I like your Big Southwest name better than either CUSA or SunBelt. This was my proposal:

Big Southwest (borrowing your name, which I prefer to CUSA)

BSW West - NMSU (add), UTEP, Texas State, UTSA, UNT, UT-Arlington (non-football), Rice, La Tech
BSW East - UL-Lafayette, UL-Monroe, UA-Little Rock (non-football), Arkansas State, Sou Miss, UAB, FAU, FIU

SunBelt (keeping their name)

SB South - Troy, South Alabama, Ga Southern, Ga State, Coastal Carolina, Charlotte
SB North - Middle TN, Western KY, Marshall, App State, ODU, Liberty (add)

OK, I know the Florida schools are a reach, but they aren't really a geographic fit either place. If you move them directly to SunBelt, then both leagues have divisions of 7 schools (at least non-footballl) which makes scheduling a bit of a problem. This way you have natural travel pairs for non-football sports (in order listed). If you swap them for two that fit, like Troy and USA, the the SunBelt doesn't retain enough members to keep its NCAA automatic bid.

I think the only chance any of these schools has going forward is to find something that makes geographic sense. I don't know if that even works, but it's got more of a chance than the current spread-out CUSA and SunBelt.

Your bowl could match the two league champions.

If TexasU and KU go to, say, the B1G, and OU and Okie State go to the SEC after the TV contacts run out in IIRC 2023, that has a chance to happen. If Rice is as poorly prepared for it as they are now, it will be an unmitigated disaster.

If the Big12 and AAC stay together as they are currently composed, I'd be okay with this group...

UTEP, UTSA, Texas State, North Texas, Arkansas State, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana, Southern Mississippi, Rice

RE: The Big Southwest Conference: Create Your Own Future
From conversations with a couple of well placed Texas boosters, the reaction from the Pac 12 and Big 10 to the pandemic has lessened the allure of the two conferences to the Longhorns. There is a lot of chatter about the Arizona schools bolting to the Big 12 when the TV rights come up in a couple of years. All rumor at this point. There is just too much money associated with membership in a Power 5 conference for any school to opt out unless the Big 12 folds, which looks increasingly unlikely.
