Chicago State AD talks potential move
Credit to Iwokeuplikethis on the realignment board. Chicago State AD talks about their athletic program

A Board of Trustee member asks why are in the WAC and if other regional options make better sense.

AD mentions the Horizon and OVC as potential landing spots. He says they will have more information about costs in October.

RE: Chicago State AD talks potential move
If Chicago State could just regain half of what they've lost they'd be fine. They were once close to 10K students, around the year 2000, or a little before. While this latest drop, during the 4 years or so have been partially due to state budgets, most of the damage has been self inflicted.

But the comments and questions I saw from this board meeting make me thing they have no chance. I don't really mind having them in the WAC that much, but I think independent is their best course of action now.

They are in an area with TONS of schools to play and they seem to have pretty good luck at scheduling teams you would expect to not be willing to play them, like Notre Dame. As an Indy I think they'd be fine for a while, give themselves a chance to get back in their feet financially and to increase enrollment.

You think being the only basketball Independent would be more beneficial to them than staying in the WAC? I don’t think the WAC will kick them out, but I don’t see the HL or OVC taking them.

RE: Chicago State AD talks potential move
The Chicago St BOT seem to be pretty oblivious to the fact that they are a bottom of the barrel D1 program. They don’t seem to realize that they aren’t in a better Midwestern conference because no one wants them.

The Horizon and OVC both have 12 members. I see zero reasons why either of them should add a struggling Chicago St.

If Chicago State left, the WAC would only have 8 members with 3 in the middle of a transition to D1. Unless the WAC can get more members, I think it needs Chicago State to keep the member numbers up. Folks may not want to hear that, but I think that is the reality.

CBU is considered D1 for scheduling and at the moment that's all that matters. My bigger concern is once we all have CV19 in a rearview mirrors how big of a hit will WAC school have taken as well as other mid to low major leagues/schools. I don't believe the WAC is in that big of a need to have CSU around as it stands currently. Is 9 better than 8 when it's the outlier? Cause you headaches on multiple fronts? WAC members would welcome no trips to Chicago for their OLY sports. The financial savings to UVU UTRGV NMSU DSU TSU and to a lesser degree GCU CBU SU would be a source of relief during CV19 times.

What headache do they pose? Travel to Chicago is only incrementally more expensive and/or longer than other WAC schools. And that’s just an assumption. I think it’s negligible. If ChSt leaves and we lose a couple other schools (which happens all the time), you don’t think we’d be in a bind? If other schools are available, why aren’t they already in the WAC to get us to 10-12 members and on stable footing?

1) Due to only having so many jump to D1 at a time it doesn't cause an issue like The Southland had for 1.
2) Who in the WAC is a flight risk if everything in leagues around the WAC stay pretty steady/stable in number?
3) Headaches is having a school not in compliance with the WAC, school itself has no business being D1 as it sits right now, Chicago States brand not only makes the them look bad but it has hampered schools to join the WAC b/c of how many problems they have. I'd say that is headache quality.

RE: Chicago State AD talks potential move
I would only hope "if" Chicago State is able to find a new home in either the Horizon, Ohio Valley, possibly the MEAC, or Atlantic Sun, it would happen in conjunction with the WAC adding another D2 school; like possibly West Texas A&M or Azusa Pacific. With Seattle being the one remaining outlier, a new WAC's footprint would be centered back in the southwest portion the of the USA... California, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Texas. Again, if there is a renewed interest in starting up football in the WAC, there are a number of potential future candidates in Texas, possibly one in California, and... maybe in Colorado or Oklahoma down the road. I do think, for Chicago State's survival it needs to be in a more regionally acceptable conference. Right now for both the WAC and Chicago State, its a marriage of convenience/necessity; with few suitors.

With one A&M school already through the door, you have to wonder if the other schools in the system will feel pressured to keep up with the Joneses—WTAMU, Commerce, Kingsville.

Please produce your source that shows that having Chicago State “has hampered schools to join the WAC”.

Btw, every school is a flight risk. All want out of the WAC.

Not a fair question. No school that turns down a WAC offer is going to state on the record that Chicago State's membership in the conference had an impact on their decision. But anyone who follows conference realignment knows that key considerations for most schools evaluating a move include the geographic proximity and institutional compatibility of other schools in the destination conference. When it comes to WAC recruitment of new members in the western U.S., Chicago State is an impediment with respect to both of these factors.

UMKC, Cal Baptist, Dixie State, and Tarleton State all joined after Chicago State was added. Who has turned down a WAC offer?

Two that were reported publicly in 2018 are Colorado Mesa and Metropolitan State University-Denver. Also I have no doubt that the WAC took a run at UC San Diego after the Tritons were rejected by the Big West in 2017, but the Tritons elected to hold out for the Big West.

Flights to Chicago may be expensive for some of you but from Texas (especially DFW) Chicago is cheap. DFW is a major hub for American and Dallas Love goes to Chicago Midway.

If any other Texas schools join it will be easy for them

Do you believe that Chicago St was the sole reason Metro and Mesa “reportedly” did not go D1/WAC? Do you think UCSD turned down the WAC because of Chicago St?

Metro State, some other Colorado d2 schools, some Big Skyschools and a few schools from the Southland. The list is long my friend. Th WAC is a leper colony

Metro State, some other Colorado d2 schools, some Big Skyschools and a few schools from the Southland. The list is long my friend. Th WAC is a leper colony

Again, the D2 Colorado schools only reason not to go D1 was Chicago St?

Just like with the Dixie St thread, which current Southland schools would leave the conference for the far-flung, 2 extra time zone, WAC? Chicago St is the sole reason as some claim?
