8-5 with 4 losses coming to Top 10 teams. They most likely play for a national title had they gone undefeated.

I don't see how they were unlucky. They got blown out by 4 good teams. There are a lot of SEC teams that can say that every year.

1983 ecu, finished the year 8-3 top 25 and no bowl game. 3 losses were at FSU by 1 point, at Florida, and at national champ Miami. All losses were by less than 5 points. You can imagine on the road in 1983, we did not get the benefit of the doubt from the refs.

I'd say 2016 Tulsa was more unlucky.

We lost at Houston by 7. Got stopped on the goalline as time expired with Houston having 13 men on the field at the snap. Refs didn't call it.
Then lost at Navy after the refs blew a call that should have gave us the ball back late, down 2, and near field goal range.

We had a team that was good enough to win the CCG, but got robbed of that opportunity. All we could do was massacre Central Michigan in our bowl game and finish 10-3.

Did they lose to a Porter-coached Memphis Tigers.... That would be the barometer. I'm not gonna look it up, but something tells me the answer was "no".

That was a stupid year.

We got blown out by everyone good and then gave away a bowl win to BYU by muffing a punt inside the 5 yard line.

Unlucky? They beat UCF last year.
