Delay of game on defense
When the offense makes a substitution, the defense is allowed to make one as well. The ref steps in to allow the defense to substitute. If the defense doesn’t get off the field fast enough, I’ve seen delay of game get called both ways. Sometimes against the offense, sometimes against the defense if they were not making a good faith effort to get off the field quickly enough.

I’d like to see what happened when we had the ball on previous series deep in ASU territory. The ref stood over the ball till 2 seconds were left of the play clock, leading to a rushed snap.

Arkansas state substituted with 15 seconds to go on the play clock. We should have gotten to substitute as well and had the ball not been on the 2 yard line it would have been easier to do.

This should always be the measuring stick...

How much time was on the clock when their player starts to run off the field?

Because the defense cannot make a substitution until we know who is left on the field after their sub.

The idea should be is if you substitute under x # of seconds you shouldn't expect to get the snap off if the defense subs. It shouldn't be left up to the refs judgement.

The easiest way to do it is to stop play clock if the ref is standing over the ball.

Arkansas State subbed with 18 seconds left on the play clock.

Dorceus gets to the numbers on the field about 11 seconds left on the play clock. At that time, Arkansas State is ready to go, they're in their huddle. Dorceus does jog on the field (which he is told to) and gets to the huddle with about 4 seconds left. After that, the 12th men for the Tigers jogs off the field, leaving the play clock to be expire.

Personally, it was the right call. Yes, defense does have the right to sub, but cannot take forever.

If the offense jogs on and off then the defense should also. The defense should not have to run on and be out of breath right before the play and not be able to recover.

You would have to stop the game clock as well, or teams with leads would use it as a tool to kill the game clock.
