True - and let me beat Joe to the punch - NTX only needs to win one more to beat our total from last year. But, in the words of our great U.S. general, “we shall return.” We have a new coach who has already dramatically improved our recruiting.

That maybe true, but HBU has a good QB and a feisty defense that played against a team with limited quality practice time. HBU has a limited schedule with plenty of time to game plan against UNT and Us. UNT will be fine but eviscerating their team that beat another by 20 points is silly.

Kudos to HBU, the fcs team who lit up NTX’s secondary. NTX’s next opponent is formidable and a rival. My money is on SMU winning by at least two touchdowns. I would predict winning by at least three touchdowns, but I’m sure NTX’s pride playing at home will keep the game close. Let’s revisit this conversation after the game.

Did you watch the Texas State game? SMU didn’t exactly destroy their competition. Rival games bring out the best in teams. Positivity is a welcome attribute this early in the season.

Don't mind odudj96. He is just one of my two personal ODU trolls. They hate North Texas, and basically want all of the Texas programs out of C-USA. His team has no football to talk about, so he wants to needle us so he can be part of a conversation.

SMU may well beat us in 2 weeks. It is hard to say. UNT ran very vanilla offense and defense against HBU, so I don't really know how good we are. The defense didn't look good, but wasn't playing with their total scheme either, and our o-line is still a concern for me. Plus, 7,000 in attendance won't give us our usual home field advantage for this game.

I predicted North Texas to be a 3-5 team in C-USA, and a 4-7 team overall. Despite the record setting offensive night, I saw nothing that changes my assessment (although, USM's performance against USA gives me hope of an additional Mean Green win). In short, UNT has serious issues on defense and the o-line.

Here are some specific observations..

1. Bowen's defense needs to get a lot better. Bowen's system gave up 568 yards of offense and 31 points to an FCS team tonight. Very bad.

2. Bowen's defense didn't record a "three-and-out" until half way through the 3rd quarter. And this was against FCS talent. Very bad.

3. Our offensive line was descent in pass blocking, but still bad at run blocking. This was also against FCS talent. Very bad.

4. Adaway looks like the real deal (5 carries/ 118 yards/ 2TD's), especially since the o-line wasn't really blocking well. Very good.

5. Bean looked better at QB than Aune. Possibly good.

Might be your only win this season. Porous secondary. 39 of 62 for 480 yards and 3 TDS. Is their qb that good or is your secondary that bad?

North Texas is about like we were last season, but that still isn't as bad as ODU.

Good luck with the rest of your season too.

Ouch! ZING!

I didn't see the UNT game, but I watched every down of the SMU-TSU game. SMU QB Shane Buechele finished 26 of 36 for 367 yds. On the surface that sounds like a good QB day. But note that he also threw 2 INT's vs 1 TD, and struggled with some 1st game miscues.

I thought Texas St did a good job with field position all day. TSU never punted. This, combined with with picking off 2 INT's, getting 1 fumble recovery and converting 2 of 3 4th-down possessions (67%) to keep drives alive, continually forced SMU to have to drive the length of the field to score points.

I don't know if UNT has the firepower to stay with SMU. Probably not. But UNT must keep SMU's powerful --but erratic-- Sonny Dykes offense on the bench, or the Buechele kid could throw for 500 yds or more.

SMU & Houston are both going to score 40+

The only way we win one (or both) is if we have some good fortune with turnovers.

We just don't have the horses on defense to compete with them, at least not from what I saw yesterday.

Once we actually see some of the defensive packages, we will find out if Bowen's scheme works. Our D may be able to keep us in the game, but we won't find that out until kickoff.

But, I can say without a doubt that our o-line is going to be a problem again. I have zero faith in their ability to open holes for our talented RB's. They couldn't open holes in the first half against HBU, so there is no way they have success against SMU. North Texas will have to get yards through the air, and with Bean's feet. We will also have to lean on Adaway in short yardage situations. I think that is the mostly likely scenario for North Texas success.
