Don’t the cuts now taking place at W&M, ODU, Stanford, etc. make LR’s decision to cut sports and fully fund scholarships for the remaining JMU varsity teams look better in hindsight? JMU has benefitted in all sports BUT MBB and Baseball...but I blame that more on poor HC hiring decisions.

Wasn't she just hired in the last 2 years?

Was the cutting the 7 sports just here decision?

RE: W&M Cuts 7 Sports Teams
If you read between the lines of JMU's "Dukes Unite" campaign they've launched trying to remind fans to still donate during all of this, even if you're not going to any in-person events, is that this could become a reality for JMU Athletics as well.

I hope sports programs don't get cut, but until this is all over, it's always a potential possibility when we're short $5.5M of revenue we would've had in a normal year.

There’s no sports left to cut and stay in Division 1 (to my understanding).

Wow. What an incredible donation. A quick google looks like Harold Alfond Foundation is doing some pretty phenomenal work around the state and region. Google also tells me his company was bought with $433M in Berkshire stock so that foundation will be supporting Maine for many many years. Fantastic stuff.

Wow- that is impressive.

I realize that we did not have full time, on campus male students till the late 60s. Still-you'd think we would have one "whale" that can write those huge checks to the athletic dept. Or that one of our schoolmarm or librarian grads from earlier days hit the mother load and married a tycoon? Where's our Kevin Plank, T Boone Pickens etc?

Not exactly a whale the size of T Boone Pickens but didn't the founder of California Pizza Kitchen go to JMU?

JMU alum G.J. Hart was CEO of CPK, Texas Roadhouse and now Torchy's Tacos (Texas) "Hart was the first to be named into the James Madison University Hospitality School Hall of Fame. In 2015, he and his wife Heather Hart jointly announced a $3 million gift commitment to JMU resulting in the newly renamed Hart School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Management. The intention of this gift is to help young people to be successful in work that emphasizes the importance of serving the public through a career in hospitality."

As Sprinter notes he was CEO not the founder. I do think from doing a little reading that he had a big stake in TR and helped build that company out and took it public so I am sure he has plenty of money. He's a sports supporter as well as far as I can tell as he and his wife were sitting in JB's suite last fall when we were there for UNH game.

RE: W&M Cuts 7 Sports Teams
If JMU won't or can't join a peer football conference it would not be hard to make a case that JMU should cut football. We can't spend at the current level and remain fcs, the ROI metrics can't be favorable. I'd be curious how many of the 21k at gamrs are HBG locals and employees which should not be factored into an engagement metric. An engagement metric should filter on out of the area alum.

It’s an absurd article/idea. W&M FB is endowed, and as I understand it the 7 sports originally cut have been restored with an effort to endow their costs. The article to me is nothing more than the bile of a FB/sports hater.
