Ranking the newest FBS startups
Got this idea from panama's thread.
These are the newest cohort of FBS teams and the year of their first season:
ODU (2009)
South Alabama (2009)
Georgia State (2010)
UTSA (2011)
Charlotte (2013)
So how would you rank them as far as who has done it best as a start-up?
1. Georgia State - Obviously a rough start, but has 3 bowl bids with 1 win, a win over a Tennessee and managed to get Turner Field.
2. ODU - They got the fast start, a win over Va Tech, 10-win season, nice attendance, but only 1 winning season since joining CUSA.
3. South Alabama - Two bowl bids, good wins including over Miss State and a ranked SDSU team.
4. UTSA - Has one bowl big and only 2 winning seasons since joining CUSA.
5. Charlotte - Only 1 bowl bid and winning season since joining CUSA, stadium is sub-par.

I wouldn't call Charlotte's stadium sub par. It's nothing spectacular but it's in a visually appealing part of campus, it's adjacent to a large athletics complex, and has room for expansion (though it might be a looooong time before they need to). It's fine.

Overall I'd go with
1. GSU - 3 Bowl games, Lot's of progress on facilities including the remodel of Turner Field, Signature win over Tennessee, huge enrollment jump (through a merger but still there)
2. USA - 2 Bowl games, New Stadium, Big wins over Mississippi St and a Top 25 San Diego St.
3. ODU - 1 Bowl game, signature win over VT, decent attendance and progress on updating the football stadium.
4. UTSA - 1 Bowl game, very good attendance average but lacking in the wins department
5. Charlotte - 1 Bowl game, tiny but new stadium that needs to be updated from FCS to FBS standards, poor attendance

You can certainly make a case for South #2, which would be funny because not only did they pass on Georgia Southern and App but they might've passed on the two best start-ups, LoL.

I'm surprised that we are #2, we didn't start playing ball period till 2010, we didn't have any facilities. We have done a lot in 10 years, building covered practice facility, outdoor facility, newly finished oncampus stadium, etc. We are hoping to turn it around on the field. Thought App and Georgia Southern would 1 and 2 on the list(no particular order). I believe those schools were successful because they had a history of success before moving up to FBS.

Everyone on the list started playing ball recently. These are all start ups, App and GS are not.
Also, the UNCC stadium is small, but is very nice in my opinion.

You played your first season in 2003, I don't consider you a part of that group.
