And you also have so many schools "near" by. You have EMU, WMU, CMU, BG, UT, NIU, UA, KSU, and even UB with easy drives there.

Plus you have it being indoors and casinos nearby...

That is completely untrue. Columbus would be a GREAT place to host the MAC football championship!

I agree that it would be a great place to host the game... If people are saying that Columbus wouldn't support the MAC Championship because of OSU, than the same could be said about Detroit and UM. Columbus would support it just fine, and the stadium would actually look full. The only thing Detroit has going for it is that it is inside.

Another reason to play the game in a different location is that the MAC should be sending their best team to play the Big Ten opponent in the Detroit bowl, and I can guarantee no fanbase outside of EMU/CMU/WMU wants to travel to Detroit twice in the same month for football games.
I do. All of my friends and family do... if we win tomorrow. But if we lose a B1G would smoke us. Probably coachless too.

And Ann Arbor is 30 mins away from Detroit. The city has as many State fans as Mich fans. Columbus is ALL Ohio State. There may be MAC fans also, but they still are far more of Buckeye fans than their MAC alumnus school. Detroit is pretty balanced between Oakland, Mich, MSU, Wayne State, CMU, EMU, WMU, UD Mercy. See that EMU vs. Mich game at Little Caesars. Imagine Ohio State playing Akron in mbb in Nationwide. And they dont even care about mbb that much.

There are just as many OSU fans in Cleveland as in Columbus, and the MAC basketball tournament does just fine there. Columbus also hosted the MAC basketball tournament for a few years and it did very well there too.... I don't buy that OSU would be a problem. I would also argue that many neutral fans in C-bus who are season ticket holders for the Crew would jump at the chance to see a football game at Lower.com Field as an incentive for buying a full season.

There are absolutely zero facts in this statement. People are losing brain cells reading this garbage

You can’t be serious. The two years the tourney was in Columbus at little Battelle Hall?? It was awful. Very small time venue. Totally failed experiment.

it was an awesome experience both years but especially the second year. the first year, we had a blizzard on the championship day and the place was still packed. the second year, Ohio crushed Miami and the place was bonkers! i'll never forget those two years. they were amazing!

MACC football in Detroit and basketball in Cleveland feels like the best options at this point. Great indoor venues, no worries about weather. The football venue "home crowd" does skew toward the West, but for basketball it's more in the East's back yard. Seems like a good compromise there.

Agree. Let's not mess with a good thing.

Today's crowd would have looked a lot better in Columbus at a smaller stadium like Lower.com Field. The Stadium would have been 77.5% full, and definitely would have had more Ohio fans then what they took to Detroit. Toledo is only 2 hours away and would have probably brought a similar crowd to what they took today. I think it's time to move the game. 15.5k is not a good look for 2 of the conferences better fanbases.

True. But do we quite get that crowd at a neutral site venue without a roof?

I think it's rather nice to play our championship in a domed NFL stadium.

A soccer stadium in Columbus? LOLOLOLOLOLOL

Why don’t we just rent out the Horseshoe?

Do they have any available sandlots in Mingo Junction?

New MAC Football Championship Venue?
I cannot think of a single good reason to put MAC football championship in Columbus

The game would draw much less from being outside in the kickball stadium

If a change of venue is desired, I would be more supportive of going to the Hall of Fame in Canton. There is a big effort to grow that facility and it is actually a FOOTBALL facility. But again, in December a temperature controlled facility makes much more sense

If we were to change venues (which I think we shoudln't) to outdoors, it would make the most sense to stage it on campus sites for team with best record.

Like we used to do when the game started back in 1997.

I prefer a neutral site, personally. We hosted the game in Bowling Green in 2003, and we were able to get a decent crowd together on short notice, but that roof in Detroit is really nice and there is a lot to do near the stadium.

Also, for the record, this game was at a neutral site the first few years -- that neutral site being Marshall University's football stadium. It was only around 2001 when the MAC started rotating the game among division winners. Toledo got the game in 2001, Marshall got it in 2002, and Bowling Green got it in 2003. Then Ford Field came along. I don't miss the old days.

Why? MAC fanbases are clearly not supporting the game in Detroit like they used to. It's time to freshen things up and move the game. I would even say alternating the game between Columbus, and Detroit may be a good way to bring some excitement back to the Championship. A new location would go a long way in generating more excitement, and the new stadium in Columbus and areas around it (hotels, bars and restaurants in the Short North & Arena District) are far better than anything Detroit offers. Not sure why you are so against it. A game outside in early December is no different than any of the games played the week before in outdoor stadiums across the league.

Exactly, that's why nobody shows up the week before. If Ohio fans can't drive a little over 4 hours to witness 1st possible championship since the Vietnam war was in full swing, then that's on them.

Gotta give you credit on that one - I only vaguely recall that!

Guess it's easy to forget it was "neutral" because Marshall was so dominant and had the best record most of those early years of the championship game history.

Seemingly worked out because it would've been kinda weird to have 2 other MAC teams that weren't Marshall battling it out in West VA.

So the 20+ thousand people who were at the BG-UT game in a snow storm on a Tuesday night would not show up to the MAC Championship game on a Saturday at noon in a brand new stadium which has a cover for over 90% of the seats, and hang out in a great city before/after the game because the game is outside? If people travel to watch High School playoff/championship, and NFL games played outside in December, they will travel to watch the MAC Championship, which before Ford Field was also played outdoors, in December, and supported well.

I've lived in both places. Columbus is a good place, but you are selling Detroit short here. If you haven't been up there in a few years, you should give it another try.

They have MAC crowds now. There is an article by Chuck Landon entitled "Why is Marshall's Football Attendance So Low"

Google it.

Give it up. No one wants to play their championship game at a soccer stadium. Especially in a city where there 800 pound gorilla calls home.

I’d love to have the MAC CCG here in Columbus. For it to be successful, I think they have to have a Friday prime time kickoff. All eyes in Columbus will be on the Big 10 title that Saturday more often than not
