(06-02-2021 06:43 PM)Jerry Weaver Wrote:  OK Dan my friend, we can enter into the areas of semantics if you wish. Maxx DID finish his collegiate career at EMU, he did NOT, however, expend all of his eligibility. You are correct, he had one year left and I personally was delighted when he went pro instead of seeing him rushing off the end at a Power 5 program. Had he transferred to U-M or OSU, he probably would have been a first round draft pick and EMU would have been a destination in his rear view mirror. Maxx, instead has the Block E tattooed on his arm.

first off so there isnt any confusion - i fully support maxx's choice and obviously he made the right one. i dont want anyone to take my comment as a criticism or anything.

i think for players the choice isnt as easy as you make it out to be. sure he could have gone to a P5 school but maybe he gets hurt or gets lost on the depth chart. hindsight being what it is he made the right call.

in the more general sense i think the increase in senior year transfers may help EMU if they can snag guys from Div 2 or 1-aa. MAC schools will lose guys but also - if theyre smart - pick them up.

Dan, let me contrast Maxx with another All-MAC defensive end, Michael Danna from CMU. Danna spent his last year of collegiate eligibility at U-M, instead of opting early for the NFL draft. He got the chance to play in front of 100K fans and enjoy the P5 college experience that Maxx did not. Danna was subsequently drafted by the KC Chiefs and remains on their roster and although he clearly lacks Maxx's foot speed and talent, he is doing pretty well considering the circumstances. You make a valid point, however, any decision these athletes make is hardly risk averse, Danna could have suffered a career ending injury at U-M and while I think Maxx may have elevated his draft status playing in the Power 5, there is no clear answer to the best choice.

I'm glad you bought this issue up Dan, because it is a tribute to Crosby. The Raiders list Maxx as coming from EMU, the Chiefs reference Danna as attending U-M while only playing their for a single season. Thanks Maxx!

Yeah I guess the general point I'm trying to make is that I support players making the moves that better prepare them for potential careers in football and I think if EMU's coaches are worth their salt - they're going to have to figure out how to recruit useful grad transfer seniors. That RB they got from JMU seems to indicate they can do it - and i think itll add another fold to roster construction - similar to how we (and other schools) use the JUCO ranks.

Dan you are passionate about athlete's rights and I indeed admire you for doing so. All FBS football schools should be indeed preparing players for a future career, the same as the Chemistry department does for the students in their program. You are spot on!

Here is my concern. With the new transfer rules, Maxx certainly a Power 5 defensive end, would have benefited from a transfer to U-M a year earlier than he left EMU. Chase Winovich, U-M's star DE at the time, would have become Chase Who? Maxx was clearly better. Yes EMU will get better with aggressive recruiting of P5 castoffs, but the likelihood of them of going to the NFL is minimal. After all if they could not make it in the B1G, why expect a huge future in pro sports? Taking a longshot chance on a skinny kid like Crosby with the transfer portal so rich? EMU and its like will no longer provide a future avenue for playing the game professionally.

As you have accurately stated before, NCAA sports do indeed survive and thrive no matter the changes. I just dunno about this, I never warmed up to Murphy's BB team in 2018-19 when he turned over almost the entire roster even though the new guys worked very hard. I like some degree of continuance and loyalty. Maybe I'm just a dinosaur.

And on the flip side - there is nothing stopping EMU from raiding 1-AA and Div II for good players.

Players are moving up and down from FBS --> FCS and FCS --> FBS.

This is good.

Dan and Steve you are probably right. NCAA schools are in the business of preparing attendees for future careers and the transfer portal is indeed an avenue for those to maximize their opportunities to do so. The Heisman Trophy winner and number one overall NFL draft pick two years ago would probably not have started a NCAA football game had he stayed at OSU. That would have been an abject failure of our college sports system for sure.

I'm just uneasy about the massive roster turnover and its effects on the fan base. I used to be a rapid NBA fan and now I rarely watch games, I only revel when the star assembled LA Lakers lose in the first round but I simply hate when the similarly orchestrated roster of the Nets are destroying the Bucks. I'm most likely wrong, sports will survive this turnover, but I may be their first fan casualty as I am indeed an old man set in his ways.

I agree. thankfully EMU hasnt been hit too hard. Following teams, especially in basketball has been tough.

You are correct, Ken. That said, we always start late and finish strong. Why? Schools like CMU which are successful in-state usually get their commits early.

As I've said before, I think 2022 is another year for a prudent HC to hold back scholarships for JUCOs, Feb. signings and then transfers.

If I were C.C. I wouldn't give out more than say 12 scholarships in Dec. Give say 3 or 4 in Feb. and hold the rest for transfers, PWOs who earned a scholarship, etc.

We need to come up with a reasonably accurate count of TRUE SENIORS (eliminating SUPER SENIORS whose scholarships don't count) to figure out how many scholarships are expected to come open, before attrition.

Once again, I think JUCOs will be overlooked as coaches concentrate on h.s. players and immediately eligible transfers.

EDIT:

For those interested it looks like we have 121 offers outstanding per 247Sports (some may not be committable, as someone noted elsewhere).

Again for those interested, our list of offers are very heavily weighted toward MI and OH, which makes perfect sense. Heavy with IN and IL and also areas where we travel to recruit in the deep ponds, namely, Ga. and FL. I like that we have 8 offers out in IL, which has become a nice recruiting territory for us.

Maybe '79 knows/remembers which states our departed assistant coaches recruited hard.

We are really 'starting to make a living' recruiting all of that area West of Chicago. To bad we don't play Northwestern and get more visibility in Chicago area.

We will get some visibility playing WI this September. And we play NIU ever year and now winning some of those games (aren't we 2 - 2 with 2 OT losses in the last 4 years). I'm starting to be a big fan of playing very well against NIU.

His tweet announcing his commitment says he is 6'7". At 265 they are going to want him to bulk up some.

A redshirt year should work for both he and EMU. Last time I checked, the EMU OL depth chart is not a problem. 02-13-banana

We were his only D1 offer but it appears from his twitter that he performed well in camps and scouts like Edgy Tim really like his potential. This could be a case of we got in early to the party. I agree with Steve it appears he is still growing and a redshirt year is in the offing. I love the fact that we can now redshirt our true frosh.

Yes 6'5 265 out of Lemont IL

His tweet announcing his commitment says he is 6'7". At 265 they are going to want him to bulk up some.

At 6'7" and 265, a lot of schools probably looked past him because he is pretty light. If he has decent speed and good hands, they might be looking at him as a TE. At that height, he'd be a good target in the flats.

I wouldn't worry about counting scholarship offers as of June 17 (yesterday) of a pandemic year. It means little this year. The common metrics, e.g., offers, unofficial visits, etc. is wacky this year.

I assume he has been on campus (maybe June 1???) and liked what he saw.

If I were a h.s. player, I'd attend camps, see who is interested, make any kind of visit (within driving distance), etc. and try to make an early decision.

I'll repeat what I've said before, December will be crazy. There is a 'backlog' of maybe prep school players, JUCOs, etc. trying to get signed as well as the h.s. class of 2022. They all know that hell will break loose when the transfer portal re-opens. I'd think the D-I coaches know which h.s./prep/JUCO players would NORMALLY have signed in Feb. but got frozen out because of the pandemic/super senior/transfer portal craziness.

In the 'good ole days' there was one signing period, and the ducks quickly got in line and in order. Now it is chaotic. Like planes landing at LAX. Planes circling and circling trying to get permission to find a runway to land on...

Did or will EMU have any visitors in during the month of June?
