No Backyard Brawl (WVU-Pitt), no Keg of Nails (Cincinnati-Louisville), No Border War (Kansas Missouri), no Texas-Texas A&M....

Going back further to the loss of PSU-Pitt.

The Big 8/Big XII shift put a stop to the yearly bouts seen in the Big 8. Losing UNL-OU hurts. Heck, losing UNL-UC as they went east and west respectively was a hit.

You lost a lot when the SWC fell apart. Sure, maybe nothing as big as Texas and A&M years later, but we saw Arkansas go their way, and then others theirs.

I am only informed enough to comment on the Power 5 and the American Athletic Conference.

AAC: UCF and USF
ACC: It was FSU and Clemson, then FSU and Miami, and now FSU and Clemson again. (UNC and Duke in Basketball)
Big 10: University of Michigan and Ohio State
Big 12: University of Oklahoma and University of Texas
PAC-12: USC and Stanford
SEC: Auburn and University of Alabama (probably University of Florida and University of Kentucky in basketball)

RE: Each Conference's Best Rivalry
B1G: Ohio State-Michigan
SEC: Alabama-Auburn
B12: Texas-Oklahoma
ACC: Clemson-South Carolina (SEC)
P12: still UCLA-USC although both schools mediocrity has seen this game fall national importance, which is killing the league

Lot's of honorable mentions in each conference, especially the SEC which has kept many alive

There really isn't a storied rivalry in G5 that is still going strong. It has to have packed houses good years and bad, and you don't see that much of anywhere.

Realignment, TV and the playoffs have kind of diminished many rivalries, both P5 and G5.

Based on that criteria, UCF-USF would be the biggest in the AAC but there are others that are better.

AAC : UCF-USF

ACC : Duke-UNC

Big Ten : Michigan-Ohio State

Big 12 : Oklahoma-Texas

CUSA : UAB-USM

MAC : Ohio-Miami(OH)

MWC : Boise State-BYU

PAC 12 : USC-Washington

SEC : Alabama-Auburn

Sun Belt : Appalachian State-Georgia Southern

none of the above is a better answer. Maybe Memphis-Houston (since Memphis and Cincinnati don't play every year).
ACC: Miami vs Florida St

Big Ten: Michigan vs Ohio St

Big 12: Oklahoma vs Texas

CUSA: WKU vs MTSUWho knows they are rivals? none of the above is the best answer)

MAC: Toledo vs Bowling GreenMight Toledo fans say Toledo-WMU? And there's an argument for Miami-Ohio

MWC: Colorado St vs Wyoming

PAC 12: USC vs UCLA

SEC: Auburn vs AlabamaGeorgia-Florida or Alabama-Tennesse

Sun Belt: Appalachian St vs Georgia Southernnone of the above a good answer. Only the Southland schools really have an extended history together-ULL-ULM-Arkansas St.

This thread shows how little history the G5 conferences have with each other excluding the MAC.
WKU and MTSU have played 70 times. Its called 100 Miles of Hate. And to answer your question, many people in this thread know they are rivals. That one seems like a you issue

I knew they were rivals, but I lived in Kentucky. I don't think most people do know. They have been in separate conferences quite a bit since their days in the OVC.

As a Middle Tennessee State University graduate, I can say that MTSU and Western Kentucky have healthy competition, with the football games drawing a respectable level of interest (in hoops, too).

The schools are located no more than 100 miles apart, with Nashville somewhat "in the middle."

It's a good, solid rivalry.

RE: Each Conference's Best Rivalry
There could be another category for which conference has the most big rivalries, e.g.

MAC - Akron/Kent, Toledo/BG, CMU/WMU, Miami/Ohio

B10 - tOSU/UM, Indiana/Purdue, Wisc./Minn.

SEC - UF/UGA, UF/Tenn., Alabama/Auburn, Tenn./UGA

ACC - UNC/Duke, FSU/Miami, Syracuse/?

Real rivalries don't pop up over night. In ACC football, it is would seem to be FSU and Miami. These two schools have been at it for a long time. USC and UCLA is the biggest rivalry in the Pac-12. It is not even close and it extends to every sport. Two power conference schools in the same conference, in the same city, the second largest city in the country and ten miles apart. It is unique and one of the best rivalries in college football. Stanford has a bigger rivalry with Cal.

For myself, the best conference rivalries in college football are OU-Texas and Michigan-Ohio State. Everyone is a rival of Alabama these days, so in the SEC the default choice becomes Auburn-Alabama. That is usually a good matchup. Alabama-LSU is always entertaining, even if Alabama usually wins.

For many years Alabama-LSU gets more attention because CBS makes it their annual prime time game. In a few years it will be a moot point but you wonder why CBS doesn't save its prime time game for the Iron Bowl rather than Alabama-LSU at least once in a while when Auburn has beaten Alabama three times since 2013 and LSU only beat them once in the same time span (ironically that game was the only 3:30pm ET kickoff over that period). Once ESPN gets full control of the SEC, you wonder if the Iron Bowl will be prime time every year.

RE: Each Conference's Best Rivalry
Something the average fan may not know about is that in several G5 conferences, or at least in the Sun Belt, the biggest rivalries are played midseason rather than at the end of the year. The reason for this is that so many of the P5's biggest and most watched rivalries are all on the week/weekend of Thanksgiving, so in order to get any sort of airtime, they have to be played earlier on. Georgia Southern vs. App State, Troy vs. South Alabama, and Arkansas State vs. Louisiana are normally midseason and midweek.
