First play of the game was a 75-yard touchdown run, it was really exciting to say the least! Got me thinking, why in the hell are FCS teams playing right now...but the MAC won't be playing at all? Makes zero sense.

with a few more months of understanding the virus and how to contain it in both athletics and the college environment, sports will be a lot safer. beyond the community spread reality there is a lot unknown about long term lung, heart and organ complications experienced by those who survive the virus. these may affect healthy 20 year old somewhat less than middle aged patients but are still prevalent and if you can avoid long term health problems for a few of your players it's probably best to wait a few months before beginning the season. imo, MAC did the right thing. hopefully, they are creative with the off season season and can make it exciting for fans and players when play resumes.

The statement could be reversed to say it doesn't make sense that the FCS IS playing. For the most part, they have fewer resources for detection, treatment and containment. Same could be said for the high schools. Maybe being one of the few leagues playing in Spring will have tv revenue advantages? Maybe they can get a bowl invite to start the year. 05-stirthepot

Starting a CFB season does not mean you will end up completing it. Let's hold off attacking MAC or BigTen until we see how CFB season goes this year

I went to a high school football game right here in Toledo on Friday night. It was surreal. Football actually happened and everything was fine.

define "fine." Lots of people in the stands? Same rules as always?

And given what is known about this virus, probably a bit early by any definition to make that claim don't you think? Let's hope it was "fine." The risks have to be made sooner or later but rather than fine, I prefer to say, the experiment has begun.

Not necessarily disagreeing with your point here, but if you really wanted to "avoid long term health problems for a few of your players," you would go ahead and eliminate the football program altogether. In other words, for better or for worse, football players already accept long-term health risk in order to play the game.

Well then a football player should just take their equipment off and play old time football. Right? Why take any precaution with injuries if we're not worried about this stupid virus. Why have disinfectant used in locker rooms and showers? The point is we can't just ignore the virus because it's an inconvenience to us or what we want to do. If someones child or a parent doesn't care about head injuries or MRSA should be stop any precautions? I'm not saying cancel a season, but everyone use precautions, including students on campus if they want that college football Saturday experience ( or MAC Tuesday).

Its not just about the players, but this is a high contagious infectious disease, that can easily spread among players and coaches, then to family members, friends, other students, co-workers, teachers, and into the community. HS and CFB programs and players are not in a "bubble". Its why large gatherings remain a huge risk to further spreading COVID-19. Let's pray and hope that does not happen, but cannot avoid that the rest exists.

I keep hearing it is highly contagious, but the rate of infections is well below that in a typical flu season. People also seem to forget that the H1N1 virus infected over 60 million Americans - about 10x the number infected so far by Covid19. But there were only 12,500 deaths - so it was largely ignored. Most people didn't even hear about the number of cases involved - or that testing was started then stopped. That was also a pandemic. It was more luck than effort that resulted in the low number of deaths.

No question deaths are much higher from Covid. It presents much more severe complications - especially to the elderly and others with compromised immune systems. It is a virus. I have seen nothing to indicate it is more contagious than the flu - especially when you consider the high number of flu cases that are never reported through treatments - unless they base it off the sales of OTC remedies. The difference is that very few people fear the flu. Many are driven to paralyzing panic over Covid.

We keep learning more and more about Covid. No one has the answer - and only in hindsight are the politicos offering how they would have controlled the virus better.

Science on COVID-19 still emerging given that it is a new virus but in terms of infection rate compared to flu, here is current science. Since decisions are being made now on how best to reduce spread, they can only be based on current science:

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/symptoms/flu-vs-covid19.htm

And as to panic over getting COVID, feel free to talk to those in the front lines in hospitals, ending up in the hospital with COVID is a very alarming concern and worthwhile fear. More so than the common seasonal flu. There is plenty of concern, and documented cases of serious short term and potential long term health impacts from COVID that simply are not seen in same rate and severity as the flu.

when your stating flu infection rates people weren't socially distancing, wearing mask and the economy wasn't disturbed to prevent outbreaks. The only defense is a sometimes protective flu vaccine that not even half the citizens get. If covid were let to run rampant (ie Herd Immunity) who knows what the numbers would be.

RE: College FB Tonight
Another thing to note about the seasonal flu - the popularly reported numbers for cases and deaths are actually estimates that come out of a computer model. The actual number of individual deaths actually reported as from the flu is substantially less - maybe 10x. But, since most people don't get tested for the flu it's known the real numbers are higher, so models were developed to predict the likely number of flu deaths based on the actual reports plus a bunch of other factors. For COVID, we are actually counting deaths and cases 1 by 1 (either confirmed deaths or suspected deaths based on symptoms). So, comparing flu and covid numbers is a bit of an apples and oranges comparison.

define "fine." Lots of people in the stands? Same rules as always?

And given what is known about this virus, probably a bit early by any definition to make that claim don't you think? Let's hope it was "fine." The risks have to be made sooner or later but rather than fine, I prefer to say, the experiment has begun.

Fine meaning all 48 minutes of action were played and we all went home safely. Certainly a different atmosphere with limited fans. I'll tell you what, it was really weird to see both teams in the same end zone during the shortened halftime break since lorckerrooms are a no-go.
