More effort to vote? Should be the opposite, we should be making it as easy as possible to vote.

The easier it is the vote, the more idiots that vote. The more idiots that vote, the worse our politicians get.

There should be both an IQ test and a knowledge test of basic issues in order to vote.

Also, the more you pay in federal income tax, the more your vote should count. The highest tax payers should have their votes weighted more heavily. It would keep the free loaders and super rich who use loopholes to pay basically no taxes from stealing from the hard working middle class.

Imagine a world where us middle class people actually had the power to decide elections...not the lazy or super rich who don’t pay taxes anyway...

This is the worst idea ever. You sure hate the Constitution. Do you think there should be tests to own a gun? Tests to have free speech? One's income or intelligence shouldn't matter.

I didn’t say income. I said amount you pay in tax. Super rich people often pay little to no tax for multiple reasons. Their votes shouldn’t count as much as a middle class person’s either. So don’t misconstrue the argument I’m making.

As to your question about guns...yes, I think if your IQ is at a level where you are considered mentally deficient, you should be disallowed from buying a gun.

But the rich can then just choose to pay more in taxes to literally get more of a say in government...as a feature of the system. I'm guessing you haven't really thought through the details of this plan.

Also, sure, let's set the IQ minimum for gun ownership at 140. Seems Constitutional, right?

This is a very enlightening thread.

I’m not sure about you, but I’d be delighted if the super rich in this country paid a lot more in taxes.

I have a higher effective tax rate than billionaires in this country. That’s a problem.

Also, if you’re just a “taker” from society and don’t contribute anything, I don’t think you should get an equal say in how much you should be allowed to take from me.

Contributing members of society should have a say.

I think the players should be given a few hours to go vote, not a whole day. I can't take a day off to go vote. I think there should be a test for guns, not just IQ tests, but some sort of sanity test(not violent, crazy, etc..)

No where I've worked in the private sector has had it for a holiday unless they took it as a PTO day.

RE: SBC will ban required athletic events on election day
I don’t think being an athlete in the State of Texas is a responsible excuse to vote absentee per state law. A certain party that supports "freedom" has made certain of that.

There are too many short-sighted-couch arguments in this thread to address but I would advise anyone who thinks suffrage rights should be based on intelligence or net worth to open a book on the history of suffrage rights in this country. It’s appalling to say at the least to think we should have such requirements, and it speaks volume those opinions are shared by some our nation’s leaders today.

It’s certainly not the kind of democracy I want my children to grow up in.

I have never understood the arguments of some, that if they had to face the hardship then the generations to come should to. Something that should be an unalienable right like casting a vote shouldn’t be measured by any hardship – ANY barriers should have been removed years ago, because it hasn’t and you have had to struggle with it doesn’t mean it should continue.

Finally, students or employees are AMERICAN first. They have the right to voice their opinion, especially representing a PUBLIC institution like all the Sun Belt schools. Lebron James or Shai Werts do not forfeit their right to voice their viewpoints because they play a sport. Idk even where to start where that thought process is flawed.

I hope everyone can agree the least important thing our institutional teams do is win games. We are raising MEN, educated MEN who we should hope will be leaders in the communities if they go professional or not. Given that many of these young men are crying out that there is UNJUSTICE occurring in their communities, and that they are PEACEFULLY voicing their concerns, I think it is HONERABLE that the conference has made this move. It shows action that in the Sun Belt we care more than FOOTBALL. We are raising AMERICAN MEN. Who hopefully now, if they didn’t already know, can see the importance of practicing their right to vote.

Shame on a few of y’all. If you haven’t heard it in a while here it is, “Your creature comforts aren’t the only thing worth fighting for.” No one is taking your liberty and making it easier for others to practice theirs should be praised not scolded.

Is it not ironic that the party of the "silent majority" is always the most against making it easier for everyone to vote?

I said I thought there were some people that shouldn’t vote, but I’m not for keeping them from voting or requiring a test. My whole criticism is putting new restrictions on athletics. Especially since very very few will be able to take advantage of it, but all will be restricted by it.

Well, thank God for the Civil Rights Act of 1965 and other moral movements that resulted in people like yourself the right to vote. It's obvious you are willingly ignorant of the history of suffrage rights in this country. But you can’t help people not interested in facts past their own self-harming opinion.

And I will remind you that the conference “unanimously” agreed to these changes. I don’t how any logical person could be upset when the institutions being restricted voted YES on the new rules. Thank god the leadership at Ark St is represented by people of values and not by some of their vocal supporters. But, hey I think we stopped having an honest discussion when you stopped reading past the headline.

RE: SBC will ban required athletic events on election day
I always hear University officials refer to their athletes as "Student Athletes"!!! This indicates that these "Student Athletes" have successfully graduated from high school and are in the process of continuing their "education" in order to "earn" a degree from an institution of higher learning. If that is the case, they (and anyone for that matter) should be able to research and/or figure out how to 1) vote absentee 2) vote early or 3) find time on election day to vote in person! If they can't do this simple thing, should they actually be qualified to be issued a College Degree?

The voting process in the USA has worked better than anywhere else in the world for over 200 years, as evidenced by both Democrats and Republicans winning elections from time-to-time. I don't want to hear about any voter suppression or other nonsense about people being unable to vote. I am convinced that any citizen of the USA (and unfortunately some who are not citizens) that really want to vote can certainly do so. If even a few dead people always seem to find a way to vote, certainly an educated "Student Athlete" should be able to do so! LOL!!!!

I am well aware about the history of suffrage rights. Comparing not being allowed to vote at all, to being against mandating a ban on activities is not even remotely close to the same thing. But, had I been voting for Arkansas State, I would have voted yes, even though I was against it and thought it was completely unnecessary. This is because repercussions of bad publicity for voting against it would likely be worse than losing a day of practice every two years. It would not surprise me if some of the “unanimous” votes felt the same way. Out of curiosity, I just looked up the games during the week of the election. Lo and behold, barring a date change, we play Louisiana that Thursday. So, we get to play the top team in our division, just 5 days after our previous game, while Louisiana gets 13 days. And now, we get one less day to prepare. I will remind everyone again, I am not against prohibiting people from voting, nor making it harder to vote. I am for allowing any players to be absent or late from team activities, so that they can vote.

Just an FYI, we already disallow people to vote based on multiple factors. If you’re under 18 you can’t vote. If you’re a convicted felon, you can’t vote.

So we already draw the line in the sand and say certain people can’t vote. Some of us just argue about where that line in the sand is drawn.

And no one in this thread has argued that net worth should determine whether or not you can vote.

If you’re a billionaire not paying a penny in tax, you should have zero say in our elections.

By the same measure, if you’re a perpetual leach paying nothing into the system, you should have no say either.

I’m not a member of that party. I despise what Donald stands for. Just letting you know so you can get your generalities right.

LOL!!!!

What? The voting process in the USA is not great at all ... hanging chads mean anything to you? An extremely outdated Electoral College.

Exactly. Anyone who has an issue with the electoral college is just here to grind an axe.

Nope, not a Bernie Bro. I do have a thing against people who receive more votes not winning though.

Yeah, those who take issue with it, just don’t like it because it doesn’t always benefit them. Saying it is outdated holds as much merit as saying the Latin alphabet is outdated. We live in a constitutional republic. Not a direct democracy. It works how it is supposed to. Complaining about winning the popular vote, but not the electoral vote is like a football team complaining they should have won when they scored 5 field goals and their opponent only scored 3 TD’s. “But we scored more times than they did.” They can’t comprehend that campaign strategies would be different or voting patterns be different if the rules were different. If it was popular vote only, republicans wouldn’t completely ignore the west coast.
