RE: Network layoffs
Does ESPN still pay the Big 12 schools that are signed up to it's ESPN plus deal? They do right? Same for the LHN and Fox paying for the sooner network (which i know the PPV game is a big deal).

Some insight into the impact of Covid on sports networks can be found in the recent Disney quarterly report. For the quarter, revenues for Disney's cable division were down around 10%, from $4.464 billion to $4.034 billion from the same quarter last year. However, its operating income was up around 50%, from $1.637 billion to $2.459 billion. Essentially, affiliate fee revenues remained constant, while rights fee payments and advertising revenues went down.

I'm guessing that the B12 members' rush to find OOC opponents for games to be played on 9/12 was driven by the fact that all of those games are member retained rights games. They didn't want to lose out on those contracts.

Yeah I agree with that.. No way ou was canceling it's PPV game. I'm guessing the UTEP game for UT will be on the LHN network as well

Thanks, but I blanch any time I see a WAPO link. They are always behind the Mother of All Paywalls, LOL.

All I can say is that I don't subscribe to the Washington Post and didn't encounter a paywall when I accessed the article.

I saw that on another site.

It's not surprising that the major OTA networks don't care about college sports on TV, as they won't reflect the same political messages that they (the networks) seem to support.

I'm not sure we read the same article as the one I read was based on the network economics, not the "political messages" that you appear to believe were somehow a conclusion. If anything, it appears to me that any "political messaging" is coming from the professional leagues, not the college leagues! But, I guess can anyone can read "political" into anything, if that is their agenda.

RE: Network layoffs
I can see CBS, NBC, and Fox being fine without college football. They didn’t stock up on the stuff and got out when conferences started demanding more money to carry all their stuff. It drove me up a wall why NBC didn’t bite on some of these deals. That Comcast wouldn’t have pushed harder for it. But, they’re right to pass on this. And they look much wiser now when such a bloc of content now goes missing.

Honestly, it would be interesting if a network went a bit tough on the conference and claimed breach for not having content. It’s on us as consumers to complain, but I think there’s more to this one than that solution. Networks are stuck in the middle of this one, and they can’t provide, but are still expected to get money just because? I don’t know about that one...

IIRC they give you a couple free a month and then the Wall goes up. Maybe you hadn't hit that limit.

That's certainly possible since I don't usually read that site. Usually on those sites however you get a "warning" message about your limited number of articles and a pitch to subscribe to that site...none of which I received. Anyway, if you can access the article, fine. If not, sorry.

The final network assignments are a bit confusing here. OU and UT, as well as TTU, have kept their member retained games, while 5 games will be covered by Fox networks. Must have been some interesting horse trading between Fox and ESPN.
