Again, IMO, fierce rivalrys and in state competition made his era much more fun than todays. As much as everyone griped about the big brown turd in Richmond, who wouldn't take it back in a heart beat compared to what we have now?
You may be right. Even 7 years is too long, with an out dated coach. At this rate Wood will have him here, until he wants to retire. Maybe another 10 years. I am still shaking my head, how a coach that coached 18 years in the Patriot league and his last season was a blow out losing season would be Wood's choice. If he was that good, he would not have been at American U. for 18 years. Note Wood UVA connection!

Maybe he liked all the success he had at UVA?
I thought that was a different game?

The game is certainly played different than when he coached at UVA or American.

What's mainly different is that UVA is having more success recently. Same could be said for ODU not so long ago.

Yes, I like faster-paced than he prefers, and I always hold out hope that he'll adjust his style to the talent he has.

I hate the league, but think it is tougher than many give it credit for, especially at the top. I admit I miss the CAA days, but Jones had nothing to do with us leaving for CUSA.

Good days ahead.

No worries. I’m guessing we both hit submit at the same time.

It seems to me many people like to bring up BT's baggage but seem to forget JJ's baggage from his time at UVA.

They've both had their issues.

I'd still take sober BT over JJ anyday.

It's not even close for me. Not only how competitive they were with much more challenging schedules, but Blaine's teams were more enjoyable from a spectator standpoint. I cancelled my season tickets years ago because Jeff Jones' teams are painful to watch. His teams seem lost on the offensive side of the floor, despite having recruited better shooters.

BT had a good run here. I will always appreciate what he did. But, 10 years ago, ODU fans complained endlessly about his coaching, including many on here.

That is my recollection as well. BTs coaching issues were almost identical to JJs. The CAA was definitely way more fun back then. I don't remember too much complaining about BT though except for his last 2 seasons. His recruiting tanked once he fell off the wagon, and of course the final drunk year was a total disaster. But otherwise, I remember people loving BT and his fun loving, blue-collar, hard working, silly joke telling ways. The only complaint I recall was it was slow, ugly, terrible shooting basketball. But man, we sure did win that way. And against some pretty good teams too. Most of his time here was fantastic. 3 NCAAs and one with a win, an NIT F4, a Paradise Jam championship and a CIT national championship. Thats good stuff.

Some of the more "popular" posters on here were on that previous board and it was relentless on how they based BT and his style of play.

I was one of those, but it was more about seeing what was happening. It was clear that things were headed south well before the bottom fell out. Recruiting was bad for a couple/few years before the wheels came off, and I definitely was ready to fire him a couple years before he fired himself. I think my position is consistent. I firmly believe that when a program stops moving forward, you should be proactive in making a change. I think that is how you continue to elevate. You have to parlay the success built by one coach into a better hiring pool and, in theory, a better coach. If you wait until a coach has a continued trend downward, you are starting the process over every time you hire a coach, and you are not getting access to the pool of the best available coaches.

Success at UVA? lol

146–104 (.584 OOC) and 59–67 (.468 CONF) over 8 years...

Aside from a sweet sixteen and elite 8 not so stellar for UVA within the ACC.

Beat me to it. JJ would be considered anything but a success at UVA. His tenure started a downward spiral that had that program fighting to get back to where it should have been for 20 years... but he took the to the Elite 8!

I agree with this. It was pretty evident BT was tanking before he hit rock bottom. You could see it in his recruiting and the increased word on the street about his habit. It just took a few years for it to cycle through. You could see the same thing with BW the last few seasons in regards to recruiting. If you make a quick change, you don't have to hit rock bottom and then the long rebuild process. Thats one thing that I think is in JJs favor. He never seems to do great, but he does seem to be slowly improving recruiting over the last couple seasons. We're getting better, but our problem is our competition is also improving, and at a better rate. That could be said for football too.
