Junior Aggies
A little history on our beloved new WAC brethren:

In 1924, Wisdom made one of his many marks on Tarleton Athletics by bringing change to the school's mascot. According to Tarleton history, Wisdom became disenchanted with the name 'Junior Aggies' and held a school-wide contest to select a new mascot.

Junior Aggies!!! How appropriate. We have the real Aggies and the junior Aggies. Roll Great State of Texans!!! Ha!

Talk about a throwback. Glad to know you're looking into us. Since you're apparently stuck in the'20s, the 30s aren't going to good for anyone and watch for Hitler. Oh and Japan is going to attack Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Why did NMSU have two separate names for mens and women's athletics? Aggies/Roadrunners so weird. Pistol Pete to Lasso Larry back to Pistol Pete is also odd.

I'm just having some fun with you guys. There was a post in the Tarleton side of this board and I was looking through the PDF when I came upon this little gem. I like that the Tarleton posters have been active. We have very little activity from most schools except for NMSU and GCU. Heck, we have more Chicago State posters than Seattle, CBU and many of the other schools.

I have always thought it was so weird that we had different names. It was like that when I went to NMSU. Not sure the history behind that.

Pistol Pete is easy. Back when the NCAA was forcing poor little schools to change their mascots and remove offensive imagery (all the while allowing the P5's and the Florida States of the world to use whatever mascots and logos they wished), NMSU had to remove the pistols. That only lasted a couple years, thank goodness.

RE: Junior Aggies
Originally NMSU adopted a similar looking "Pistol Pete" cowboy mascot to that of Oklahoma State. But over time Oklahoma State copyrighted the Pistol Pete image; as they created it many years ago. NMSU just put its own spin on it. Overtime, in order to not get sued, NMSU was forced to develop its own "Pistol Pete" imagery. NMSU developed Lasso Larry because the NCAA had essentially taken the guns out of Pistol Pete's hands. For many year, NMSU's Pistol Pete use to fire his guns in the air to rile up the fans. But the NCAA basically said Pete had to holster his guns. So NMSU looked into creating Lasso Larry; who was a complete separation from Oklahoma State's Pistol Pete. However, Lasso Larry did not go over well with the Aggie fans and student body. There was a ground swell to bring back Pistol Pete. So, the lasso was removed from the mascot and the guns were added back. Today, Pete still can't shoot his guns but at least now, he can pull them from his holster add raise then in the air.

NMSU was not the only school to use the Pistol Pete mascot. Wyoming had their own version of Pete for a time...

RE: Junior Aggies
From Aggie Alert:

I'm not sure when NMSU's women's sport moved from being club sports to becoming part of intercollegiate athletics.

The first women's basketball coach was Karen Fey (later the Senior Women's Administrator) and I believe she was responsible for the Roadrunner name. All women's sports were called the Roadrunners---golf, softball, basketball, volleyball. I'm not sure why they weren't called Aggies, although I think Karen wanted the separation. From a marketing point of view it became awkward having two mascot names and in the 90s the office of media relations and the marketing department began using a NM State logo developed by Jim Hess of football as the universal mark for NM State athletics.

Soon after that the Roadrunner name was dropped and wisely, all sports came under the Aggie name.

After the Junior Aggies, our name became the Plowboys and now we have a spirit group called by the same monicker. After the Plowboys, we became the Texans and our women’s teams were called the Texanns. Beginning in the fall of 2019, all teams are called the Texans.

RE: Junior Aggies
In 1949, when Grand Canyon College opened in Prescott, Ariz., students chose the Antelope as the official mascot in a schoolwide vote before the first basketball season. Some students wanted an animal mascot that represented the namesake of the university while others wanted it to symbolize Prescott. The finalists were Antelopes and the offbeat “Beasts of Burden,” venerating the donkeys that transported visitors on the steep, rocky trails of the Grand Canyon.
Thunder’s arrival as a mascot was more recent. An antelope has been GCU's mascot since 1981, replacing the first mascot -- a furry, purple blob known as the “Purple People Eater.” But the antelope is believed to have been officially named Thunder in 2008. He previously went by “Andy the Antelope” and “Johnny Lope" for short periods of time. Today’s Thunder boasts a muscular build, wears a No. 49 jersey (for Grand Canyon's founding year) and is known for his fan-friendly ways, wild antics and dunking off trampolines at basketball games. He nearly has attained rock-star status, being introduced at games as "America's Favorite Mascot" with adoration among all ages who seek to get photos with him.

Seattle U

At Seattle U., the Chieftain name and logo date back to 1938, when it was credited to Ed Donohoe, who covered sports for the university's student newspaper, The Spectator. Donohoe was fed up with the old team name, "The Maroons," a name that opponents would debase to "Morons" or "The Marooned," so he began calling the team "Chieftains" in his stories, according to Walt Crowley's "Seattle University: A Century of Jesuit Education."

In 1938, the mascot switched from the Maroons to the Chieftains. The name was selected to honor the college's namesake, Chief Seattle. In 2000, the university changed its mascot to the Redhawks.

To be fair, most people percieve Tarleton as A&M junior and most Tarleton students are Aggie fans.

Tarleton is a founding member of the A&M System, major contributor of Ag research, PUF institution. The Aggie roots run deep.

PETA would object to any animal, somebody would object to any depiction of a person/group of people/occupation. Perhaps something plant based may still be considered non offensive?

Following your logic, perhaps geographic or geological features would be good. That way, NMSU could be the Big Organs.

. . . .

Oops, someone probably would take that the wrong way.
