Democratic Party's 'big tent' won't survive past the November election
Quote:Democrats wanted to use their convention to showcase that they are a big-tent party. The facade falls through when you look at how they’ve treated those who run afoul of the party orthodoxy.

Former Republican John Kasich, who now spends his time pretending he didn’t sabotage Ted Cruz to the benefit of Donald Trump in the 2016 GOP primary, got his welcoming message to the Democratic Party from socialist starlet Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. “Let’s be extremely clear about something: An anti-choice, anti-worker Republican does not get to decide who represents the Democratic Party,” Ocasio-Cortez said in an email to supporters.

The issue of abortion is the biggest elephant in the room. Democrats forced out the last meaningfully pro-life member of their congressional caucus, Dan Lipinski, with Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren endorsing his Democratic challenger in their Illinois primary. “I think being pro-choice is an absolutely essential part of being a Democrat,” Sanders said during his presidential run.

But it’s not just abortion that is a strict barometer for the Democratic Party. Democrats aren’t interested in you if you’re pro-Second Amendment; their presidential nominee has promised to put gun-grabber Beto O’Rourke in charge of his gun policy. Pro-Israel? You’re increasingly unwanted in the party, which is moving quickly to the Ocasio-Cortez wing on the Middle East, as soon-to-be-former Rep. Eliot Engel found out.

Maybe you think Trump is a unique threat to the institutions of our government. Democrats will welcome you by threatening to pack the Supreme Court, calling for the abolition of the legislative filibuster in the Senate, and calling for the abolition of the Electoral College.

The party has moved further left on other issues. On healthcare, "Medicare for all" is right around the corner. Same with the Green New Deal on climate policy. Biden’s relative moderation is simply putting a pause on the party’s transition to a more liberal, dogmatic party. Biden is not the future of the party; that would be those like Ocasio-Cortez, in the footsteps of Sanders, or Julian Castro, following the lead of Warren.

Maybe there is a big tent for this election cycle, but if Biden wins, that tent will start shrinking immediately. After all, Biden’s own selection to lead the party in the future is Kamala Harris, who hits all of the marks mentioned above (save Israel). The Biden “big tent” is held together only by its opposition to Trump. Once he’s gone, there’s no reason for Democrats to work with their junior coalition partners anymore.
