I don't even know the his name. He is MIA. I didn't like Benson in the WAC but he was better in the SBC.

Where do you wish to see him?

He is the Commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference. He isn't Elon Musk. Nobody is looking for him.

It's not about looking for him...

It's about Gill putting himself out there, being a figurehead, showing leadership. Most football fans have heard of the AAC's commissioner, Mike Aresco, because he has done countless TV interviews/newspaper interviews/podcasts, and he's put himself in the public eye to forward his conference's brand. One example being the "P6" branding effort

Benson did a great job of making himself publicly available. He did a lot of interviews. He took the Sun Belt up a few notches with this public leadership.

A worry of mine is that Gill was basically forced into resignation during his time as AD the the University of Richmond, with one reason being his questionable leadership, on top of a few other things that didn't settle well with Richmond's biggest supporters.

I know for a fact of one example, where a Troy sports writer had requested a telephone interview with Gill last year about general SBC topics, even offering flexibility in the date to have said interview. The sports writer received a response back, expressing Gill had no interest of doing an interview.

Gill isn't showing good leadership after a year on the job. It's really that simple.

Wasn't he in LSG?

Here's a different question: What are example of things he's done for the SBC to improve it?

So I can't keep up. Benson before was worthless, just played golf , didn't do enough to promote the SBC. Now. New guy has all of those failings and more and now Benson was great.

Ok I am up to date.

For the record, I liked Benson and thought he did a pretty good job as SBC commish. I believe many others here feel the same. Obviously some thought differently, especially StAte fans... but I'd be curious to know of their comparison now between Benson/Gill.

Neither did squat for stAte. Situation normal. At least this one hasn't Fedx'd a conference championship trophy to an empty office on a weekend.

He was the assistant commissioner for the A10...

His primary qualification was being the AD for Richmond. At Richmond, he was so bad, fans dropped their support and donations and the administration forced him out while allowing him to "retire". The assistant commish of th A10 was a 'find a place for him' spot until the Peter principle can work. He should not be our commish and does not have the capacity to grow the conference in any way. Why should we be the conference to hire the bottom of the rung pass off's for our commish? We can't afford this experiment for years when the potential is so great for the SBC?

This State fan wants Benson back. We could not have picked someone worst for the SBC. The real damage will take years to surface when our potential is now so great.

Benson has increased the number of bowls affiliated with the Sunbelt from 2 to 5. Benson will at least do media interviews. Kept the conference on ESPN/ESPN+ instead of where CUSA you aren't sure where the game will be. He kept the conference together after several raids from CUSA, I think we came out ahead if you look at who left vs who came in.

I hope Gill winds up making me look like a fool... but at the current rate...

I can only wonder how the presidents feel about his leadership thus far? They're obviously not going to say anything about him publicly.

Benson did a fantastic job. For anyone to think he was a sorry commish makes absolutely zero sense.

I get why you don't understand this. Being ULM and all. If you ever win a trophy in football and get stiffed by your league commissioner then we will talk. That wasn't the only thing with him.

I don't like that he didn't stand up and advocate for us when we for filing our bowl appeal (because we had a good case and the rule is senseless anyways), but I'd still take Benson back if we could.

Gill not at least publicly taking up for App when Mike Aresco was complaining about App being ranked over SMU is inexcusable, as well as at least not saying anything about the situation where New Orleans didn't let App out of a Power 5 when there was the best UL Ragin Cajun team in forrver available (even if he can't do anything about it).

Benson was never great at that stuff, but Gill is even worse.

Benson may not have been an outstanding Commissioner, but he was not terrible and certainly adequate. At lease Benson didn't live in a cave and come out to see the light now and then. Most fans of the Sun Belt probably don't even know who the current Sun Belt Commissioner is, or if the Conference even has a Commissioner? He is a pitiful example of what leadership should look like!

As much as I hated Benson, I won't disagree. Gill is non-existent.

I still don't know how we wound up with Gill, shouldn't we be able to get a commish from an existing conference. Is the Atlantic 10 better than SBC? Just asking. If we would have gotten an assistant commish from a power 5, now that would be a different conversation. We have to have a commish that will promote and can name all the schools in the conference.

Someone give former Big 12 commish Dan Beebe a call. From what I recall, he did a lot of great things for the Big 12 until Texas started getting greedy and forming their Longhorn Network.
