Americans do want it, but eternal vigilance is the price of everything. Politicians that advantage of the fact that most people rank effective government way down on their priority list.
Oh, I agree that we want it, we just don’t demand it. There are a lot of things that I think the majority of Americans could agree with in regards to fixing big problems, but politicians know that doing absolutely nothing keeps those problems going, thus securing votes.
We may have one of the most negative strategies towards governance that there is!
No, I think our expectation is that the private sector would solve many issues and the government would only be used in the most extreme cases.

I think that’s the neoliberal hypothesis and that hypothesis has created a few generations of horrible politicians, who have been terrified of actually governing. Now we sit behind in a lot of stuff.
