RE: Looking at Arkansas State
Had their first scrimmage last week and both Hatcher and Bonner played very well as did redshirt freshman Coltin Clack (6-3, 230). Offense was expected to be very good and one of the very best in G5 and if anything it is better than advertised. Very explosive.

Their skill players are simply outstanding by any standard, especially their receiving corps, which despite losing a consensus all-american along with one of the better athletes in the country, is even better than last year.

The biggest takeout has been that for the first time in years they have the OL to take full advantage of their skill players. They return their 2-deep on the OL and they are outstanding.

They really have no weakness on that side of the ball.

Defense is probably a little better than expected, but has a ways to go. Don't expect them to be ready for game one.

Their DL--which has a wealth of experience, is the strength on that side of the ball, and should be one of the best you face. The other positions are are still a work in progress, but they have a lot of talent, maybe as good as they have ever had, to cobble a 2-deep out of, but it will probably take some time to jell.

Like I have said here several times, not sure how prepared to play they will be in game one, but you are going to be impressed with their talent. Very impressed in fact.

That game was certainly impacted by the loss of Wendy Anderson, and Blake having to miss the game.

Under anything resembling normal conditions they would have won that game by double digits.

Then the injuries started, making 2019 anything but normal, and now 2020 looks to take abnormal to a whole new level.

RE: Looking at Arkansas State
Not that he is going to be their starter but what stood out in the scrimmage was that the level of play from the QB position was at a very high level when either of their top two were on the field.

https://www.pff.com/news/college-footbal...s-starters

10. LAYNE HATCHER, ARK STATE
Hatcher is currently locked in a quarterback competition with Logan Bonner, but this should be Hatcher's job to lose. Hatcher, who spent a year with Nick Saban and Alabama before transferring to Ark State, produced a 90.0 passing grade — sixth in the FBS — in his first game action at the college level when he took over from Bonner. Ark State produced just 0.06 EPA per pass play with Bonner under center, but that jumped to 0.151 with Hatcher at the helm — the best the Red Wolves have ever had with a single quarterback for a season in the PFF College era.

and you can look at Hatcher(#3) in the scrimmage in the 4th video on this report by KAIT and see is very accurate with his passes, and can run if necessary.

A recently deceased friend of mine was on the coaching staff at Pulaski.

I'll have to figure out if he was still coaching when this QB was there.

Again thanks for the credit but the Boise idea was not mine, or their current AD's..

For the past 13 months Arkansas State fans have heard the phrase “next Boise” or “Boise of the South” repeatedly.

https://www.sportinglifearkansas.com/wha...-boise-st/

Their current AD's goal is to be the G5 representative "sooner" rather than "later"--if you want to give me credit for that I'll take it also, and I think they plan on beating your team on September 5th. Tough task on the road but they are more than talented enough to do it, and more importantly their players and coaches know it. All I can promise you is that you are going to be very impressed with their talent. Really impressed in fact.

Bonner was never the back up. He was injured. Hatcher filled in with a very good year. Bonner will probably be the starter. More talented of the two. If he falters it is nice to have a guy like Hatcher.

Sorry, I really never paid that much attention to him. I thought...since we actually had a game coming up with them ...that they were worth checking out. I really vaguely remember those who post from other schools. In fact, I am not even sure what I had for dinner 4 days ago.

So are you suggesting that the LBMS will need a new scoreboard come week two of the season?

I'm probably in the minority but I wouldn't mind seeing Ark State on the schedule every year. Easy drive for fans, long history together, and it sure beats having to play on the road to schools like Louisiana Monroe and South Alabama.

Obviously a few paid attention, and again it is not that i keep up with Memphis as well as i should, just that I am doing my homework for another site on the Other Arkansas Colleges and Universities.

My prediction for the game initially was whoever got the ball last would probably win the game, but planned on reevaluating closer to game day.

After their scrimmage last week I have predicted on their largest site that they would have the best offense on the field in all their games now that they have K-State. They still think it is all but their game with you but I am pretty sure not in game one, and maybe not at all this year. Their HC by the way agrees with me.

The key to the game was always how bad their defense would be in game one, and again after their scrimmage I can say with some confidence, that because they were able to add some very solid CB's--really their only position of concern, they might be pretty good in game one, and that is a game changer. Their DC agrees with me on this, and all their HC said was they have longer, quicker, stronger, and probably faster players at the position than in the past.

Another big advantage for them is that you will not have a home field advantage in this game.

I wish I knew some Ark St fans. Sounds like a good year to get them to accept a bet. I wouldn't mind fishing in that pond.

Not really, most think you are the better team.

It is understandable why they feel that way, but again the death of their head coaches wife right before the season, all the injuries, especially to key players, and changing defenses mid-season has obscured the fact that they would have probably won at least 10 regular season games last year, and return almost all their key players.

While they lost a couple of outstanding players as GTs-- William Bradley-King (Baylor) and Jerry Jacobs (Arkansas), and their starting MLB Tajhea Chambers is not coming back after his third major knee injury, they are even more athletic than last year on defense. That was the biggest takeout from their scrimmage.

I'm still at maybe on you even having the better team this year, but they are still talented enough, experienced enough to beat you, even if you do.

Agree. And they usually have a good team.

My prediction is this will become one of the more anticipated G5 games each year.

Of course Memphis is established as a force in G5, but with the completion of their football complex they now have all the pieces in place to join the party, and they are the most talented SBC team.

As far as the CB's this is what their HC said, "They are strong. They are more athletic than we were; longer than we were. I think we have a little bit more speed.".

Wanted to make sure I got exactly what their HC said about their corners, and not paraphrase because that position is the key, not only to the Memphis game, but their season, and what he said their scrimmage confirmed.

A couple of freshmen from your area, that some of you might know, have impressed in fall camp.

CORBET MIMS: https://astateredwolves.com/sports/footb...-mims/4675

LINCOLN PARE: https://astateredwolves.com/sports/footb...-pare/4676

Mims could end-up in the rotation at DE, and Pare--their lowest rated recruit out of HS, has probably been the biggest surprise of their fall camp.
