Police say Cannon Hinnant didn't die from a stray bullet or a neglected firearm -- they say a neighbor walked up to the child while he was playing outside with his siblings and shot him point-blank in the head.

Cannon’s mother Bonny Waddell is speaking out about his death.

“My baby didn’t deserve this,” Waddell said. “We lost a big piece of our family.”

Waddell said she wants to see the death penalty given to the man accused of killing Cannon, 25-year-old Darius Sessoms.

Austin Hinnant, Cannon’s father, said he also agrees with seeking the death penalty.

Sessoms was a neighbor of Austin Hinnant for eight years. The two men even had dinner and drinks together the night before Cannon's murder.

"There wasn't anything between me and him, any bad blood whatsoever, for him to have a reason to do this," Hinnant said.

Police have not released information on a motive.

Sessoms was caught and arrested within 24 hours of the murder. He was charged with first-degree murder and denied bond.

This is every parents worst nightmare x 1000. While it's bad enough to lose a child under any circumstances for a parent to have to live with the absolute horror of the manner in which that child was killed it must be a never ending nightmare.

The primary argument I've heard against the death penalty is that an innocent person, wrongly convicted, could be put to death.

Well, this doesn't appear to be a possibility in this case.



BTW, I'm in favor of capital punishment. And with advances in DNA technology we now have increased confidence that the convicted person is actual the guilty person.

Darius Sessoms should 100% be put to death. I'd be for all for a less than humane method, if we're being honest. He is the definition of human scum that shouldn't be allowed to take another breath.

I'm guessing there's no major media attention because:

Hard to create a sensationalized story when everything seems to be appropriately being handled.

If this had been a white man executing a black child...with all of the other facts the same....then the media would be going ape**** crazy over it.

Justice for Cannon! 5-year-old-boys lives matter! 5YOBLM!

But, more to the point, this is an indescribably horrible thing for any family to endure, and my heart goes out to that family and the soul of innocent little boy, Cannon. Also, all the thousands of children lost to violence in Dem-run cities like Chicago, where the LeftDem "leaders" don't care a lick about people's lives and ignore the problems their "progressive" ideology and mismanagement have created and made worse.

It was my child the only person looking at a potential death penalty would be me. The other guy wouldn’t even have to worry about a trial.

In situations where there is 0 doubt, I have no moral qualms whatsoever with the death penalty. Burn him at the stake for all I care.

Federal Hate crime charges should be brought to expedite the death penalty.
