I understand what you are saying but from the looks of the talent on the field Hopson didn't have a good relationship with them. I would bet Freeze could out recruit hop just a hunch.

Well, a 3-legged jacka** has a fair shot at out-recruiting Hopson as far as that goes, but I’m pretty sure hiring one wouldn’t be a good move.

A guy that almost won the SEC and won the Sugar Bowl at Ole Miss isn't the answer?

If a high school coach doesn’t like you, they won’t send kids your way. I’m not sure Freeze has high school coaches on his side around this region.

Not to mention, 4-0 at Liberty...make that 5-0 when they play us. He's a great coach, even at his price tag.

Maybe? Would he accept $1.2M plus $1M in incentives based on performance to come home?

his buyout at liberty is the problem. He's due $2 million a year for three more years. I'm not sure what the buyout portion of that is but USM can't afford it.

If we can't get freezer I just hope we can get somebody that can recruit. We are already struggling and with kiffin, leach and sanders it's an uphill battle. Love Walden but he's just not ready. We have to take some chances and go for broke next hire. Freeze is top of my list because of his ties to Hattiesburg. That may be the only way we might get him.

Freeze is going to have a good shot at getting a P5 job next year. I could see South Carolina and Vanderbilt both going after him.

You are probably right. Briles, Fadora and monkin off the table I guess. Who else should we look at. No Matt luke, nix or any no name coach. I always liked Bill Clark but he isn't taking a step backwards.

Fedora might still be an option. They should give Rich Rodriguez an interview.

Ole Miss was just bad and he was only there for 1 year.

RE: Our Next Head Coach
Well, regardless of what the particular numbers are, this is where we--administration and boosters alike--decide if we want to be somewhat serious about football or just bompy-domp along happy to field a team.
I'm hearing McClain has been kicking butt raising money since he arrived. Dare I say we may finally have an A.D. who knows the difference between selling and begging. Can he hit 7 figures for an impact hire, who knows, but I fully expect we'll be able to pay more than we did Johnson & Monken, which was $700k/year (Hopson's $500k/year was more a function of how cheap he was willing to work than what we could pay if we actually tried).
Also, an interesting read here:
https://andywittry.substack.com/p/what-l...ing-change
There's some Hopson talk in there, but nothing we haven't already heard. The part about Freeze is intriguing for a few reasons. Other known current applicants via a VOIA email request are Kansas State assistant Van Malone and UAB DC David Reeves. Neither of those does much for me given our experience with handing the keys to defensive coaches.

Quote:If we’ve learned anything from the head coaching hires in Mississippi in the last 12 months, from Ole Miss hiring Lane Kiffin, to Mississippi State hiring Mike Leach, to Jackson State hiring Deion Sanders, whatever Southern Miss does next is bound to be interesting.
Thanks for the link even though not much in the article gave me anything to get excited about. And to the statement above, my response would be - and if we've learned anything from many decades of Southern Miss administration/leadership, whatever Southern Miss does will be a dud.
I will hold on to hope, if only, and maybe...
