Yes, this athletic expansion is a last-ditch Hail Mary pass to rescue the school. It's 4th and 25 for this institution.

They've also started building dorms on campus, it was basically previously entirely commuters. Might help a little

It's politically volatile to even suggest closing an HBCU, especially a state one. Mississippi Valley State is now under 2,000 students with an endowment of less than $2 million. Any talk of merging with Jackson State (100 miles away) is immediately called down.

Right, but Bluefield State has an 85% white student body, only about 9% black. So it's not going to rally the same constituency as true HBCUs like Jackson and Mississippi Valley would and are.

So I'd put their chances of ending up in the Appalachian Athletic Conference along with Bluefield College at about 80%. The River States and Mid South are possible, but not nearly as likely

I would expect Salem University to join them there within the year.
