What happens if fans don't come back?
What if fans decide that watching on TV is a good alternative to paying thousands for tickets, parking fees, $27 sodas, stadium food, traffic, etc. Maintaining stadiums isn't cheap. TV money isn't going to offset the revenue from fans in the stadium.

I think it also gives an advantage to schools like Gonzaga and Boise that have good TVQ but not large, established fan bases.

Ask Bubba Cunningham and Kevin White - they will know.

If there are unionized players receiving cash for play then I’m out.

Networks gain total control, fans lose interest, and reality sets it for all of those who forgot that the fans made their wealth and fame possible, not just themselves.

Ultimately I think there is going to be more and more of a strain on the P5 financially, really accelerated by this season. Players unionizing will be the final straw. What a lot of people don’t realize is that the argument of paying players vs not paying players isn’t the argument. There isn’t a program in the country that can afford to split revenue or pay players, they just can’t because it would be illegal to pay football players and not women’s golf members or tennis or baseball or swimming. We are talking a price tag likely in the hundreds of millions for an athletic department. It’s just not feasible. What I think will happen is they will push more and more for this, programs will cut as many other sports as possible before eventually cutting football and ultimately all of college sports will come to an end. The NFL will start a minor league which may pay $50,000 for a contract for an average player. Kids will be thrilled until they don’t make the big league and get cut after a couple years, at which point they will have no further income, no college degree, and no job prospects.

I can deal with high ticket prices, parking fees, $27 sodas, stadium food, and traffic, as much of a pain the ass those things are.

The one thing I can’t deal with? Mandating digital tickets.

Not even offering paper tickets as an option at extra cost is such a slap in the face to those of us who keep tickets as mementos. Such arrogance by athletic departments.

That will be the one thing that causes me to boycott attending games.

There's a pretty far drop to go from 100,000+ attendance at Penn State and Michigan to 0. No doubt college football attendance is dropping but chances are nobody at this board is going to see the day where fans "don't come back" at the top programs. Maybe a school like Illinois will have MAC like attendance in the next 20 years (but only if they still suck, they contend for the Rose Bowl a year or two and the fans will come back). It's not like HDTV's just came out this year.

No doubt the Corona Virus is going to negatively affect fan attendance at live sporting events in the future. It's possible it might permanently damage some FCS or even low end FBS schools. But Ohio State? They may have to settle for 90,000 fans a game in the 2030's instead of 100,000 fans a game.

The young men and young ladies putting their bodies on the line representing our universities deserve to be paid. Coaches and universities are making too much money not to share it with the young people that make it possible.

That might not be popular, and it won’t be easy, but it needs to happen.

As far as fans coming back, I don’t believe they will stay away. What college football needs to worry about is changing demographics in the country making college football less popular in the next decade or two.

Good chance many dont...even more wont if the players keep pushing the "pay us" narrative. Thats going to result increased costs, higher ticket prices, and higher cost to attend a game. Given 10% unemployment and many---who did not lose their jobs--but saw fewer hours or lower commissions. Those folks, as well as those turned off by the player demands to "pay us"---will perhaps not be all that interested in renewing their season tickets at the old prices, much less the hiked up new price that will be required to pay the players. Furthermore, some conferences may not be back until fall 2021--meaning people will have found other ways to fill their time that they prefer over their old college past time---that has morphed into some sort of bastardized "NFL Mini-Me" league. A lot of people may just opt out---and keep doing what they are doing now (fishing, hunting, golf, etc) and just a catch a game on TV if they get the itch.

They are paid---just not in cash. Its basically a barter system. As far as staying away---crank the prices up enough and they will stay away. Add to that shutting down for almost 2 years and a lot of those loyal fans will find something else to do. When football returns, they wont look at it as "staying away", they will be doing the same thing they have been doing for 24 months.

What a lot of arrogant sports stake holders dont seem to understand is that the consumer can find other things to do. They already have. Despite being the only live sports available, the NBA and MLB TV ratings have been horrible. People have found other stuff to do. I was an Houston Oiler season ticket holder. When they left---I stopped watching the NFL. I just didnt care when I didnt have a dog in the fight. I didnt watch more that a couple of games a year until the Texans franchise started. I was a Texans original season ticket holder as well. I dropped the season tickets after 8 years. Why? Two reasons. One, I just never had the same feelings about the Texans that I had with the Oilers. I like em. Im a fan. But the gut connection just wasnt there for me. The second reason was I missed the things I had been doing when Oilers were gone. You dissappear for 2 years, start paying players, having contract issues, player strikes---its not hard to see how people might just not feel the same about college ball and go back to the things they are doing today.
