I know some people want us to increase our academic profile and I can't necessarily disagree, but at least to me, ODU's bread and butter has always been to serve those who may not have necessarily been the "best" in high school, transient populations, and those from lower-income/immigrant/first-generation college households.
The numbers (for years) prove ODU is serving the public as intended: increasing the quality of life for its students through education. It wouldn't surprise me if ODU has the best ROI per student when it comes to Virginia's investment in public universities.
I agree this is awesome. In many ways this is what higher ed should be about. I just think ODU takes on more than its fair share of this and could diversify its mission and student base some too, which would result in a better academic profile, while maintaining this important impact on society. As far as ROI goes, its interesting. ODU always promotes how cheap it is comparatively, but we don't get placed on the best ROI lists much. Even statewide. GMU and VCU often seem to outrank us on the ROI lists, even though we are cheaper. At some point the perceived quality of the education trumps the price. We have "cheap" and "diverse" nailed, no question about it. Now what we need is "high quality" and "good student experience" to go with it.

Agreed.
This is extremely good news.

Curious. What do you mean diversify it’s student base more?
I’m curious because currently our student population is 53% minorities. Additionally ODU has the highest % of African-Americans of all non-HBCU’s in the state. ODU of today is not the ODU of the 70’s or 80’s.

Not racially, age wise or gender. I mean get more second and third gen college students, more AP type students, more students from the western part of the state, more international students, and maybe even more wealthy students. It’s fantastic that we give so many first gen students, people facing financial hardship, and B- students a chance. Heck I one of them. But it’s a good thing for people like that to intermingle with the other students I mentioned. Not only does it expose one to other perspectives and understanding. It’s important for friendships and networking. I’m convinced most USNWR national schools provide a high level education. The most important thing for a student after that is who they are around to build relationships with. Little John Doe is going to have more opportunities after college if he’s friends with the daughters of CEOs and politicians as well as 1 gen students from lower middle class backgrounds. So that type of diversity is important. Plus first gen students often can’t give back as soon or as much because more money is needed in the household. That effects rankings. Rankings effect who attends. It’s a cycle. Like I said, I’m very proud of ODU being able to make this type of difference. It did in my life too. But let’s not stop expanding the ODU brand and be happy with this as our finish line. Diversity of all types including background, thought, culture and income is as important as any other. Hope that clears it up.

Slouching towards even greater mediocrity. People might pat themselves on the back but I've already seen many of the people I went to school with decline to send their kids to Old Dominion in favor of other VA schools. Community colleges exist for a reason-it shouldn't be the academic goal of a doctoral university. If these trends continue - Old Dominion is in serious jeopardy for long-term growth and prominence. I have had 2 kids attend Old Dominion. I'm not sure if the 3rd will follow. Old Dominion is on the wrong track.

This may be a mistake. If you claim to be a valuable asset, you should price accordingly. Claiming high ROI based in part on low investment may not be a winning strategy

Im afraid I see this all the time too. I've only had two friends send their child to ODU in the last 7 or 8 years. I also fully agree that community colleges exist for a reason, and ODU should not be competing with them for the same students. And people generally assume you get what you pay for. We aren't even playing on an even field with VCU and GMU if we start our bringing in less in tuition. I know we do more with less, but its got to be tough to provide the same resources and experience with less cash.

I think Mr. Strome is probably the most successful person that falls into that category from ODU right? I think he was a D student in Highschool?
I'd love to see ODU continue to improve their management degrees. We have a great Engineering program. However, I'm and ODU Engineering grad and have a few VT and UVA engineers that work for me. I got tapped for my position as a result of my Engineering Management Minor. If ODU can join http://www.mempc.org/ I'm sure it would go a long way with improving the profile of the school.
They should also expand the exec education offerings from the school. There are plug and play options that other schools already use. Richmond for example uses https://www.trilogyed.com/programs/
I was looking at a program from U Chicago and saw its done via 3rd party https://northwest.education/
Another source of plug and play options https://emeritus.org/
These could be real profit centers for ODU. I'm not 100% sure of the cost split, but to not offer these
ODU's offerings are pretty slim IMO

RE: Top 10 Nationally
Was with a gathering of guys I went to school with this past weekend and Old Dominion's reputation came up. As I stated before, not a single person had a child going to Old Dominion. UVA, VT, JMU, Mason, VCU, Longwood, Radford, CNU and other out-of-state schools were all represented. I'm told in NoVA we're not even a consideration - ODU is viewed as nothing like the school we attended. Runte did a fantastic job raising academic standards and as a result watching our student population explode. Then Broderick came in with a laser like focus on everything but academic performance. Lowering standards and making ODU accessible to the unqualified seemed to be the only goal. This next hire for President of Old Dominion will make or break the future of the school. I fear future fundraising for the university and ODAF will dry up quickly.

Ive often considered the impact of this model on fundraising and the future as well. The sad thing is, when I attended ODU it would have easily been the more highly regarded choice over GMU, Longwood, Radford and CNU and every bit equal to VCU. Im very glad the school is making a difference amongst first gen students, but it makes me sad to see its reputation and desirability falling amongst its peers. I never would have thought Id see the day when CNU, Longwood and Radford were considered in the same league, much less a better option. But here we are. Sounds like we need to diversify with more NoVa and western Va kids, more second and third gen students, and more wealthy students. I'd love to know why the admin dislikes Runte so much and think she did so much harm. I know she did some shady stuff with the delegate from the peninsula to get education funding, but that cant be all of it. That stuff happens all the time. They just got caught. FWIW, I do have a friend on the peninsula this year who's child chose ODU over VCU. He's a proud ODU alum. First time in years thats happened though.
