Mountain West cancels/postpones season
McMurphy reporting
https://watchstadium.com/sources-mountai...8-10-2020/
Quote:The Mountain West Conference has canceled its football season this fall because of player health and safety concerns regarding COVID-19, sources told Stadium.

In a vote of league presidents Monday, the Mountain West became the second Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conference to cancel all of its fall sports, sources said.

The Mountain West will consider playing football in the spring, sources said.

With the cancellation of the football season for the 12-member Mountain West, a total of 26 FBS schools have now opted not to play this fall.

This AFA statement says they may try to play their games against Army and Navy even with the MWC football season canceled.

They've said out the gate of this uncertainty that if CFB is cancelled the 2020 National Champion will be the winner of the commander-in-chief's trophy.

Boise State is in Idaho, which is one of the States hit hard at the moment by covid, especially in Boise. I am not even sure they were practicing; they might have been one of the 6 or 7 not practicing.

BYU is back to square one losing 3 MWC opponents. I think NMSU is done as well.

Are you subject to exit fees if the conference cancelled the season?

Feels like the Air Force should be able to join the AAC for 2020 without MW exit fees holding them back.

I wonder if Air Force could play Army and Navy as late as November, and then Army and Navy could keep their usual December date. Air Force could then play a conference schedule in the spring.

Air Force can't play if the Governor says no sporting events. Same with Army and Navy. I don't think Miami Florida will be playing either. It is becoming another NYC hot spot with COVID-19 spread.

Serious question--does the Governor of the state have authority over the military institution and if they play or not? Is the stadiums for the academies on military property? If not, I suppose they would have authority over the venue and not approve the event but that sounds like heavy political games going on there.

No. The ADs do not have the say so that they can keep things going. As it is, Utah is one of the states banned to travel to the northeast states until the virus get to get under the control. The higher brass in the Pentegon also would way in and tell them no. If the state leaders declared a state of emergency of a health crisis? The football fields and all that may need to be kept open for medical emergencies. The Air Force football field could be used for non-emergency medical treatment while keeping the hospital open for the life-threatning issues. The military including the acadamies need to be ready for emergencies. As long as this virus is still spreading? Any movement from one place to another will be disaster. These players can get some practice from the acadamies to help in crisis instead of playing. It is more valuable lessons that helping others in need is more important than playing a sport.

Air Force may be able to schedule home and homes this season with Army and BYU, which have each had their schedules blown up by the MAC and MWC cancellations. That would get them to five games anyway.

Normally, I'd agree----but this year? I'd say virtually anything is potentially on the table this year. From a legal standpoint, BYU alone is the most likely. BYU is an independent with a wholly owned ESPN rights property. Its pretty easy to do if both BYU and the AAC want to do a one year deal. For Army and Air Force---there could be network rights issues as neither is an ESPN property. I would think AF and Army home games go to their respective networks---but if they are members of the AAC for a season--idk.

I think we are quickly running into logistical hurtles to figure out how to integrate these teams in the conference schedules. It’s not that it could not be done but rather that if it was going to be done it would’ve needed to be done a month or two ago. But where there is a will, there is a way.
