Tribe Talk
I don't particularly wish to excavate this sore point, but it is inevitable.
I'm in the process of getting a pro to gradually create bespoke high level graphics/branding for us site wide (see announcement pinned atop all forums right now). My primary goal is to eliminate any fan submitted graphics currently using trademarks. I'm not a graphic artist, I don't even pretend to be one on TV. So invariably my (somebody bad) graphic gets heavily vote defeated by a fan submitted graphic that cribs or heavily leans on the official trademarks ... because that's what fans wanna see. But before I can do some things like send out promotional stuffs to you guys like tailgating table runners / swag / flyers .... all the invalid use of the marks must go.
Which brings me to W&M. I've already processed several username change requests for W&M fans removing Tribe from their username. So let's talk about whether or not you guys are happy with Tribe Talk as the name here.
For the record ... I've got no dog in this hunt. My personal opinion on the matter is context matters. It is nothing short of impossible, for example, to try to portray the use by FSU of Seminoles as anything less that respectful, mutually beneficial, and positive. But I'm familiar with FSU because GT plays them ... well .... they did before the ACC expanded anyway. I plead total ignorance to W&M's use of Tribe and how it is viewed by the alumni, fans, students, etc.
So, sooner or later I'm going to get around to redoing branding here. Do y'all wanna keep the name or do we want to think about a change? Reply on this thread and give me your two cents. There are no wrong answers, but please be respectful even if your argument is passionate. I'm mainly looking to see if there's an existing clear consensus here one way or the other.

I think the name is fine. We are the Tribe and we talk about it here. As far as trademarks, I'm not sure how it would work. The Tribe logo in use is an old logo and one that I believe is no longer in use. Tribe Talk should stay. If the logo needs to go, so be it.

Tribe Talk
It won't surprise most of you but my opinion is I don't really care except that I am against anything griffin-y.

Tribe Talk
The American Indian Student Association at W&M hasn't even hinted to a call to remove Tribe. In fact, they officially pushed back when a student initiated a petition to remove "Tribe."
Our most progressive Athletic Department approved "Tribe" on the 2020-2021 football uniforms.
The NCAA Executive Committee ruled that "...the "Tribe" nickname, by itself, was found to be neither hostile nor abusive, but rather communicates ennobling sentiments of commitment, shared idealism, community and common cause."
My public vote is to keep Tribe Talk.

I thought I recalled seeing W&M wear script "Tribe" helmets in a similar vein in my years of watching ESPN Goal Line. As such that part of the logo would likely be axed. I'm unsure on the feathers but if they too were part an old mark they'd go. That's not to say it wouldn't still be highly Tribe-ish in theme ... just nothing used in actual marks.

I like Tribe Talk, but I'd be lying if I said I really cared in the slightest. I just kinda think of this place s the WM Forums, had I not read this thread I don't think I could've told you this forum was named Tribe Talk.

I am a 100% supporter of W&M keeping "Tribe", but regarding the "forum name" this is my view as well.

I'm one of the ones that received a name change, but as long as W&M is still the Tribe it's hard to argue that the name has to be changed. I'll add my voice to the others above me that also didn't really know what the name of the board was.

I’m happy with the current name.
I’m happy with the current logo.
Just a joyful person I guess.

I'm currently taking a course about the Romans and the Celts.
Every Roman and Celtic community across Europe is referred to as a "tribe."
No single racial or ethnic group can appropriate the word "tribe."
We have just as much right to use it for our W&M family as any other group of
people on the planet.
I want to see W&M Tribe plastered on everything.

If we were changing names and "Tribe" was an option, this is correct. But context matters. We didn't become the Tribe after changing from the Romans or Celtics, and we kept the logo we had when we were the Indians. This argument holds water if there is no history, but not given our specific history.
Again, though, if W&M isn't changing, there's no easily defensible reason this board should change.

The name "Tribe" is, of course, universal and apples to many different groups. A change of name is not under discussion and shouldn't be.

Tribe Talk is fine. There may be a more creative name out there, but I am too lazy to think of one. It's fine by me.

Tribe Talk is fine. No need to change to "Smoke Signals". My two cents worth.
